Another update:

We're now up to £721, which after GFM takes their small cut (it really is small) comes out to more than $1025. This is a staggering amount, and is very very nearly a full two months worth of the rent sorted for them.

For all those who have pondered recently on whether the community here is strong, here's your answer.

I'll donate, but I've enjoyed watching the Lammers struggle for a long time now and don't want them to go. It's like watching a boxing match when one of the fighters (Lammers) has no arms.

As much as I admire what you do, why are you telling people GFM only takes a small cut obscuring numbers with different currencies?
Based on the numbers they take 8.8% or 88$ from every 1000 you collect.

To clear the questioning about the fundraising up, they take 5%. Because Stripe is their card handler for payments, they also take 3%. 8% total. You might want to go look at the alternatives, because this was by far the cheapest way to make this happen.

I was NOT obscuring the cut with different currencies. I find the implication deeply offensive. The reason for the two currencies stated is that I set the account up initially and I'm in the UK, so by the rules of GoFundMe I had to set it up as GBP. Whereas Pentelarc is in USA and stated that what was needed to stave off the immediate worry was $540. So I put the updates in both currencies.

You know, instead of implying that I was twisting things, you could have just asked. I don't know if we are continuously losing something in translation, but you aren't translating well at this end.


Now, if anyone else still has doubts, don't donate. Simple. I for one prefer to see a cut taken, but the person who needs it helped.

The word 'obscuring' implies that he is deliberately hiding the numbers, which in turn implies he has a reason to hide them like stealing funds etc. I can see why he was upset by the remark. The fact you would make the same remark again is more troubling. Why not simply ask for the numbers as Renton suggested?

I'm sorry, I didn't intend to imply that at all. What I meant was that the numbers were obscured by the different currencies. I did not mean to imply any ill intent nor did I think someone would seriously interpret it that way.

Obviously I wouldn't know anything about the subjective reasons for it. That is why I tried to formulate a short concise question why the numbers had to be obscured in this way.

The reason from my side was that I fell for it.
I knew Kickstarter was taking 5% and it seemed to me like he was implying much better terms on this page. And expected something like e-bay style more fair and realistic 0.1% rates for simply providing a server and not really doing anything. So I thought, wow, is it really like that? I thought these pages are all overpriced. And then I thought, I don't really know what he means, maybe it's 1-2%. So I was looking at the numbers saw the different currencies and thought: Oh well it doesn't matter, he says its good so it's just gotta be great terms. Who cares about the details, right?

So but then I was staring at the numbers a bit longer and was thinking: but come on, is a pound really worth that many dollars and it seemed just unrealistic to me. And then I kinda just did want to know. So I checked and got two numbers I felt were hugely different by about 99$ and I just thought; If I make this mistake probably a couple of others do it too. And 9 out of 10 times they won't check for it.

So I presented the numbers and tried to ask: Renton mate, it's for a good cause but do you have to present the numbers in this way?
It's not possible for an average unintelligent person with a short attention span like me to make sense of those numbers and the percentage I see there is not anywhere near of what I'd imagine to be a 'small cut (it really is small)' at these percentages. It's all subjective I know but it was just hard for me to look through the charts. That was what I was trying to say.

If people feel that wasn't the message given, I apologize for that.

pythrr: maybe some evil people downvote this, because he got a load of money the first time as charity and couldn't do jack with it. Now his benefactor is begging for more money for him. The guy is a grown man, who obviously can't handle his life and doesn't have his priorities straight. He had a the chance to get straight and he screwed up. Now the kind hearted folks should help the guy in need again. Right. But hey, you keep feeding his cats, I don't care.
