A chat function that everybody used would take away some of the scheduling that is currently needed (and holding back Open Leagues).
So coming online, peruse the coach list, contact coaches you need to play and get a game. It was more like this with IRC. However with 145 coaches (the main user of OLs during IRCs time) you would get a lot of newer coaches that hadn't committed to IRC yet. |
It doesn't defeat the object. The object is to get games played.
Yes, chat is better if you can get people to use it. The main advantage is that you get people together and have a better community feel.
The issue is that you can come online at 19:00. Sure there are coaches in the room but none are available to play.
Yes, I agree that chat would be better than PMs for many people if most of the league used it.
But, We would still be doing the same thing via chat that we are doing via PM.
What chat gives us is um... more chat
And (for some people, see Wreckage discussion) an immediate response.
But right now a lot of people are at work so will only be checking the site every now and then. So PM is probably better at this time for arranging a match for the evening.
Are you guys thinking about Secret League?
Edit: 145 Chat was great back when we had ShadyGlen to run it. But it took a lot of time/effort. |

Id prefer the massive use of letter pigeons to arrange matches.
Just think of it- it makes a lot of sense! |

id love to see christer using irc as the chat protocol and just implement some gui frontend integrated in the fumbbl site. users would then be able to use all the kinds of chats (native irc clients could be used without change).
this paired with some tweaks to the current game finding mechanisms (mainly removing the rank and let coaches preconfigure if they want to play same/lower/higher CR/all) should do the trick.. hopefully ,-) |
