Let me start by saying I love big guys. They are fun, kinda silly, and sometimes killy on teams to keep up with bashier teams, which is also useful. However, they are clearly unreliable, often requiring your blitz (wild animals) and then still doing nothing or losing their tackle zone just wo walk. It seems like more competitive players eschew them
Are there any skills that make them competitively viable? Like block to at least make them reliable hitters?
If competitive teams could give them any extra skills/stats assuming lots of luck, would they be considered reliable then or would they still be too unreliable? |

Generally speaking they are useful as a pest. Just get them in a decent position and leave them there as long as you can before moving, or making an action with them. Block is really important on a double as it means blocking them away isn't so easy. Without block even half dice blocks are pretty safe. Stand Firm is also useful for the same reasons.
Aside from that you have big guys with mutation access, where Claw and Tentacles are pretty useful.
It also depends which race you are using as not all big guys are equal, and not all races are equal.
The division you are playing in and TV your team is at can also be contributing factors for their TV efficiency. |

all big guys have a place, some have an "almost mandatory" lable on them, such as kroxigor on lizards, beast of nurgle on nurgle, troll on underworld and all those in stunty teams.
some of those you might start with them in the roster, or save and buy later, but you get them eventually.
others like rat ogre on skaven, kroxigor on slann, ogre in humans, mino in chaos or yehtee in norse you might work with one or pass on it altogether, but they are worthy inclusions if you got a plan for them, but they can feel bloaty and unecessary at times.
Then you have the case of chaos dwarf mino, which is hard to fit in the team due to being same price as chaos mino, but worse, and the rest of the team is fantastic as is, so unless you get doubles you just have a big lump of a lad that doesnt bring much to the team. Having said that, I have seen chorf minos doing great.
In conclusion, they are worth it most of the time, the golden rule for big guys is always "dont trust them" though ^^ |

Its not so much about making the team more "killy", its more making it more tanky, as they have higher strength and armour than the average player and "free" survival skills like thick skull/regen. If you can tie up two opponents with just one of your players then that's got to be a win, right? |

Then you face Clawmb and your tanky Big Guy is not tanky anymore.
At low-mid TV some Big Guys can be useful, but as the TV increases they tend to be too expensive for the impact they have on the games.
Anyway, talking about Big Guys without the context of TV and race is not very useful.
Which TV, which race? Which opponent race? |

As people are saying they're all different and depends on the skill level of the coach with them. But as a general rule I try to avoid armor 8 big guys and wild animals.
Armor 8 is a liability on a player without normal access to block meant to be in the middle and soak up blows. Any armor 8 big guy can be focused on and taken out of the game without much difficulty, they need to be baby sat with guard to make sure your pricey investment lives.
A wild animal is asking to get put on the ground and soak up your blitz for the next turn.
This means Mino and ROgre are out unless you really know what you're doing.
Any big guy that can do its job on the team without being activated is gold. |

As a general rule, I avoid big guys that have Wild Animal. The three standard ones are also AV8 and overpriced so that's suck x3. Most of the other big guys are useful. |

Skills to make Big Guys viable: mostly, "roll doubles!"
Block, and a lot of its value is making it harder to push him over; if you want him to be a more reliable hitter, Juggernaut is cheaper (but comes with its own built in costs)
After Block, Pro is great for reducing the impact of Really Stupid / Bone Head
Dodge keeps them upright (but probably doesn't, because by the time you have several doubles on a Big Guy, you're reaching TVs where Tackle is terribly common)
I'd love to take Tackle on a Big Guy, and then go kill stunties with it. Heart says yes, head and dice rolls say no.
If not doubles, mutations (if you can get them) - Claw to scare people away, and Tentacles to also make people hesitate to get close and not be able to escape again. You don't have to be hitting with the player to deny areas of the pitch to your opponent. |

An St5 Guard is incredibly useful. Just don't plan on them doing anything right when it matters. |

A mino simply needs claw+juggernaut to be competetive. |

Needs is too strong a word. With only juggernaut it performs just fine.
Without Juggernaut, though, frenzy makes it a disaster waiting to happen. |

a big guy needs either: 3d blocks with claw, tentacles, or guard/stand firm to be competitive. |

I love Big Guys... its the thematic drama they bring to the pitch. Its also why my fave team is Chaos Pact! |
