My opponent can say whatever he wants, the point is I don't want to have to read it. What matters is how it can affect my focus on the game at the moment. I don't care if someone gets punished afterwards or if other people agree with me that he was unpleasant or not.

I've played more than 1000 games and don't recall ever playing one of these people who is a problem. I assume that is because they had been reported and dealt with.

Well... apart from that one guy. But I never got drawn against him. I would probably have just refused to play him anyway.

Yeah, I know that is against the rules too. Wink

In my experience impossible requests are what spawns very negative responses. May it be because they can't be fulfilled or because they are perceived as trolling. The respondent may perceive the question for where a missing feature is already as a complaint. If you make a complaint, it matters if the complaint is warranted.
Being unable to remove a feature isn't a really warranted complaint.

What's the real reason we won't see a feature like this? Anything related to changing the client would be in the hands of Kalimar, the one who build the client.

But what Kalimar did was pretty much build the client and move on. It's not like he's entirely out of the world or anything but it's pretty rare that I see him partake on the social activities on the site. For instance right now Fumbbl lists him as 5 weeks offline.
Expecting anything but severe bug fixes at this point would be a stretch.

Conversely anything related to the site rather than the client is in the hands of Christer, owner, highest authority and designer of Fumbbl. He is very active and *could* do all kinds of changes to the site (mind you not the client).
The problem is that his feature request list is pretty long. To make an example secret league was founded I dunno... something like 3 to 5 years prior to league teams being customizable. And the feature was in the plannings even longer.

League prizes is something that has been talked about probably ever since the site exists and we still don't have it.
In the DLE we worry about a feature that allows to edit SPP on customized rosters and perhaps (in a perfect world) even allows to add injuries.

Or take the league scheduler that is still a little buggy.
Or the blackbox chat that Christer recently implemented. The list of things done and to do goes on and on.

Since it's one guy doing everything in his spare time any feature requests draws away from other things he could do. Of course what he does he only decides himself in the end.
But I guess that's also part of the reason why people can get agitated over requests here.
Basically make sure it's really important to you bother asking.

But as I said the real reason why you will never see a feature like this ever is because it's in the client, not the site.

Having an 'IDEAS and bug reports' forum will attract people like me to naively present ideas, without fully understanding the situation.
Note I have never made a complaint. Merely asked about the possibility.
Its very clear by this point that a mute option is not worth the programming time given alternative solutions.

The negative responses in this thread aren't because of an 'impossible request'. It's because my 'tone' isn't acceptable to what 'the community' authority deem acceptable. This thread has become more about hating on me than the actual issue i raised, and it seems any excuse to stop me hiding the chat and clicking the time out button, will be explored. There is another thread with a different OP where a similar thing happened, from some of the same group.

Tooby for at least one similar reason to me (Distraction), understands why I don't want to see the chat.

It really is no one elses business if I want to hide the chat or not. I never asked for opinions about whether I should do it or not. Just if it was possible. I thanked those who impartially provided the solution. And yes, the solution(s) (which I genuinely did not realise) are blatently obvious. The objective of the post wasn't to highlight to every one that I don't want to talk to them, though I reiterate, this thread shows why I don't. I just want to play the game.

Reporting abuse is not about "vengeance," but about making sure the abuser won't poison this well. If that person abuses you, chances are you're not alone in being abused by that person. Reporting abuse is just one of the little things you can do to give back to the community.

I presume that before you lose focus, you have tried to tell your opponent to shut up? In case you never did, telling something like "would you please shut up, I am trying to concentrate" usually works. Someone who still insists in talking to you when you made your wishes clear during the game (not just in one's About page) that you do not feel like chatting is not far from abusing you.

Tooby wrote:

I'm not even sure that being distracted by the chat is a thing, since my own experience goes the opposite way. It often happens that I realize my opponent is telling me something after I played my turn. So your point should apply more for situations where you are looking to get your focus back, i.e. those where you are already distracted.

***

Now, it's not hard to imagine cases where it may be better to shut up and play: a tournament's final, the league's championship, someone with whom you have nothing to exchange, a Box game against a CPOMB team, etc. The more a game is competitive, the less it can be chatty. To see how this does not require that channels get cut, let's return to the Chess example.

During a competition, is it forbidden to communicate anything unrelated to the game's protocol to your opponent:

FIDE wrote:
It is forbidden to distract or annoy the opponent in any manner whatsoever. This includes unreasonable claims, unreasonable offers of a draw or the introduction of a source of noise into the playing area.

It is also forbidden to communicate with spectators, and vice versa. Because, cheating.

To date, there has never been any reason to mute players to prevent them to annoy one another. Perhaps we could imagine a counter-example, but I don't think of any historical case where we had to resort to a device to make sure players don't talk to one another. I'm not Edward Winter, so I might be wrong. We're talking about a game where players once smoked just to annoy the hell out of the opponent.

Still, this tends to show that a little communicatin' goes a long way.

No one has attacked you in your about page though. You came across as very unfriendly in the first one I saw. It's different now though. I sent you a pm in which you have read, any chance of a response? Thanks

For a thread about not chatting, this is turning out to be very ironic.

I probably chat less than anyone, zero interest. I know this bothers some people to the point they just spam chat. Easy to ignore on own turn, and I usually find their problem quite amusing to read.

It actually is.

When I message someone, I expect that the message will sooner or later be read and a response that somehow shows that my message gets acknowledged.

Consider this real-life example.

Once upon a time, I was scheduled to play with a guy. It was hard to get a fixed time, because he wasn't very responsive to my offers, and was more onto PMing me to play right here right now, something I seldom allow.

The deadline approaching, I accept a game time right in the middle of my day. I guessed I would be alright, but I was wrong.

Something came up early - I had to deal with some kid's problem. So I tell him "afk." No response. Strange, but it was finally a false alarm - the problem could be fixed in a minute.

The game goes on. Phone call - note that I'm playing at this time because my opponent's not flexible enough to find any other time. So I say "phone." Still, no response. But alright, he plays his moves, even if he takes lots of time and if he annoyingly never chats back.

But as the game nears its critical moment, something more important in real life comes up. I need to go buy something before having to make supper. So I tell the guy that we either need to speed up or to reschedule the other half.

No response.

So I wait.

I wait.

I wait and I tell him I'm waiting for a response.

Then, after a long while, he shows up, and out of a sudden, asks me something like "why aren't you playing?"

That guy, believe it or not, never read the chat box. He told me that he was doing something else while I was playing, and that he was just wondering what was happening because the GUI was failing to tell him that it was his turn.

So I said goodbye and disconnected.

That guy is not around anymore.

This could easily be shown wrong - pick just about any victim playing or tone policing line.

In everyone else's defence, you entirely missed the boat when it comes understanding the true Spirit of this game.

We haven't played in ages. But...when we played, we had a fun game and the chat was good from what I can remember! :p

This thread has taught me that I find public self-delusion quite entertaining. Which is weird because I usually feel sorry for people who embarrass themselves. Guess the empathy-meter is flaking out in my old age.

On a scale. Personally I think more people have been more rude to me in this thread, than I ever have by not replying in game. I've seen the same behavior in other threads.

This site, (not in game, but the forums) seems to have become very authoritarian.

The minority of posters in this thread don't represent the very large player base on FUMBBL, despite seeming to consider themselves the authority. In fact I wonder if the majority of the players don't do a great deal of speaking in game any way (hi hf gg, gg max)
