This question has actually been posted in another thread (http://fumbbl.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=6282&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 ), but as I realised it would just get lost in all the small-talk (and maybe in pies) I decided to post it here as a new thread, because I really would like to hear what you have to say about it.

There has been a lot of talk around bad language on fumbbl and inappropriate terminology used in chat and with team names. I'm sure there will be a fair number of sighs and "We've been over this..."s, but that is always in a thread concerning one team and one angry coach, and
the answers are vague at best, and sometimes contradictory (as when two approvers had contradictory views on whether they should censor the name 'Hitler' or not).

So, here it goes:

Let's say you get two brand new Amazone teams on your "desk" that you have to look at and either approve or dismiss.
1) Team number one is called 'Pussies in Boots' and features names like Cinderella and Snow White.
2) Team number two is called 'Working Girls' and the players have names like Asia Carrera, Silvia Saint and Aria Giovanni.

What would you do? Which one would go through and which one would you cencor? Would you allow both, or maybe stop both?

I cannot recall ever seeing a team like number one, but I know I have seen a few of the number two type. Hypocrisy?

Number one gets refused.

Number two is not offensive. Just boring.

Imho (I am not an approver, and I'll never be)

I find neither offensive, and would approve them both.
Naturally, if anyone lodged a complaint with the admins, then the offending team/player would be renamed appropriately.

Likewise, I'm not an approver.

As an approver, #1 would not be approved. Why? Common sense.

If you lack it just pretend your 4 year old boy/girl is telling your mom about your new Blood bowl team. If that would embarrass you then don't use the name.

ie = " hi grandma, daddy just got finished playing with Pussies in Boots"
Grandma ' oh how nice"

If you cant see the difference between #1 and #2 then there is little hope in you understanding the explanation. Really people, use common sense. And yes, some approvers will approve #1 because everyone has different lines that they will allow crossed.

Some names like "Freindly F-ckers" would never get approved by anyone, but you example above could be considered funny enough and harmless enough to let fly. IF your player names were names of cartoon cats or something along those lines, Id be more inclined to pass it through. But the connotation you use is too obvious.

The point is Pussies in Boots is a reference to a famous fairy tail/nursery rhyme.

It has a double meaning to some, and a singular meaning to others (in the gutter for some, and very much family friendly for others).

Those who would have banned the first were either ignorant (for not knowing the children's literary association) or erring on the side of caution despite being well read. If you were quick to dismiss the first name, perhaps you were also too quick to judge.

It's Puss in boots... not pussy or pussies in boots.

Then think of the first name being disapproved due to error on the side of caution. It would be ignorant to ignore the possible sexual connotation, however innocent were your initial intentions.

I'm not an appover either, but I'd pass both.

'Pussies' has another meaning (where I live anyway Smile ) as in "don't be such a pussy" denoting a 'wuss', 'softy', 'cry-baby' etc and when you look at it like that the name is kinda funny (i.e. self-deprecating). Either way if all the player names are story book characters I can't see why a reasonable person would take offense given that there's no other reference to the smutty interpretation of the word.

Would any one accpet 'Cowcockies' by the way ? A cowcocky is a beef/dairy farmer for those not familiar with the term. Same reasoning - you have to be overly sensitive IMHO to take offense.

"Pusses in Boots" i would think is okay (as a reference to Puss in Boots), but probably not Pussies in Boots.

Case by case you can make an argument for almost anything. But overall the idea is perception. How will the team name be percieved is the main question an approver should ask. No mater how "clever" the team name is in relation to the players names, the fact is most coaches only ever see the team name. Be it in gamefinder or in chat when a game result is announced. Therefore "Pussies in Boots" is out. For the same reasons I wouldn't approve a team called "Scratchin' Cocks" (which is but a reference to male poultry at feeding time) "Huge Boobies" (oversized members of the Galapagos birds) "Ass Handler" (donkey guide) etc.
Point is most of it simply comes off as "juvenile" at best. Not really that funny in the first place and gets less funny over time.

As one who sees these things everyday trust me...thre are better ways to name a team! No go get creative!

Okey, let's see now. It seems to me that some of you think that these two names and themes are the two I'm thinking about for my new Zons. That is not the case. I choose them for this thread because they have certain properties that make them interesting in a discussion. No.1 has a lot of ambiguity in it (I think I have 4-5 different interpretations of it) while no.2 is quite clear (I have two interpretations). I see it as "tabu language" vs. "tabu subjects", and I feel that the way it works today is VERY fuzzy on how to deal with this.

@Mully:
Well, is it really that clear? Of the 4-5 interpretations I've found only 2 could in any way be seen as sexual and/or derogatory, while no.2 is all about sex, any way you turn it.

Would "Look mama! Tracie Lords just scored!" be better, you think?

Yes, I see a difference. I wrote them, didn't I?

I figured you would say something like that, and that's why I didn't use cat names for the players. That would have, as you say, made the name less ambiguous.

Gran, you forget that not all of us watch porn with such intensity as to remember the names of the oppressed women whose sexuality is being exploited for money. And many of us won't even want to know what tarcy lords aor whoever she is, has done. So Just the traci lords doesn't have a connotations. Not to me anyway, I have never seen her perform and I have not the least bit of desire to see her and male genitalia in the same picture. So if I wouldn't watch porn, the name in itself would have no meaning to me whatsoever. "Traci lords just scored" Well, good for her.
