So, the stats in the team yearbooks: Just noticed this guy has a negative passing record: -1.

Is this because he passed backwards? And if he passed 9 squares forwards and then 10 squares backwards would he have this statistic? or would it show 19? Anyone know how this works?

yes, it is because he passed backwards. It's the net progression that's counted. If you throw 10 spaces sideways, it will show up as 0 forward.

Yes, passing yards is amount of yards passed forwards (so for passing backwards you get negative passing yards). Same goes for rushing yards.
