What would happen in the case of not being able to pick any more skills from his allowed selection of skills.
e.g. Big Guy such as ogre has already got 5 rolls and selected all normally allowed skills for him. i.e 5 strength skills and then has a another roll for a normal skill which there isn't any. |

Then the Big Guy is allowed to choose any skill that would usually be a double. |

Not precisely. He still can't take stand firm unless he actually rolls doubles, but he could take any non-trait skill from the other skill categories. |

Therefore reaching 76 starplayer points is a great moment for a big guy whether he hasn't rolled a double or stat increase. |

Yes, precisely. from the LRB
Quote: | On a Star Player roll of 2-9 the player is allowed to take a new skill (traits may only be taken on a double as described below). If no remaining new skills are available for this player to take then the player may ignore the result and treat the result as if doubles had been rolled instead. |
There is nothing that prevents you from taking Stand Firm, as you can take traits on a double. |

this requires a bit of rule-lawyering, but it seems you're right. |

No, it doesn't. I am willing to concede that it requires a bit of rules-reading, though.
If the wording had been "If no remaining skills are available for this player to take, he/she may choose a new skill as if the dice roll had been a double." then the rules lawyering would apply, as one could argue that if the dice roll were a double you could also take a trait and the other side could argue that the word "skill" prevents you from taking traits. This is not the case though, the wording of the rule is very clear and no amount of lawyering has to be applied to understand it. |
