Here are the screenshots on which I have based my explanation:
Case 1: Friendly players give assist/remove enemy assists
The Chaos warrior on the left side is ST4, so it is 3D because the other two red players assist the ball and chain. Also, the red player on the right cancels the skink's assists and therefore the B&C gets 3D on all the skinks
Case 2: Enemy players do not give assists vs. friendly players (but they do vs. enemy players)
The B&C gets 3D vs. the chaos warrior (ST4), which would not be the case if the skinks gave assist. But the skinks do give assists to each other, so that's why it's only 2D vs them.
Case 3: Enemy players can cancel friendly assists
The skink on the top left corner cancels one of the red players assists, and therefore the B&C only gets 2D vs. the chaos warrior. |

Right, but I'm not sure that's correct, in particular, case 2 seems off. If assisting is optional, shouldn't enemy players be able to assist the chaos warrior, therefore making it a 2D? |

Because you can only assist "companions". As example 2 is not a "companion" being hit they do not assist. |
