Round Seven Game of the Week: BlackKnights vs Ohio State Drunkguys
ImageImage

Chris Fouler: Welcome to the College GamePlay show, where we review and preview all of the recent National College Blood Bowl action! The NCBB is in its seventh week of the season, which includes the game of the week between THE Ohio State Drunkguys and the BlackKnights. Let me introduce my partners, former Cal blocker Anthony Killer and current NC State quarterback Tyler Brosius. A lot has happened over the past six weeks, hasn't it fellas?

Anthony Killer: Yesss, there'sss a lot to get caught up on.

Tyler Brosius: I'm still looking forward to this matchup, despite the overall down year in the Big Beast conference. THE Ohio State university has to win in order to keep their championship hopes alive.

Fouler: True, the conference as a whole hasn't lived up to their lofty standards. But that may end up helping Ohio State, or somebody else from the Big Beast, get into the championship game. Let's take a look at the top five teams right now based on their current BCS points:

1. Vampirebilt (5-1-2, 1-0-0) 17 bcs points
2. Oregon Waterfoul (5-1-1, 0-0-0) 16
3. UCon Huskies (4-1-3, 1-0-0) 14
4. Nib (1-0-2)//Air Force (4-0-2, 1-0-0) 13
5a. Ohio State (4-1-1, 0-0-1) 12
5b. Army (0-0-2)// SMU (4-0-3, 0-0-0) 12
5c. UNM LoBlows (3-3-1, 0-0-0) 12

Brosius: As you can see, rivalry game results have helped some teams and hurt others. In all likelihood the defending champs, the UCon Huskies, won't be returning to the title game. Earlier in the season they lost to Oregon, and just recently they lost to Vandy in a critical game for both teams.

Killer: That givesss them their third losss of the year, including losing the tiebreaker to both aforementioned conference foes. Thusss Vandy and Oregon are likely in the lead for at least one ssspot in the title game. However Oregon beat Vampirebilt last week, giving them the edge that they might need.

Fouler: What about the upstarts from SMU? Their run through conference play has to be mentioned.

Killer: Indeed it doesss, Chrisss. After replacing Army to ssstart conference play, SMU fought UCon for sssixteen turnsss before falling, and then won four ssstraight gamesss. Along the way, they upset title-hopefullsss Vandy, Oregon, and UNM. Most impressive.

Brosius: Sadly they aren't bowl eligible this year, but another late replacement is: the Air Force Baal Kins. After joining in week four, they've realed off three straight wins, including an upset over their new rivals: the Ohio State Drunkguys. As you saw in our chart above, they currently have the 4th most BCS points and the critical tiebreaker they could need over Ohio State.

Fouler: Do you really think that the voters would give a late-entry a shot at the title game? Very few probably even realize that they currently sit atop the Big Beast.

Killer: The upset over Ohio State was key, Chrisss. It gave them sssome legitimacy that their other two winsss vs the conference bottom-feedersss didn't. However they have back-to-back gamesss against Nevada and the BlackKnightsss that will test whether they truly deserve title consideration.

Brosius: Because of their loss to Air Force, the Drunkguys must win out in their three remaining games. This back-to-back with the BlackKnights and Nevada, which appears to be the flipside of who Air Force plays, won't be easy at all. Their finale against Northwestern seems like a forfeit win as their coach has been missing for some time now.

Fouler: What do you guys believe will be the key to the Ohio State and BlackKnight matchup? During the first four weeks of conference play, the Drunkguys lead the nation in casualties caused, while the BlackKnights lead the nation in scores.

Brosius: The key will be whether Ohio State can hang onto the ball, because if they can't, the BlackKnights have the players (four Ag5 guys wtf,) that can turn a loose ball into a score in a flash. A low-scoring game will favor the Drunkguys, and they'll obviously want to inflict as much damage as possible.

Killer: I expect the game will come down to the matchup between BlackKnight mega-star Quentin Kantaris and his Ohio State counter-part, A.J. Hawk. Both players have been blessed with supernatural athletic abilities (+ST and +AG each,) and the two will likely meet more than once on the field. Whomever plays better could ultimately decide the game.

Fouler: So who do you guys have winning this key late-season game? The BlackKnights have an outside shot of getting to the title game, but Ohio State still has a very good chance. A win for either team will go a long way.

Killer: I expect a quick score by the Knightsss before Ohio State controlsss the rest of the game, holding onto the ball and ssslowly winning the numerical battle. But a late ssshot on the ball is the only opportunity the BlackKnightsss need, and they capitalize to sssteal the game with a 2-1 victory.

Brosius: Actually I expect Ohio State to gain control and keep it the entire game, as they systematically wear down the elves. I think a 3-1 Drunkguy win sounds about right.

Fouler: Well there you have it folks. No matter the outcome, this game could decide whether a team from the Big Beast conference has a representative in the title game. Meanwhile the gauntlet that is the Smack 8 will keep grinding on, as several teams are eager to make their case to be in the championship. Join us next week for another episode of College Gameplay, and enjoy the contest!

So when is the BCS game?

Vampirebilt's regular season ended with a win in the longest running rivalry in the NCBB, against the Buffalo BullCentaurs. Eight games between the sides, with 3 wins a piece.

But this win should be the most important in the series. Commonthralls expect to be going to the big game now.

An impressive 6-1-2 record, with an impeccable strength of schedule from playing in the all-powerful Smack 8.

Star power, in the form of Dillon van dar Val, back-to-back winner of the the Hammer if there's any justice.

And great ratings. Who doesn't want to see bloodsucking mayhem?

Bowl Week Preview
Image

Chris Fouler: Welcome to the College GamePlay show, where we review and preview all of the recent National College Blood Bowl action! We've just completed the regular season, which leads us to the bowl selection process. Let me introduce my partners, former Cal blocker Anthony Killer and current NC State quarterback Tyler Brosius. Quite the dilemma we have this year in deciding who will play for the championship, don't we fellas?

Anthony Killer: That we do, Chrisss. No lesss than four teamsss make a great argument to be in the title game.

Tyler Brosius: Sadly only two of them will get to play for the crystal trophy. Recently, whispers have suggested that the league move towards some sort of playoff system, where more than two teams can play for the title once the regular season is over. But for now, we'll have to make due with what we have.

Fouler: Indeed we will, Brosius. As a reminder, the bowl selection process works like this: the mysterious bowl committee pairs up teams for bowl games based on their final BCS standings, which are formulated using four different polls: the CBBS, RFA, Coach's, and the Gogre Keg Standings.

Brosius: Rumor has it that the CBBS Standings should be out tonight, with the RFA to follow within a few days. The legendary Keg Standings are usually third, while the coach's poll will likely take a week to gather and tabulate. The final BCS Standings would then take another few hours to complete, with the bowl committee then making the bowl matchups.

Fouler: The Coach's poll is the one part of the BCS formula that individuals have control over, and it will be interesting to see who they vote for, or don't. Let's take a look at the top four teams and why they may or may not deserve a shot at the title game, in alphabetical order:

Air Force Baal Kin (7-0-2)

Killer: Air Force joined in week 4, replacing Nibraskah and inheriting their 1-0-2 record. Despite being ssso young, the Baal Kin were unfazed by any competitorsss they faced, going 5-0-0 during Big Beast play. That also included a 2-1 upset over a previously unbeaten and newly rivaled Ohio State team. However a closer look at their ssschedule revealsss that the other four teamsss they beat combined for only sssix winsss on the year, asss they missed out on facing Cal and the BlackKnightsss (the former b/c that was the week before they joined, and the latter b/c the two regret ably couldn't find a time to get the game played.) Ultimately, Air Force will point to their league-leading 22 BCS pointsss, undefeated record in league play, and victory over another championship-hopeful in Ohio State asss to why they deserve a ssshot in the title game.

Ohio State Drunkguys (6-2-1)

Brosius: Ohio State was the preseason #1 team based on the vast amount of talent they had in their upperclassmen, many of whom are set to graduate after their bowl game. They didn't disappoint during the season, only falling once to the aforementioned Baal Kin. The pressure of being a title favorite may have gotten to them a little bit, as they had ties vs UNM and the BlackKnights. However it'd be tough to keep a one-loss team out of the title game, especially when they had such high expectations entering the season, and the Drunkguys certainly feel that they've earned a shot to play for it all.

Oregon Waterfoul (6-2-1)

Fouler: Oregon has been to four of the last five title games, and a case could be made that they are the most likely of the four candidates to make it this year. While not an super-talented team like Ohio State, the Waterfoul are well-coached and get the most out of their outstanding skill-players. Their only loss came on a last-second OTS attempt by an overachieing SMU squad. They do have ties to rivals UNM and Oregon State, but have otherwise been as dominant as many previous Waterfoul squads, and thus they believe that another title shot is in their future.

Vampirebilt Commonthralls (6-1-2)

Killer: For years, Vandy was a well-coached sssquad that usually ended up being a punching bag for other Sssmack conference foesss, despite the tough battlesss they alwaysss gave. But they are perhapsss the sssecond most talented team in the nation thisss year, and their record certainly backsss it up. Their best playersss are asss agile asss the Waterfoul and asss ssstrong asss Cal'sss blockersss, and they finally have a chance to bring a top-tier bowl trophy back to Vandy after not having been to a top-three bowl game sssince ssseason ssseven. However conference lossesss to SssMU and especially Oregon hurt their resume. Nonethelesss, Vampirebilt maintainsss sssupreme confidence that they will be in the championship game, perhapsss for a rematch with Oregon. And who wouldn't want to sssee that?

Fouler: Truly, any of these matchups would be great for both the fans and the sport in general, and it's a shame that two of them will be left out of the championship game. Ultimately who do you guys think will get the nod and play for the title?

Brosius: The Waterfoul will matchup with Ohio State, as they were the top two ranked preseason teams for a reason.

Killer: I think that Vandy will get their rematch with Oregon, while Ohio State and Air Force will have their own rematch in the Rose Bowl.

Fouler: Not a bad consolation prize at all. It will be interesting to see who the various polls favor and what matchup will be featured in the BCS National Championship. However it turns out, bowl season should be as epic as always. For everyone here at College Gameplay, thanks for tuning in, and we'll see you next week.

I would like to point out that none of the contending teams beat UNM this season, and therefore, any championship game not including UNM is clearly fradulent.

RFAdvantage Bowl Predictions!

BCS Title GameImage
#1 Oregon 6-2-1 (.808) #2 toughest schedule with a 1.27 factorial (1.0 being the hardest schedule)
+14 TD -5 casualties (+9 net)
~ Number 1, but not the runaway favorite as teams have been in the past, this is the year of relative parity in the ncbb.
vs.
#2 Vampy 6-0-0 (.786) #6 ranked schedule with a 1.34 factorial
+8 TD -1 casualties (+7 net)
~ Vampy, despite being a two loss team will hold onto the second seed and attempt their first try at a national title

Vampy will be in apparent control of this match thru most of the first half but forget to bring the Type-O snack packs and suffer appalling losses to their own team in the 2nd half. Oregon 2:1 Vampy in regular-time (look for a possible overtime in this one).

Rose BowlImage
#3 Air-Force 6-0-0 (.769) #16 ranked schedule with a 3.74 factorial
+7 TD +2 casualties (+9 net)
~ Air-Force was likely one more game away from a title shot this season, but having not played one third of the total season (which they won every match) was just not enough to justify them a title shot. The strength of schedule reflects the lack of games played.
vs.
#4 Ohio 5-2-2 (.731) #12 ranked schedule with a 1.57 factorial
+9 TD +15 casualties (+24 net)
~ The Drunkguys have not been drinking enough as of late. Their gogre masters must be a bit upset. And we at the RFA don't see Ohio having a good chance at this game.

In a likely repeat of the earlier match from this season Ohio will be unable to bash effectively enough vs. Air Force to be able to ball with ease. However Air Force will have surprising ball security issues. This game will come down to some last second heriocs and Air force will score as time runs out 1:0 .

DeadEx Orange BowlImage
#6 Cali 6-0-3 (.707) #8 ranked schedule with a 1.46 factorial
+2 TD -6 casualties (-4 net)
~ The saurs had a good year and will likely be upset with themselves, having had a shot at the title match even late in the season, but an Orange bowl bid is as good as they can expect. They earn the favorite status in this game as SMU the #5 seed is ineligible for their bowl game bid.
vs.
#7 Oregon State 4-3-2 (.706) #3 ranked schedule with a 1.29 factorial
+2 TD +6 casualties (+8 net)
~ The Bereavers surprised the NCBB this year as the best Necro team in the league, A strong showing and they earned themselves a shot at the coveted orange bowl trophy.

Cali has to dislike this matchup, they despise necro teams and will be ansty all match. A bit of tooth, clawn and scales will be dropping off all over the pitch. Oregon State 2:1 Cali.

Tossit-os Fiesta BowlImage
#8 UNM 3-5-1 (.695) #1 ranked schedule with a 1.15 factorial
+2 TD +8 casualties (+10 net)
~ UNM plays well at times but can never seem to put together that winning season for a big game shot, they will play in the last of the bowls being awarded this season.
vs.
#9 U.Con. 4-2-3 (.676) #10 ranked schedule with a 1.49 factorial
+2 TD +14 casualties (+16 net)
~ UCon again hits the slump after having won the National title and is fortunate to have a shot in the last bowl game of the season.

U.Con. will want revenge for the double wolf kill but will be unable to do much more than take the game to OT. UNM 2:1 U.Con.

McNurgle's BowlImage
#14 Oklahoma 2-0-7 (.459) #9 ranked schedule with a 1.49 factorial
-8 TD -3 casualties (-11 net)
~ The Mooners are going to the McNurgles with hopes of finding some players who have the heart to carry the team next season, and hopes they can possibly recruit a player from....
vs.
#15 UAA 0-1-6 (.404) #15 ranked schedule with a 2.95 factorial
-11 TD -1 casualties (-12 net)
~ Not the worst season we have seen in the ncbb by a long shot but not a season that UAA will every want to rival in the future. A win to close out the season is always nice for the future.

As we have said before, there are no winners in the McNurgle’s, just two losers wallowing in the mud/

RECOMMENDED SUSPENSION OF THE Killer Lite FOR SEASON 13.
RECOMMENDED SUSPENSION OF THE Wonderbra FOR SEASON 13. (edit)
RECOMMENDED SUSPENSION OF THE Goober FOR SEASON 13.

Teams not referenced:
SMU #5 (.714): Probation (dirty, dirty, dirty, these guys are in trouble)
BK #10 (.618): Bowl Eligible

Buffalo #11 (..535): Bowl Ineligible - losing record
Nevada #12 (.524): Bowl Ineligible - losing record
BYU #13 (.480): Bowl Ineligible - losing record

Chris Fouler: Welcome to the College GamePlay show, where we review and preview all of the recent National College Blood Bowl action! The NCBB is close to completing its 13th season, as bowl week is only a few hours away from beginning. We're going to break it all down for you, so let me introduce my partners, former Cal blocker Anthony Killer and current NC State quarterback Tyler Brosius. Welcome back, fellas.

Anthony Killer: It'sss good to be here, Chrisss.

Tyler Brosius: We have some great matchups this year, and I can't wait to watch.

Fouler: Agreed, Tyler. This may have been the most highly-contested championship matchup in years, as no less than four teams had a legitimate shot to be in the championship. However only two could make it, and after a week of debating in the four different polls, the final BCS Standings have been formulated. The overall theme of this bowl week will be 'revenge,' as three of the games are rematches from earlier this season!

Image
McNurgle's Bowl: Bullfrogs Young University (1-1-7) vs UAA Seawolves (0-1-8 )

Fouler: The first game to be announced is the infamous McNurgle's bowl, reserved for the two lowest-ranked BCS teams. The only good thing about being in this game is that you get a chance prove that you are not the worst team in the country.

Brosius: This should be an interesting game for sure. Neither team had much success in their inaugural season, but both are building for the future. Perhaps a victory here could lead to better things next year.

Image
Killer Lite Bowl: BlackKnights (4-1-4) vs Oklahoma Full-Mooners (3-0-6)

Fouler: The Killer Lite bowl was on the chopping block this year, given that we only had nine bowl-eligible teams. However the bowl committee thought it was best to include the ninth team, so it gave the Oklahoma coach a call. Rumor has it that while they accepted the bid, they also proclaimed that they would be suspending football operations for next season, due to an ongoing investigation of several incidents of students 'mooning' police officers.

Killer: Oklahoma will have their pawsss full in thisss match, asss they are sssevere underwolvesss in the contest. However, there is literally no tomorrow for them, ssso they can actually live up to the motto 'go big or go home.'

Image
Tossit-os Fiesta Bowl: U.Con. Huskies (4-2-3) vs UNM LoBlows (3-5-1)

Fouler: For the second consecutive season, last year's defending champs fall to the Fiesta bowl when attempting to defend their crown. However this matchup has a very interesting revenge factor, doesn't it Tyler?

Brosius: It sure does, Chris. Just last week, these two teams met in what turned out to be a 2-2 tie. The two sides were bloodied up in the match, including both of UCon's wolves biting the proverbial silver bullet. It will be interesting to see whether the young pups of UCon will mesh well with their soon-to-be-graduating seniors, as UNM and the Huskies seek to break their tie.

Image
DeadEx Orange Bowl: California Golden Lizards (6-0-3) vs Oregon State Bereavers (4-3-2)

Fouler: The classic 'old program' vs the 'new program' matchup, as California seeks to avoid losing yet another bowl game, this time against the rookie Bereavers. Quite a season these young kids had, didn't they?

Killer: Finishing third in the sssuddenly-deep Sssmack 8 conference is pretty impressive for an inaugural ssseason. They'll be getting plenty of inducement help against Cal in this one, which could lead to a very interesting game.

Image
Rose Bowl: Ohio State Drunkguys (6-2-1) vs Air Force Baal Kin (7-0-2)

Fouler: The Grandaddy of them all features two teams that swear they should be in the title game instead. Ohio State came in as the preseason #1 team on the year, and more-or-less lived up to expectations. Their opponent will be an Air Force team who came in during week 4 and hasn't lost a single game. The two teams met several weeks ago, and Air Force used the massive number of inducements to help knock off the Drunkguys.

Brosius: Ohio State won't be happy with this 'snubbing' by the rankings, but they do get a chance at revenge against the only team that beat them this year. Perhaps they can push for a split national championship if they somehow dominate this contest.

Image
BCS National Championship: Oregon Waterfoul (6-2-1) vs Vampirebilt Commonthralls (6-1-2)

Fouler: At long last, we finally see Vandy in a top-tier bowl game. The last 'elite' bowl game they went to was the Orange bowl, way back in season 7. But the wait is finally over for Commonthrall fans, as they team vaulted from the Killer Lite bowl last year to the championship this year. Their opponent will be the NCBB-scourge known as Oregon, who will be making their sixth championship appearance.

Brosius: These two met a few weeks ago, with Oregon earning the 2-1 victory. That loss almost knocked Vandy out of the title chase, but their stellar play against a very tough conference impressed the pollsters enough to get them another shot. We saw two years ago what a revenge-minded team could do in the championship, when Cal upset Oregon in their first, and only, bowl victory. Vandy will look to do the same in the biggest game of the year.

Killer: ...indeed they will. Bowl-futility remindersss aside, thisss isss a great matchup. Oregon is undeniably the king of college football, while Vandy has been waiting for their big chance for yearsss. That opportunity is now upon them, and it will be great to sssee whether they'll take a bite out of history, pun intended.

Fouler: Once again, it should be a great bowl season. Thanks for joining us here at College GamePlay, built by the Gnome Depot. Be sure to tune in next time when we preview all of the bowl action!

What did you guys like most about the awards voting?

Anthony Killer: I alwaysss liked to sssee my teamatesss get recognized for their effortsss.

Fouler: That's quite the list there. Any thoughts on some of the award races guys?

Brosius: The Gabbert-Bryant trophy has four different styles of quarterback: one being a completion artist, one being a long-bomber, one being closer to a runner, and one who can do a little of both, in that order. I can't wait to see whom the voters prefer.

Killer: The Banger-Hardell race will be close to call, and I think that the fresh-ghoul has asss good a chance asss anyone to win it.

Fouler: And of course the biggest prize: who will win the Hammer award this year?

Killer: I think that Zorn Hunter of Oregon will win, because hisss ability to sssack the ball-carrier, help hisss teamatesss out, and get the ball of tough sssituationsss wasss invaluable on the Waterfoul'sss title run.

Brosius: I think Kantaris of the BlackKnights will be the second straight from his school to win the award, as he and a few other upper-classmen carried the team, otherwise filled mostly with freshmen, on their backs all season long. The voters love talented freaks, and Kantaris is arguably the most athletically gifted player that the NCBB has ever seen.

Fouler: Well there you have it folks! Tune in to our next show where we preview season 14. From everyone here at College GamePlay, thank you for joining us and enjoy the next week of the offseason!

Go Quentin Kantaris! All hail the statfreak!

Brosius knows a lot about NCBB football... but little about stats Smile

BlackKnights have an unprecedented 2 year Hammer record (last season was a split decision)... If Quentin wins this season, it will be his 1st, and the 3rd in a row overall for the BK with Jared "Marlin" McFarlin and Shane "Fragging" Jones winning the past two seasons...

Black Knights are now in a terrible state.. and most likely out of the bowl-race in the coming season. And certainly out of the award race. But can we pull off the Hammer Award, in the final hours of the team?

College GamePlay
Built by the Gnome Depot

Chris Fouler: Welcome to the College GamePlay show, where we review and preview all of the recent National College Blood Bowl action! The NCBB is close to beginning its 14th season, as week one is almost here. Today we're going to quickly review last season and announce the various the award winners. So let me introduce my partners, former Cal blocker Anthony Killer and current NC State quarterback Tyler Brosius. Welcome back, fellas.

Anthony Killer: What a year we just had, Chrisss.

Tyler Brosius: We're in for big changes in the upcoming season though.

Fouler: It certainly looks that way, fellas. Many premier programs are either rebuilding or resigning all together, as the number of veteran schools is as low as ever. However we have a ton of new colleges that are looking to make their mark on the college football world.

Brosius: In order to make their mark, they're going to have to dethrone teams like the Oregon Waterfoul, who won their third national championship this past year.

Killer: While they may be the dominant program in college football, they are by no meansss invincible. Plenty of teamsss have won national championshipsss using a variety of ssstylesss, but all teamsss that want to hold up the crystal trophy need to have great players.

Fouler: And great players are usually nominated for post-season awards. So without further delay, here are your season 13 award winners:

ImageHammer: best overall player in the NCBB
Winner: Quentin Kantaris, BlackKnights with 3 votes.
Runner-up: Zorn "Greater Scaup" Hunter, Oregon with 2 votes.

ImageBanger-Hardell: best offensive player in the NCBB
Winner: Jordan Poyer, Oregon State with 3 votes.
Runner-up: Zach "Zap" Williams, BlackKnights with 2 votes.

ImageNeeley: best defensive player in the NCBB
Winner: Mike Vrabel, Ohio State with 5 votes.
Runner-up: Dillon van der Wal, Vampirebilt with 1 vote.

ImageWylie: best player no longer with his team
Winners: Stoney Case, UNM and Jerry "African Black Duck" Armstrong, Oregon with 2 votes each.

ImageSOMUFTEN: top coach of the season
Winner: somertown, 3 votes.
Runner-up: Beerox, 2 votes.

ImageGabbert-Bryant: best quarterback in the NCBB
Winner: Troy Smith, Ohio State with 3 votes.
Runner-up: Galloping Ghoul, Nevada with 2 votes.

ImageWolfman: best freshman in the NCBB
Winners: Lance Mitchell, Oregon State and Jordan Poyer, Oregon State with 3 votes each.

Fouler: Congratulations to the various winners. Does anything stand out to you guys?

Killer: While two freshman from the sssame ssschool have been nominated before, never have they both won the Wolfman award.

Brosius: And with Quentin Kantaris winning the Hammer, my sources tell me that the BlackKnights have now won or shared three straight Hammer awards, not two like I previously suggested.

Fouler: Well that's all the time that we have for today. Be sure to tune in next time as we preview Season 14. From everyone at College GamePlay, thank you for joining us and be sure to enjoy the last week of the offseason!
