You are not an artist, you don't know how to edit pictures with your computer, but you would really like to have some custom icons for your star players. Then you are at the right place
After I posted my Custom Icons [undeads] blog entry, a few of you came to me asking how to do the same. So I decided to write this post, I hope it will help
First you need a tool to edit the icons, if you don't have one yet (paint won't do the job) go for The GIMP. For the average home user, the Gimp is just as good as Photoshop. The gimp has layers, alpha channels, a robust plugin architecture, If you want to know more, that's where you want to go: Gimp.org. Anyway time to download and install it.
You are done? Great! So now we can start working on that new icon. We need a subject for our experiment. This will do (Thanks Gildor)
Editing the icons:
I want you to understand what we are trying to do. You and I aren't artist, we can't design an icon from scratch ... But we can mix several ones to make it easier for us to see what's going on in the pitch. In this case we want to make it obvious this player is a nice ST5 human. Hence we will mix a ST5 icon with a human thrower one ... Like those two:
and , sounds like a fun result Open those both with The GIMP. You'll find them in your /pics/icons directory, they are named hthrower1.gif and ogre3.gif.
Now we have to decide how to mix them, I'll go for the thrower's body and ogre's head. To do the opposite is fun too, but already did it for that player and wanna try the other way
Start by zooming in by 800% on the ogre and the thrower.
Because the colors used by this pic format can be troublesome later, you want to switch from "indexed" to RVB (Image >> mode >> RVB) for the destination pic, here the thrower.
Now switch to the ogre and select this tool gimp provides:
Using it select the head of your ogre (be sure to zoom 800% first).
Don't worry if it's not perfect, it's easy to correct little mistakes later. Copy it, and past it in the thrower's pic.
Now switch back to indexed color (image >> mode >> indexed) and save the pic. You might want to create a new folder for those custom icons, let's say pics/icons/customs/hthrowerst5.gif.
Repeat the steps for the *an *b *ban version of the icons and see what you'll get:
Getting the icons to show in the game:
This would be pointless if you can't get them to actualy show in the game
Edit the icons.ini file that should be in your base JavaBBowl directory, and given you want that thrower named Schlürfi Rasenzertreterchen (geez) to show with those icons you saved in a pics/icons/customs/ directory, add those lines at the end:
Code: | [PLAYERS]
SCHLüRFI RASENZERTRETERCHEN=customs/hthrowerst5.gif |
Hence only this human thrower will show with this icon, that's quite a handy feature. Here is the result on a pitch:
And another example I like quite much, here are some of the players I'm facing in my next FC match:
From the left: A dirty skeleton, a ST4 skeleton, a dirty zombie, a ST4 ghoul and a skilled zombie (block, tackle and guard).
Have fun editing
Regards, Dirty Brian |

Now that People know how to customize there icons I think it is time to do some comercial for the Slaanesh Icons again. I made them a quite some time back and at the time I did not know how to make an icon stick for a specific player.
The Pack contains a Calw CW and a claw Beastman + a Deamonett and a Keeper of secrets.

and have a look at them. |

One question I have, and I apologize if you already talked about it in another post, is will these new icons show up for the opponents, or will they see just the normal ones? I would love to customize every single one of my players, but don't want to do it if no one can see them. :/ |

The icons you see are the ones you set in your icons.ini file. For your opponent to see yours he has to download them and set his icons.ini accordingly. At the moment, the main use to custom icons is to make your life easier when playing (and a bit more entertaining too). For me it works great
It might be different in the future tho, my hope goes to Falesh's upcoming LRB5 client. |

Ok, thanks for the info! Yeah it would rock if future clients would do it. We already have it where the client will download custom player images, so why not the icons too? That would really open up the playing field on making the teams truly unique looking, like painting the figurines in RL.

A couple I created fairly quickly.
The first for Guard, as two heads are better than one you know...
And the second for +ST, giving him a bit of Ogre Powah.
Thanks again DirtyBrian, you have cost me hours of my life. |

Hey, I'm glad you made this post. After helping me out so much, I made some Icons for my Boat Rockers. Soon I'll have the rest finished, I just need to figure out how to package it all like the Hell Fishes

A bit off topic but. There are problems if the Client DL opponents icons. Some people used circles do you want to look at that? Maby You are used to looking at sertent icons and prefere that. There might eaven be a sneaky git out there that would put wrong icons on his players just to confuse opponent. So if the Client will DL opponents Icons this need to be an option that you can turn on and off preferebly under the game. |

I have always wondered how many people actually use the icons for my SWL team We Fink Wer Orks.
Those were done by resizing the player portraits, and then cleaning up the edges (which pretty much had to be done pixel by pixel).
Edit: P.S. and yes, I'm really just trying to show off my fancy icons |
