So when I download the new version, every weirdo race turns back into little Ls with circles around them. What's the quick way to fix that problem again?

copy your old icons from /icons to /iconssmall .. seems to be some fault with 7.9

Also, it sounds like it might be your positions.ini. See if you can grab your backup or maybe get BloodBasherMasher's Universal FUMBBL pack (691k .zip file) with portraits, icons and small icons for every single player (except Allies on CP, OW and Lustrian teams).
