November 2, 2004: FANATIC IS EVOLVING!

Fanatic support for the Specialist Game Range will be moving primarily online in the New Year. Work has already started on an exciting new Fanatic web and community site, and we will be announcing the precise launch date for the new site in the coming weeks. This is an exciting time for Fanatic, and will enable us to concentrate our resources on supporting the existing Specialist Games community via the web.

As part of this process Fanatic and the main Games Workshop Studio are being reorganised into a single integrated team. Over the last five years the Fanatic studio has taken the Specialist Games Range a long way, and I think we’ve done an excellent job of working with the online communities that have grown up around the Specialist Games Range. However, by bringing support for the Specialist Range into the main Studio and taking Fanatic online we will be able to greatly improve the quality of the support that we provide.

I’ll be staying on as Head Fanatic along with some of the members of the existing Fanatic team. Other members of the team will be going off to join other departments and do new jobs. I hope that you will join with me in wishing them well in the future. I know that they will do Fanatic proud!

What won’t be changing is Games Workshop’s commitment to provide ongoing support for all seven Specialist Game systems. All of the games and miniatures will remain available through Games Workshops Direct Sales operations and Online Stores, and we will also continue to bring out new releases, though we do plan to reduce the sheer quantity of new models that we make so that we concentrate on improving the online support that we provide. Even so we have some great new releases coming up over the next few months, highlights of which include the Swordwind supplement and Eldar army for Epic, and the fabulous new Battle of Five Armies game by Rick ‘Warmaster’ Priestley.

If you have any thoughts, comments or feedback about this evolution in the way that Fanatic is going to be providing support for the Specialist Games Range, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. I can be reached by email at jervis@games-workshop.co.uk. Although I can’t promise to reply to all the emails I receive, I do read all of the correspondence I receive and I would love to hear from you.

Best regards,

Jervis Johnson
Head Fanatic

What do people think of this? To be frank im not happy, less minis is the main problem i have...

Im tempted to encourage the online community to heckle GW to make better support for bloodbowl! But... i wont for the minute!

Looks like an attempt to make a cut in support sound like a good thing.

If they remove the mini support, what else is there?

To justify it by saying they'll concentrate on 'online support' is nonsense since we have all the online support we need already.

A sad day for BB...

Less staff....same commitment?

Sounds like utter poop to me.

and if this fanatic online thing takes the same format as the vault were all doomed.

Democracy by the loudness of your voice. Rolling Eyes

This was my reply to the news on www.bloodbowl.com

Quote:
This post was originally going to be 2 or 3 lines long but I am infuriated. I am rather disheartened as I write this…

This news is utterly diabolical… If Thads is right then the wrong people are in the powerful places making all the important decisions. IMHO Bloodbowl is GW’s best game, tactically diverse, it can be played over an acceptable period of time and doesn’t depend on “I rolled more 6’s than you did” mechanism of WFB and 40K (which has kept me away from those games). The fact that GW stores these days seem to be populated by 12 year old kids, shouting and screaming like the vacillating (I recently learned that word and wanted to use it!) mob they are, is rather offputting and creates a childish/uncool image similar to McDonalds restaurants. When I go into a GW store I cannot hear myself think and can’t even see a BB mini. I feel like an unwanted old man as the staff stalk the young prey… and im only 22… it isn’t often I can go into a crowded shop and be able to see over the heads of everybody else!

I say this without hesitation, it saddens me to think that BB is dying a slow death, we had the news of a bright future what with the vault (some will disagree with me here!) and new minis for the teams in the pipeline, but now I feel this will be taken away from us in a short period of time, maybe this announcement is the first nail in the coffin?

If we are to save this game that we love, playing, painting and meeting friends over we have to tell the imbeciles running the show what we think. There are around 20,000 coaches playing BB on the net, granted a good proportion of them have never played TT before, and there are 2846 or so members on TBB, every one a dedicated fan. What I would like to see done if at all possible, anything would be better than nothing, we are the poor men of the GW range:

1) Cheaper minis or better quality minis, I don’t mind paying more for good quality but I don’t want to a lot more than I already have to for minis that have been around for longer than most of their current clientelle. If they don’t make new minis or reduce prices I just go onto ebay and get them for 50-75% of the price and that is money that GW do not see. As the current minis are unsuitable, many people make teams out of WFB minis, so Fanatic don’t see any money as gamers want to make an authentic team, and so drive WFB sales (as Grum said earlier)

2) Part of the reason BB isn’t making money is because it isn’t very well advertised! Scores of gamers playing WFB have never even heard of BB! I asked the local hobby/mini shop about bloodbowl and he asked me what it was… if nobody knows about it how will anyone want to buy it? Surely it is not unlike record companys who shamelessly advertise their main band (some boy/girl group tripe, akin to WFB) while the good and talented bands (Bloodbowl) don’t get a chance as the record companies will make more money out of the kids than the older folk.

3) Make it more appealing to new players. The current set of minis in the box are unacceptable yet understandable if you consider the GW mentality, they probably feel they will sell more teams as folk will want to buy metal teams… I wouldn’t mind paying more for a better, more attractive boxset that had a decent pitch, decent teams, decent rulebook and decent support, (remember the rules review last year, it was delayed AFAIK, but im not pointing fingers at the BBRC, they do a magnificent job and I know everyone here would support my view).

To be blunt, GW are ramshackle with regard to their business. It pains me to see an extraordinary game go unrewarded by the unsympathetic obsessed vultures that “run” GW

Save our game while we can, start a topic where we can tell GW what WE want, as WE are the ones keeping them in their BMW’s by buying their minis. I’d rather not play bloodbowl at all if it was to sink into oblivion, yes I can play with my friends but with less and less acknowledgement it becomes less appealing to play…

Sad

that doesnt even cover the tip of the iceberg...

as for mini prices, they only really shot up when they started using this white metal bullsh!t, put it back to lead and make gamers happy.
