Sounds like you're one of the fun dads.
I will always remember my dad taking me out of school when Half-Life 2 came out and playing with me all day. I bet a decade from now your kids will remember being pulled out and getting to play hookie and see star wars.

I can't even begin to fathom how anyone can be excited for this after three crappy prequels, two crappy Ewok movies, and one crappy cartoon movie about Jabba's kid. There hasn't been a good Star Wars movie since 1983 and I don't know what makes people think that Disney and JJ Abrams are going to make this one good. It's like, no matter how many times Star Wars slaps it's fans in the face, they keep going back for more. I, for one, quit this abusive relationship a decade ago and am never going back. I have no plans to watch it and can only step back and look at all the people crying their eyes out at the trailer and wetting their pants in excitement for this new one in perplexed befuddlement. I have no doubt that if this ends up being the worst movie ever made, it'll still make a billion dollars and every person that whines about how awful it is will be lined up at midnight the day the next one comes out (in a year) and then the next one and the next one. I don't get it. I don't get it at all.

The trailer looks impressive. But will it be grimdark enough for post GoT teens?
I think that Captain Phasma is gonna have to massacre a load of younglings and Rey will need to get her kit off.

The cast, the trailers, the ComicCon footage, the interviews, the way in which everything so far known about this movie screams "dear fans of the original trilogy who hated every bit of the prequels, this one's for you, this one will make it up to you we swear"? (NB, that's not yet to say it will, but it's very obviously the intention.)

Disney? Did Pirates of the Caribean (the first one). JJ Abrams? Did Star Trek: Into Darkness. If The Force Awakens is anything like either of those I'm going to be a happy critter. Plus. Name one bad movie Harrison Ford was in. I can't think of any.

I listen to Hollywood Babble-On which is a podcast with Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma, etc. Director). He is a massive geek. He was invited to the set by JJ and assures all that it is going to be kick ass. If you don't listen to it, it's really funny. I can't wait. But as Head Teacher Bill...taking your kids out of school to watch Star Wars??? I fully support that decision :D

The #1 thing I can say that makes me look foward is when the Star Trek movie came out, the biggest complaint people had was.

"He turned Star Trek into Star Wars!" and that movie kicked ass, so yeah, this should be good.

and these last star trek movies with young spock and kirk were horrible.
and the last star wars prequel movies were catastrophies.

I grew up on Star Wars too, but then a funny thing happened.

At some point I became older and wiser and realized what an utter pile of shit it all was.

Enjoy it if you can, I'm already tapped out. For what it's worth, this is reminding me of Independence Day for some reason. So Arktoris is right, it will be awesome and suck.

MisterFurious is right. And JJ Abrams will not do the prequel franchise justice, if Into Darkness is any indication. It will be a spectacle and critically acclaimed, but I expect to be disappointed. (I will see it though, unlike episodes II and III, which I will never see.)

Having said that, kids will love it and it's a great thing you're doing, BB!

Just to clear up any ambiguity because there were some people here that said SW is all bad or all good, I'll explain it to you:
The old movies are all good, the new movies are all bad. It has nothing to do with your age. If you disagree, the problem is with you, not the movie.

The new movie could be good or could be bad. But recent history of the franchise doesn't instill hope. I still couldn't help myself and bought tickets.

I saw a trailer for the new star wars. My prediction is it will be underwhelming. It seems to have gone in the opposite direction of JaJa Binks (a good thing so far of course) but to the point iy is taking itself far too seriously. A bit like the new Superman movie. This will be a bad thing.
