No throwers on Darkelves?
In a recent Ulthuan Qualifier match, a discussion broke out about the usefulness of throwers on a darkelf team. As usual with these in game discussions they tend to be a bit more heated than necessary, so perhaps the forum is a better place to discuss things.

Anyway, as we were discussing the pros and cons of throwers, real life interrupted me, so I had to leave. However, the last line I saw essentially was "All good darkelf teams with a winning record - meaning not yours - have throwers."

So I had a look to see whether this is true. To the best of my knowledge there are 26 dark elf teams in ranked with 100+ games. The breakdown is as follows:

Winning record with throwers: 22
Losing record with throwers: 2
Winning record without throwers: 2
Losing record without throwers: 0

Unfortunately there are too few teams with the approach of not having throwers on the roster to gauge the effectiveness of the approach. In any case, the ratio of 22 / 2 is pretty hard to top, so the validity of a thrower approach has already been proven.

I am quite surprised though, that it is accepted wisdom to forego witches (7 of the 26 teams didn't have witchelves), but building dark elf teams without throwers still appears to be a minority position.

In a way, that's good, because that helps my team to stick out and be unique. Unlike that in game claim, the fazing fiends do have more wins than losses, so it's even working quite well, especially considering that I value a crowd push higher than a win.

The other team was the blood red dragons and they probably only lack the throwers due to a shortage in cash.

Anyway, since I play the darkelves as nimble bashers and usually go for the conventional 2-1 stall victory, I don't see much use for a thrower. I just wanted to set the record straight about the no winning record claim. Also, I had hoped to get different findings - colour me surprised that witches are more loathed than throwers.

Hmmm, now I really don't have a topic for debate anymore, so I'll change this into a blog entry instead.
