Getting grumpier and not liking it
I find myself getting more bitter about some of my games of late where Nuffle won't seem to cut me a break.
I find myself looking on in envy at some opponents dice, and even some of the games I spectate.
I've started thinking "am I actually getting worse at Blood Bowl?" if indeed, as many would smugly point out, didn't think was possible!
I'm starting to worry that I'm turning into the whinging moaning coach I so hate playing against.
I'm wondering, is it the dark and cold winter nights and I'm already missing the summer?
Is it that I'm 40 next year? Or that they haven't found a cure for baldness yet?
Perhaps I've really started to feel the aches and pains after playing sport whereas I didn't really used to?
Is it the pressures of work?, or the ever present gloom of wishing you had more money than I've got?
Maybe it's the continued onslaught of "isn't this a crappy world we live in" news stories I keep seeing that is making me lose what little faith I had in humanity?

I need cheering up. I need something to raise my spirits and improve my outlook so I don't turn into that grumpy git I fear that I am becoming.

What do you all do when you feel a bit down in the dumps?

I just accept that there is a lot of luck involved in this game, and I like to look at it as "I'm coaching these guys, I can only give them the play and hope for the best."

Sh*t happens. I've started to realize that it's much more amusing and exciting to play when you consider yourself, the coach, a spectator of the game too.

Create a new team and go at it again! You can't do anything about the dice but you can do a lot about how you take it.

As that famous quote says; Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional!

I stopped playing meaningless R and B games.

So I stopped playing R and B entirely ;)

Play more Stunty, join SPLAT, revel in the deaths of your players as you rack up the bonus points.

Sorry, You are not going to get a game against me every week.
Remember it could always be worse :)

Somebody (Russo I think) had a good blog a few months back about playing Blood Bowl when you are already dealing with a lot. I think this might be what is happening with you. A short break could help, or finding another activity to pick you up while your dice are down. This is a fun game, but it won't fix the world, lack of money, getting older, sports injuries or baldness.

Metaphysically, you create your own reality. Force yourself to smile when things go shitty. Seriously. Make yourself smile. Smile and smile some more. Eventually you will start to wonder why you are smiling despite the horrid horrid circumstances you are in. And some time after that, if you continue smiling... you won't care :) Because you'll be happy. And you'll know that everyone has crappy days and crappy things happen to everyone. The happiest of us know that we just need to take turns getting crapped on every once in a while.

Here are two things that help me.

1. Yell at the players, like a real coach. Role play it up. It can be very amusing to joke about the failures of your players if you do it with the right perspective.

2. Cut back. If I play half as many games as I usually do then I find I can enjoy what I do play more. Not working? Cut it in half again. Enough time in between helps when it feels like you hit a multi-game streak of the craps. You can always step it back up when your mood improves.

I used to get riled up about dice luck on here too. Then I spectated a bunch of Paul Hicks matches back in the glorious fouling days of LRB4 (his DP leaping troll was a thing of beauty), and saw his infamous comment that if the worst thing in your day is a few of your pixels die, then life is pretty good. Ok, so I paraphrased badly there, but the sentiment was right.

Now if I feel fed up with the game I make silly teams and play for fun, like flings, or my current favourite - an all zombie roster. Even a draw feels like a win, and as its a fun team and you've thrown optimum builds out the window you start to remember just how much fun the game can be. This worked for me, just find what works for you.

Plus, my girlfriend is 8 years younger than me and really really hot. That helps too :D

I agree with the cutback or take a break theory. If you aren't enjoying it, you shouldn't play so much. It'll only damage your long term opinion of here.

I take back my comment on smiling. Get a hot girlfriend that's 8 years younger than you and still likes you even if you play online board games. Smiling is for dorks.

Believe me or not I have actually made friends during my time on Fumbbl.

When I am down I cry on there shoulder just as I try and lend them a shoulder when they start sobbing.

Having friends that will lisen to your moans in a private channel saves both you and your opponent a lot of grief.
My online friends help carry me thru the rough patches of Fumbbl.

Thank you friends.

I achieve what jeffro talks about by playing with gobbos. You laugh when they fail and do cartwheels when they succeed. An extension of what akaRenton is talking about too. Plus, you can't take it too seriously.... :)

Play some AC/DC. Never fails.

I'm having a shit time in real life at the moment. I have decided to shut myself away, drink alcohol and generally feel sorry for myself.
Posted by Verminardo on 2013-11-09 13:29:37
There is actually a cure to baldness but you have to take the medicine before you lose all the hair, as I recently found out. Too bad. But maybe it's for the best to save ourselves the money and our body the unrequired drugging. ;)

I was going to suggest beer and/or taking a break, but AC/DC is a pretty good idea, too. :)

@Royston [:( Hope you spark the flames of happiness soon] - & @ryanfitz
I believe this applies: "Drink never solves anything, and just leaves you with a headache, a bad taste in your mouth, and less money in your pocket".

@ paradocks - I have two cats... ironically, I'm allergic... which we found out AFTER we got them... they are still lovely though.

@FTJUK - Not sure about AC/DC, but I certainly put on some Aerosmith which does the same thing :)

@everyone mentioning taking a break - Nah, then I would be miserable AND bored... I just wondered how everyone cheered themselves up.

@licker & xnoelx and anyone else recommending Stunty... I've made a team, and played my first Stunty game in years today against a fun opponent. I lucked my way to a win through the help of stars... Must admit, quite enjoyed it... but felt they should fail more than they did! Not sure about SPLAT yet... will think about it afte a few more Stunty games... see if I catch the bug again.

Thanks everyone!

There is always worse. Yesterday I played badly. I thought it was bad dice, but it was bad coaching. I watched my replays, and it is evident it was me. For example I mishandled a drive when I rolled blitz, and it was solely on me. Then I cheered up being 0-1 at halftime, settle down, and played one of my best bbowl, and won 2-1 in a really bad matchup.

Extra point: When I thought my game is bad, then my son destroyed a plug, and made the house dangerous. So remember, there is always worse...

Posted by Beerox on 2013-11-10 02:40:40
You have 2700 games played!

Me giving you advice would be like me telling my grandma how to deal with hardships in life.

But my quick answer would be to say that baldness rules, and I can't wait for it to happen to me. I'm gonna go with the Hulk Hogan style.
