Wasteland 2
I am a gamer of the ‘golden’ era. Back in the late 80’s RPG’s were about the writing and setting, rather than the graphics and combos. If you remember Fallout 2, keep reading. If you played Fallout 1 it is even more exciting. If, like me, you actually remember Wasteland you may actually do a little love wee.

The original designer of Wasteland is making the sequel. For those that don’t know, Wasteland was the fore-runner to the Fallout series. (in fact the same guy also did the first and second fallout games! He didn’t own the rights to Wasteland, so he had to change the name for them). Wasteland is/was a top down team based post apocalyptic RPG, and wasteland 2 will probably be the same.

The game is being funded by kickstart. Again for those that don’t know this means that the fans pre-order the game at various funding levels, and if the project gets enough funding it goes ahead. The optimistic target for Wasteland was $900,000. It hit it within the first week. It now stands at over $1.8m. if the project reaches $2.1m within the next 2 weeks Obsidian will also come on board to help develop the game.

Here is a quote from a recent interview to give you an idea of the direction this game will be taking.

MF: There seem to be two halves of the gaming universe. Old guys like me who grew up on Fallout. I remember pouring over decisions and redoing combat, just because an NPC died. I loved that dog too much to let him go. The other half, though, are much younger. Their first introduction to the universe was Fallout 3 and New Vegas. How are they going to be able to relate to this game having no real frame of reference for these classic, wonderful RPGs?

BF: The thing about this project being fan-funded is that I’m not worried about this new group of people and how they might get it. This is being made for people like yourself that grew up playing Wasteland, Fallout and Fallout 2. These new people, who have never played these games, I think they’re going to check it out and have a great time. I’m simply not going to worry about how I get these console guys to come over and like it, because there is no reason to. We all know the experience that we grew up with. We all loved it and we’ve all been wanting one, so that’s what I’m going to bring. It’s not a putdown on the console product, it’s just that I’m not going to worry about how to get them.

So this will be a game for us old timers. Since the game has already been funded by us they have no reason to worry that it will be too niche to sell. They know it is the game we want.

Anyway head on over to http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2 and give it a bit of a look. For only $15 you can help get this game made and receive a copy when it does.

For an old Wasteland and Fallout fan like me (see my teams...) that's the only thing that can keep me away from FUMBBL!

Let's hope it will not be vaporware!

The actual website is

It is very unlikely to be vapourware. I would guess the complany wants to make a comeback, and this will be thier flagship.

BTW, for old gamers like us, I think Age of Decadence is a really nice indie game in beta stage!

I can remember playing this game when I was pretty young. I still remember URABUTLN. I can also remember that I spent a lot of time trying to get thru a farm.

Fallout 1 and 2 were... probably are still two of my favourite ever RPGs. Didnt know abuot wasteland tbh. But this sounds great :)

Just checked it. Sooo..

They are basically putting together the creators of the best RPGs Ive ever played?
Including Planescape Torment´s Chris Avellon?
Especifically for us, old-time RPG gamers, and fu** off those console kids?

YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!

You, Sir, made my day.

Yep, that is pretty much it in a nutshell.

The team that made Planscape, Baldurs gate 1 & 2, the Fallout games, Icewind Dale etc. want to make another old school RPG that has no 'dumbing down' for the console generation. Made for the fans, funded by the fans. I just loved the idea that they don't even care if newer gamers don't get it. They have no problems making the game rich and complicated. They just want the game to be rewarding and fun. And all this for less than the price of a couple of tickets to the cinema.

My introduction to tabletop RPGs was D&D 1st ed.
My introduction to computerized RPGs was Adventure

I like naming my own characters, rolling stats for them, and having a "paper doll" type interface for gear (or even just 3-4 "slots" for a few standard gear types, with no graphical representation as to where they go).

I like turn-based inputs over real-time inputs, and real-time is better than first-person point'n'click.

Am I the "right" amount of old school for this? Am I TOO old school for this?

(if someone makes a new FFTactics for PC, I would be quite happy)

The game will be turn based.

It most likely will have paper dolls.

The combat will be remeniscent of Fallout Tactics.

You are probably at the exact level of Old School.

Oh, and as a side note you can split your party up around the map so that you can achieve multiple goals at the same time, or co-ordinate a flanking manuveur.

Oh this is going to be awesome.

Do you guys remember "Stupid Runs" in Fallout 1 & 2? Especially in 2 were they worked pretty well? The conversations with other dumb characters? :D
