Chaos Dwarf Blog part 3
This past few weeks have been largely devoted to the Chaos Dwarfs, it took me ages to get the red how I wanted it and this involved the use of glazes and washes so I didn’t want to forget the technique and have to try and match it.

I have completed the rest of the hobgoblins, their skin ended up slightly lighter but I didn’t see this as a bad thing since it’s another way to differentiate the 3 very similar pairs of hobgoblins. There are 2 unique models who would both work as ball carrier, I usually like to make a player stand out as captain. Of course that works best when all the players are of the same race so I have done a “real” team captain who is a blocker.

Speaking of which the Blockers are all done too. The red on them ended up slightly darker and glossier than the hobgobos, but I think that is a good thing as it works better with their colour scheme. I had originally gone for a lighter, matt red but it just looked too flat and pastel. I started with a batch of 4 and as the red is so laborious to do I ended up painting each dwarf individually.

This was not as efficient as I wanted and made it hard to keep the colour scheme consistent so for the 2nd batch I did the red parts individually and then painted all the other colours at the same time. This batch had both the clawed mutants and the team captain, he will be stuck in the middle of the action yelling out orders to the rest of his team. So to show this he has a pointing finger and a grey beard to mark his veteran status.

I’ll be turning my attention to the Bull centaurs and lizardmen next, I’d like to get the 6 saurus, krox and bulls done in the next 4 weeks if possible. Then I can focus on the Minotaur and lizardmen star players.

My ideas for the vampire Lahmian team are progressing as well. I have my eye on a 2nd set of the coven throne vampires and plan on combining them with either 1 or 2 of the female witch hunter inquisitors. Also the aristocratic vamp with a lot of conversion. I do need to find suitable legs for the vamp bodies and possibly arms too. Whilst I think they should look elaborate and graceful I still want them to look like Bloodbowl players rather than attendees to a fancy vampire ball.

I think I have found the ideal models to use for the thralls. I wanted them to be female, gothic but clearly of a lesser station as the vamps. With a bit of work the sisters repentia will fit the bill. I will need to remove the chainsaws, reposition their arms and add some shoulder pads but otherwise they have the look I want.

I’m still debating which stars to do, 6 is a lot and I really want them to fit the theme.

Helmut Wulf – The death cult assassin with a repentia eviscerator will be perfect, as I see her a an AV8 thrall. Maybe adding a Jason style hockey mask from the redemptionists.

Crazy Igor – He is the other key vampire star but like most of those added in lrb5 we don’t have much info on him. I seem to remember he’s supposed to be a chaos marauder, but with the name change is he meant to be the classic hunchback igor? Either way I’m struggling to think of a suitable look to fit my team. Any suggestions?

J Earlice – I love the ghoul king model so much I have to do something with him. As I said in my last blog he’s almost too cool to be used as such a lame star but would be easy to convert by adding shoulder pads and giving him a more catching pose.

Wilhelm Cheney – I do really like the old 2nd edition model, but maybe I should try and convert a female were?

Count Luthor – Isabella Von carstein

Morg – He’s the star usable by the most teams but the original model is a bit old fashioned. Also I am not entirely convinced he suits the team.
I am considering using a Vargheist with the arms from a Crypt Ghoul. Those are large devolved vampires so would be appropriate and could even be modelled in the Morg pose.

If I was making a Crazy Igor, I'd probably start with the hunchback from the Mordheim Undead. There's also Malekev, from Necromunda. He's fully robed with a book on his back, so not my first choice, but I guess that depends if you think he fits the look of your team.

These are great minis. Both Hobos and Dorfs look spot on. Doesn't make CD any less lame a roster though :)
