The Orc team is finally nearing completion, I have finished everything bar Urgoth, Ripper and the troll.
I debated whether the throwers should have shoulder pads or not, they are AV8 so I wanted them to look it. That’s not easy when the linemen and blitzers have little armour themselves. But I couldn’t see them going into play without any protection so gave them more elaborate and tribal tattoos, seemed appropriate as they are made from shaman models.
The conversions were pretty simple, a hand swap with a plastic orc thrower for 1 and the other is made from a normal plastic savage orc body with Wazzag’s head and arm and a hand from a boar boy drummer. I had to do a fair bit of greenstuff sculpting to replace the shoulder on the arm I had cut off.
As an extra differentiator I again gave them furs and loin cloths the colour of their position, in this case white for throwers.
Varag uses the Willy miniatures version as the GW ones are not very good or a match for the team. His fist spike was a bit wobbly and high tech so I replaced it with a stone knife, more in keeping with the theme. Since he is a star I left him with the higher tech equipment, however he didn’t entirely escape being influenced by his less technologically advanced cousins. Being a bit of a show off and all round flashy git I thought he’d suit a slightly more elaborate tribal tattoo. So i searched for the kind of tattoo you’d see on bodybuilders or sports stars as opposed to the more traditional ones I did on the throwers and cruder versions on the other players.
Since he’s a blitzer I kept to the old skool colour theme and gave him red shorts along with yellow armour to fit in with the rest of the team.
I have completed the Goblin star players as well.
Bomber and the squigs were painted separately as they would have blocked each other off too much. I think squigs look best with red skin so used that as my main colour, but wanted a 2nd squig and being a hairy little blighter he had virtually no skin on show. So he ended up as an albino, which made him stand out more. Bomber's shoulder pad and loin cloth are yellow like the normal gobbos as were the feathers. Even goblin stars are too weedy for tattoos so I left him without.
For Scrappa I thought he looked too much like a night goblin and not enough like a Bloodbowl player so chopped his legs off and replaced them with bare ones, gave him a gauntlet since I couldn’t fit a shoulder pad on without cutting his ear off and added a feathered headdress. His midriff was painted green as well when it could have been done as cloth.
The squig was a bit unstable so I had to take it off the tab and pin him to the base and weigh it down with a coin. This squig also got painted red as it is a good contrast to the yellow and green rider.
It’s a shame that the only plastic goblin on foot GW does come from the big spider kit as i’d have liked to do a team of them.
Urgoth is coming along nicely and I hope to complete him by the end of the year. He has a special Savage Orc equivalent to a chainsaw that I feel is quite appropriate.
The Trolls will be quite simple since Ripper is a star and the normal troll is already pretty backward so they should be quite quick to paint.
I have flocked all the bases, painted the edges black and added numbers, coloured by position. I will probably re-take photos once the whole team is done along with a team shot.
