If we still used DOS and 320x200 resolution
This is about how our client might look like:

Damn those dorfs, they're everywhere!
Posted by Ehlers on 2013-08-13 18:05:54
Would still be better than Cyanide Blood Bowl.

Great blog. Did DOS also make us dumber? Why so many players on the LOS from BOTH teams, lol.
Posted by Jeffro on 2013-08-13 19:01:50
Winner :D

A blog to brighten everyone's day... thank you so much :)

How many times can I rate this six?
Posted by baelnic on 2013-08-13 19:16:33
But what teams are those? I think Red is Chaos Dwarfs with a White Minotaur. That'd make blue Humans with all Lino's and an Ogre.
Posted by pythrr on 2013-08-13 19:23:38
I would buy this game!
Posted by Cavetroll on 2013-08-13 19:42:20
Red is clearly Batman, Robin and an Ogre. Blue looks like dwarves with a Flesh Golem.
Posted by birdbanger on 2013-08-13 19:42:38
Thanks. Comments made me laugh :)

I might try to code this into a playable game.

This is so many ways of awesome! I'd love to do a version at this resolution. The biggest square size manageable would be 12x12, or 144 pixels, compared to 30x30 and 900 pixels. That is, only 16% pixels by comparison.

And only 256 colours of course. :D

Here is a 12x12 Human blitzer, blown up to show what he would look like with big pixels.

@WhatBall

I got the idea to try this layout, when I tried the Microleague's Dos version of bb. It does not show the whole pitch and you must "zoom and pan" it just like in Cyanide to see different parts of the play area. The gameplay is horrible.

Then I thought why did they not do it like here and try how it would look like on 320x200 res.

I went with 10x10 pixel squares. I think 11x11 would be also possible but then you had less place for other graphics. The players can be slightly larger. That ogre there is probably 13 pixels tall.

And yes it would be interesting to see what you could do with those limitations. 320x200 and 256 colors :D At least more color could be used than I used on this.

Back in 90s when they just got away from this style graphics it would been probably hard to market games that looked like c-64 game :) I think that is the main reason why Microleague threw away the gameplay and tried to make fancy marketable graphics in it instead. Fun thing is, that pixels are starting to look good again now in 2010s :)

@Whatball

Haha nice :D

Its not easy with so few pixels. If I had to guess what it was I would have guessed that it was AD&D style hobgoblin or bug bear :D
Posted by pythrr on 2013-08-13 20:57:36
kickstarter it!

also, while we are on it. can one still play those AD&D games (Pool of Radiance) etc from teh good old days? Better still if I can do it on a MAC.
Posted by birdbanger on 2013-08-13 21:07:50
@pythrr

You can play them with DosBox. It emulates Dos. Thou you get better sound and graphics if you get Amiga emulator and play the Amiga versions. But it is harder to do and needs more tech skills...

Steam and GOG even sells some of those old games ready tweaked to work with DosBox. I bought the old X-Com games couple of years ago. Turn based tactical combat and strategy. I can recommend to anyone who likes bb.

MAC? I dont know anything about MAC :)

Lovely job.
Posted by f_alk on 2013-08-13 23:24:23
@pythrr: You can also find C=64 emulators, and lots of the old programs. ... if you prefer the DOS-Box, you can still find many games on the abadonware sites.

The old X-com, so much better than the new X-com and much longer and more fun. Less snazzy images tho.

X-Com Enemy Unknown/UFO Defense: One of the greatest games ever.
Posted by JimmyFantastic on 2013-08-14 10:18:44
Shame on whoever didn't rate this a 6!
Is old X-com actually challenging? New one is super easy.
Posted by PurpleChest on 2013-08-14 11:31:12
you have to make the old xcom challenging by ignoring the psi and waypoint bomb options. And even then the answer is 'not really'

still the greatest game ever made.
Posted by Ehlers on 2013-08-14 13:02:51
Well if you are talking UFO, you have to bring in Syndicate (wars) too :D

Which by the way have been kick started and yes I have funded it. So you will be able to find my name in the game and you will be able to mind control me most likely

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZP6AlTh__E

And yes what is the good part here? That Mike Diskett the original director is behind this title! So nerdgasm? I think so!

Once you got far enough into the original X-Com, to the point where you had a squad of 25 soldiers, all of whom are wearing advance armor, some with flying suits, all equipped with Heavy Plasma weapons, and with enough missions behind them to have the stat improvements to make each member a formidable warrior in their own right, the challenge level did drop a bit. Unless you happened to luck out and have one of the three-story battle ships filled with Mutons just happen to land somewhere(often in the woods), and it was your mission to go clear out the spaceship and the surrounding area, room by room, floor by floor. The major difference I've seen between the new and old X-COM is the number of aliens you come up against in the missions. In the old X-COM it wasn't out of the question to be returning from a mission with 20-30 alien corpses to sell. There were enough enemies to warrant each squad member being issued an additional ammo clip, just in case. We all made the mistake of attempting to walk over to the Muton you just gunned down to take their weapon since yours was now empty, and walked into the line of vision of 3 additional Mutons. It would be a this point the Way-Point bomb PurpleChest mentioned would come in handy.

I believe I spent the entire Summer of '93 or '94 playing Syndicate. Just the intro to that game was enough to make it awesome.

I found the old XCOM very challenging and the new one is not so challenging yet(just started playing got 10 missions or so). But then I've never been super good at beating games.

I also find the old XCOM extremely scary when playing missions. Back in the day I sometimes kicked my computer so hard that it shut down when a plasma beam suddenly ripped the silence(and my poor soldier) apart. ;D

for the x-com lovers: try shadowrun returns. it's not that long, and it didn't seem particularly hard, but it's turnbased funky cyperpunking!

Fly already done!

i LOVE the old X-com! The new one is good as well. Want challenging, then crank up the difficulty. Gets insane.... any post that turns to x-com discussion is winning in my book!
