Last Season’s OBBA Cup Winners seemed like they were going to steam roller over the rest of the competition to retain their title, and a trail of broken bones they’d already left behind was a testament to that single minded attitude. There was only one team that stood in their way, the Premiership’s Real Sociedead!

Real contacted their familiar freebooter, the Count, who after spending most of the last game in this fixture in the CAS box had been preparing for the game by training with the Real Mummy defence partnership and had beefed up. Mummywell FC countered the signing by bringing along Tut, and the stage was set.

By slight of hand Real elected to kick off, their aim to remove the Skellies on the LOS first. The LOS however did not crumble before the blocks and so it was left to Mummy Bravo Munoz to show FC what a Real Mummy is capable of and blitzed him into non-regen land! Following this huge triumph Real hung back, confident that they could cause more damage!

Mummywell countered by picking on poor, feeble, Chris Glutton, foul specialist, and tearing down the other flank to gang foul a Wight - but in doing so left one of their flanks exposed... seemed like they had invited the Vampire to an early score.

Real however held back and the Muscle bound count blitzed in with the ball tucked in tight and toppled a Mummywell Mummy, just in time for Chris to leap to his feet and put the boot in, a move that did little but get him sent off.

Mummywell reformed and forced real to cage in the centre field. Tut charged ineffectually into the cage and Real seized their opportunity, as Castano blitzed him into the casualty box – a resounding cheer erupted in the Real stands and the count skipped to the end zone.

1 – 0

Second half, and Mummywell were angry! Eager Skeletons with blood and sinew mattered boots took the place of the Mummies and they were ready to win Real by sheer numerical advantage.

Despite Mummywell bungling their drive after the coach spurred his Mummy on to attack again despite fatigued, Real played conservatively, a costly move after some of their speedier players were removed from the field, seriously injured Wight and Ghoul and another KO’d Wight, meant only the Count could catch the endzone bound Blitz-Ra, and all he could offer was to tie him up.

The Blitz-Ra skipped away from the Count and scored.

1 – 1

A full quarter left to tie the game and Mummywell got at the referee… they were going down fighting! Real feigned to one flank, then quickly turned on a burst of Zombie speed to the other. Mummywell Scampered to the opposite flank and it was down to a crippled Skeleton to block the path… and he did just that.

With seconds left the count had to move the skeleton from the path of Necati Ates, then it was down to the sole Ghoul to dodge from his marker and sprint to the finish, Real didn’t have the men to go to OT, this was it!

The Count merely pushed the Skeleton aside, but it was enough. Necati dislodged himself from the Khemri Throw-Ra and sprinted to the finish line, launching himself into the endzone as the final whistle blew… Real had done it!!!

2 – 1

The cost was high, but there is no price to be placed on glory and defeating your most deadly of rivals! Knowing that they were the ones to put Mummywell out and advance to the Semi-Finals is worth a Wight and Ghoul’s career… they can retire knowing they did their part!

This was a very tough game with some four minute turns. I certainly got the luck with the Two non regen Mummy CAS but several double skulls early in turns left me playing very conservative for the remainder of them – such as on one occasion when frustration got the better of Grit and he rerolled a pushback block and turned up double skulls I could have sacked his ball carrier and possibly ended the game were it not for double skulls leaving me to have to make GFIs without a RR, so I opted not to make the play.

Grit seized the opportunity and with some ag2 dodging got the tie. Mummywell GTR for the last quarter and with my numbers dwindling it didn’t look so easy and my remaining RR was expended quickly. Some more Khemri dodging, from an ag1 Skelly too, left me needing a 3+ 2+ 2+ - and thankfully the Ghoul did me proud!

Very tactical and enjoyable game, my biggest mistake was not realising his Mummy had tackle and getting my ag4 Ghoul niggled. :(

VGG Grit, tough as always.
