#3 Wang Fu – Pinched Nerve (MNG)
#6 The Duchess – Dead (RIP)
  1. A.P.E. League, Season 1, King of the Jungle Rd 1

Not quite your typical 2-1 win...

It was a battle of Guard v. Block, as the Guard-heavy #1 seed A-Z took on the #4 seed CHUMP in the semi's of the first King of the Jungle tourney.

CHUMP won the toss and chose to receive, and a Riot shortened the 1st Half by a Turn. CHUMP pushed cautiously up one side, then Turn 5 went for a Ballcarrier Blitz-dodge for the score - the Blitz took the RR, and the dodge failed, ball on the ground. But, while until Turn 5 the casualties had been close (1 CHUMP Orangutan BH'd, 2 A-Z Lino's KO'd), before that fail 2 A-Z players had been SI'd, a Chimp MNG and a Guard lino -Ag'd, leaving 7 A-Z players vs. 10 to capitalize on the situation. They recoevered, but double-skullled a RR'd 1d Block on the only threat, leaving the Blitz wide open. That found a Pow thru RR, and recovered. An early double-Both Down ate the A-Z RR, and the 1d Blitz on the ballcarrier could only find a Pow to end Turn 6. Turn 7 CHUMP chose not to stall and just take the points, 1-0.

On the Turn 7 kickoff A-Z sent 2 players into scoring range - one was knocked down, and the other double-marked and isolated. A-Z tried a pass - intercepted, half over, CHUMP leading 1-0.

2nd half A-Z received, 11 players v. 11, and right off BH'd a Blocker but got their -MA gimp lino banned on a failed Foul. Turn 2 Chump turned on the pressure, chainpushing the ballcarrier out of the cage and flooding to him, and Turn 3, after suffereing their Guard Chimp KO'd and a Gorilla MNG'd, still had a 1d Blitz on the Ballcarrier - Push RR'd to Skull, Stun on the blitzer. A-Z's 10 players quickly recovered position, and answered a KO'd lino by RIP'ing a rookie Orangutan Turn 5, 9 playes v. 7, and up a Gorilla. CHUMP still tried to keep up the pressure, but A-Z answered every time and slipped away to safety, delaying for the Turn 8 tying score, 1-1, and saving 1 RR for OT, as had CHUMP.

Altho' some good wake-up rolls gave CHUMP 8 players, just enough for an odds-against OTS try, things looked bleak for Overtime - 1 Gorilla and 2 Orangutans out, plus one Block Lino KO'd, facing 9 (inc. 4 Gorillas) plus a Leader KO'd. If the OTS did not work, the odds would be against them, no matter who won the coin toss.

However another Riot changed that whole plan! Some lucky LOS blocks broke enough linemen free to push 3 up to scoring position in a loose screen formation, the MA 8 Chimp on the 8 behind two Blockers on the 7, and the deep kick had been recovered on the 2. A-Z's Blitz found only a Push (saving their RR for OT), and they fell back into a 6-man double-deep defense. The CHUMP 2D blitz found a knockdown on the defending Gorilla, and they made a 2+ GFI for the 3+ Pass, the 2+ Catch, and the 2+ Handoff to get the ball into the scorer's hands, who then swung wide and made both GFI's for the T16 winning score (about a 33% play!).

(7 of CHUMP's 18 spp were taken to the grave by The Duchess, making the victory not quite pyrrhic, but still bittersweet.)

#6 Woestina Willie – Fractured Arm (MNG)
#10 Buster – Broken Neck (-AG)
First Simyin mirror match, and what a match! Pretty intense in both halves.

First half, solid Chump offense, but after some pressuring the ball carrier failed a non-RR 3+ dodge and let the ball loose despite having 3 more players on the field. A-Z recovered the ball and headed forward, but a 1/9 chance of failure came biting them in the ass and Chump got the ball back and scored. A-Z failed the 2 turn TD attempt, so 1-0 for Chump at half time.

In the second half A-Z had always a slight man advantage, but the pressure was high, including taking risky 3+ rolls with the ball carrier. Overall not too happy with how I played that offense, I think I got pretty lucky. Scored in turn 8, so 1-1.

And when we thought that overtime would decide the winner (with A-Z slightly outnumbering Chump), riot came! Chump caged forward in the middle of A-Z's field, protecting their MA8 chimp. Next turn, unsuccesful blitz and a couple of guys left on the ground to avoid being hit, and Chump knocked down a gorilla and was able to pull a 2+ 3+ 2+ 2+ 2+ 2+ for the final TD (who said extra arms was useless? :P). Well done! And congrats to Smeat for his very solid coaching.
