#9 Alandrian – Dead (RIP)
CIBBL - Y8, Spring - Athel Loren: round 2:

After last game’s victory Timaris Stormwing, the manic-depressive head coach of the Meddlers, was in an excellent mood. Excitedly he was admiring the collection of curious tokens he’d collected over the past years as trophies. Spread out over the massive wooden table were the feather of a hobgoblin’s hat, a twig from a fallen treeman, the hoof of a fallen zoat, a piece of the mask of an injured elf and many more mysterious items. “Quite the collection you’ve got there, boss” Mereia, the Meddlers assistant coach, offered out of nowhere. An astonished Timaris turned around, while fruitlessly trying to cover the table’s content with his wide sleeves. He admired Mereia for her cool and calm nature, but strongly disapproved of her talent for showing up unnoticed and unwanted. “What’s it all for anyway?”, Mereia continued, while taking a seat at the table, without waiting for an invitation. “Ahum, nothing really”, Timaris replied. He didn’t appreciate Mereia’s presence in his private quarters, but couldn’t send her out without raising suspicion. “It’s just a heap of worthless trinkets, really”, he lied. “Memories from the past for a nostalgic mind like my own”, he continued. In reality, they were ingredients for a secret ritual, but Mereia didn’t have any business with that. In any case, several crucial components were still missing. “If you say so”, Mereia replied, producing an apple from her pocket and biting a large chunk out of it. “Anyway, I only wanted to make sure you didn’t forget about tonight’s game”, she said while getting herself up. As she moved towards the door she launched her half-eaten apple backwards without turning around. “Here’s another piece for your collection”, the woman elf added while leaving the room. All a dumbstruck Timaris could do was catch the apple and look somehow foolish.

Several hours later Timaris arrived in the stadium and installed himself in the center of the Meddlers’ bench. Mereia, who had guided the team during warm-up, was already seated in her favorite corner. As usual she wore her tank top and shades, completed with a cap and black, leather fingerless gloves. A glass of martini, filled to the rim, completed her outfit. “Got something to celebrate?”, Timaris addressed his assistant. “Might as well start early rejoicing tonight’s win, no?”, she replied. “Don’t see much threat on the field”, she added. Timaris disagreed but decided to remain quiet. The Meddlers faced the Crystal Mere Mystics – a zoat team – and they were loaded with inducements, including a Halfling master chef, a wizard, a wandering apothecary, a dirty player mercenary and two star players – Tom ‘bg’ Dilgn and Balor Mythradar – making Timaris more than a little nervous. Meanwhile on the pitch the referee blew his whistle, announcing the start of the game. The Meddlers lost the coin toss but somehow started receiving the ball. Aware of the wizard’s constant menace the wood elves cautiously advanced. Both sides tried to control the pitch and nothing much happened until Balor Mythradar blitzed Ethandril in turn four. The multi-legged mastodon charged forwards but somehow – and much to the fans’ delight – managed to knock himself down. This strengthened the wood elves’ resolve and Alandrian, Isilvar and Caelir managed to knock a zoat out, two of them for the remainder of the game. That was the sign for Mereia to adjust her cap backwards, finish her first glass and order a second one. She also signaled Aery, the Meddlers’ cheer leader, to start the victory dance. Outnumbered and outgunned, the zoats had to undergo the game until Hauclir ran in the opening touchdown in turn eight: 1-0 for the Meddlers! The spiteful zoats couldn't pull off a one-turner, and instead focused on putting the boot down on Alandrian, who paid with his life! Timaris was tempted to send in the apothecary, but Mereia disapproved and convinced him to let the line-elf go.

In the second half the wood elves lost their thrower Vanhir after another foul. On the upside the zoats failed to pick up the ball, allowing the Meddlers to advance and pressure the ball. Next turn the four-legged Cacca managed to recover the ball and even fled away towards something resembling a cage. Nevertheless, the zoats didn’t feel entirely safe and decided to send in their wizard who launched a mighty fireball onto the pitch. Both Caelir and Eldain were hit, but Ethandril – somersaulting through the air – miraculously escaped! When noticing the risk of the elves getting bogged down in a useless brawl they couldn’t win, Timaris signaled to Syrabeth that it was time to make her move. Somersaulting through the air like her brother Ethandril, the wardancer hit Cacca on the skull, freeing the ball. Next turn the zoats had a chance to recover, but Xoxo decided to mess up the turn by following Balor’s example from the first half. This left the Meddlers an excellent opportunity to steal the ball, which is exactly what Nimrodel did. The elves’ third wardancer leapt onto the ball, picked it up and graciously dodged out of the danger zone. In any case, that’s what he thought he did. But then Balor corrected his mistake from the first half by taking down Nimrodel and liberating the ball. Syrabeth had to intervene to save the day, which is exactly what she did. In the midst of the chaos she jumped onto the ball, nimbly picked it up, dodged out and finally lobbed the ball into the hands of Eldain, who had been waiting in the end zone: 2-0 for the Meddlers!

With only three turns left, the game was played. The Mystics could have tried to score a touchdown of their own, but decided to focus on hurting elves. The score remained unchanged, securing the Meddlers’ second victory of the season!

After the game, when the stadium had been nearly abandoned, Timaris approached the spot where Alandrian had died. The poor elf had been stamped into the ground. Timaris lowered himself and collected a pair of teeth of the deceased lineman. He quickly pocketed them before quietly returning home…
