If there's one player you can guarantee will give you 100 per cent every game and epitomise the Liverpool spirit it is Jamie Carragher.


One of the first names on the team sheet Carragher doesn't get the headlines like a Steven Gerrard or Xabi Alonso, but he does a job and does a very good one at that.

The defensive side of his game is brilliant and the attacking side has really improved, and he can play either full back position or centre half. He is an excellent marker and a fine tackler with a fantastic will to win attitude.

Carra was Liverpool's Player of the Season for 2004/05 and was a major part of the team that won the Champions League, Liverpool's fifth European Cup.

Rafael Benitez is a big fan of Carragher and he is one of the first names on his team-sheet. He fought back from a serious broken leg which kept him out for six months in the 2003/04 season.

A member of Liverpool's FA Youth Cup winning team of 1996, Jamie has rose meteorically through the Anfield ranks to become a vital member of the Reds first team. Bootle born, Carragher has been with the club since a schoolboy.

He signed as a professional in October 1996 and made his Reds debut in the second leg of the Coca Cola Cup semi-final against Middlesbrough just three months later, coming on as a substitute for Rob Jones. He celebrated his Premiership debut by scoring with a header at the Kop end against Aston Villa.

His determination to give 100 per cent every time he pulls on the red shirt has made him a firm favourite with both the manager and the fans. The consistency of his performances as Liverpool completed a cup treble in 2000-2001 was evidence of his growing stature in the game.

A one-time captain of the England U-21 team, who also holds the record for the number of appearances at that level, Carragher's progress was rewarded with a first full cap in April 1999, coming on as a substitute in a 1-1 draw in Hungary.
