Nite Owl (also known as Daniel Dreiberg):
Although Rorschach may be the most compelling character in Watchmen — and Ozymandias is definitely the shiniest — Dan Dreiberg, the humble Nite Owl, is the most virtuous. Out of the three, he lives the most fulfilled life, a truly flourishing life. I mean, the man fights crime and writes for ornithology journals! He was Rorschach’s one-time friend and partner but escaped the faceless one’s joyless, reckless lifestyle.

"We were supposed to make the world a better place! What the hell happened to us?"

In Memoriam:
The passing of Nite Owl came as a shock to us all. Craven Ray, the ruthless wight of the Gravecity Nuffleboppers, came out of nowhere on the very first play of the Warpstone Open 2014 Qualifiers Final. The entire Watchmen Philosophy team was caught flat-footed as the Nuffleboppers stormed out of the gate. Though the apothecary was brought in, there was no hope for salvation in this life - Nite Owl was gone for good. He had created a career out of terrorizing those opponents who took to the line, taking down big guy after big guy. With the combined efforts of The Comedian and Rorschach to anchor the line with him, there was no one who could stand in their way. Let us take some time to remember some of the heroic moments of Nite Owl's career.

The back-to-back performances of Nite Owl against the massive ogres of Duh Stompers, coached by Kedryns, and the fearsome chaos warriors of Malal's Malanthropes, headed by xnoelx, certainly stand as a testament to the stopping power possessed by the greatest of Watchmen heroes. In the first matchup, Nite Owl took out several of the giant ogres (along with more than a few snotlings) to tally an impressive five casualties in a single match. For most Bloodbowl stars that would've been a career highlight. For Nite Owl, it served merely as a warmup.

He followed that match up by putting on a blocking clinic against Malal's Malanthropes. The chaos warriors stood little chance against Nite Owl's righteous anger. They were sent packing, victims of yet another five casualty effort by the intrepid Nite Owl.

In a less noteworthy match, but still a career-defining moment, Nite Owl managed to secure an interception in the waning moments of a yawner against gollumullog and his band of necromantic soldiers known as the Dirty Coffins. Though the play of the Watchmen that day was less than inspired, it does rank still as the only team interception in the history of the Watchmen. Had it come earlier in the match, there is a possibility that it might've turned into a Larson. Sadly, that FUMBBL Badge (and team accomplishment) continues to elude the venerable squad of heroes. Perhaps someday, buoyed by the inspiration provided by Nite Owl, another hero will rise from the pitch and leap for a lofted pass, bringing it back to earth and safely away from the clutches of the wretched villains.

Many, many moons ago Nite Owl secured the very first of his star player points in a match against a team called Spread. Coached by postamassimo, who then was just a rookie but has since risen to the ranks of super star, the elusive lizardmen presented quite a challenge for the tackle-impaired members of Watchmen Philosophy. The stunty nature of the skinks combined with the muscle power of the sauri did little to make for an easy matchup. This was quite a long time before the beastmen of Watchmen Philosophy turned into the fearsome characters they are today. They lacked everything - mighty blow, claws, jump up - that make them terrifying for most teams in today's game. But they did have Nite Owl in his humble beginnings. He made all the essential blocks that game, demonstrating a knack for surfing opponents out of the way, clearing a path for the ball carrier by any means necessary. And as the game neared its eventual conclusion, Nite Owl cleverly positioned himself to be ready for a handoff. His smart play and keen grasp of strategy led to a victory in that matchup - as well as many more to follow.

Nite Owl did not limit himself to simply inflicting devastating hits to his opponents, however. He was also a skilled ball handler and managed a multiple touchdown match against the wily elves of Tramontane, coached by the wise Bloodwine. This match was midway through Nite Owl's career and though he was still developing his fearsome blocking skills he did manage to secure the ball at midfield halfway through the initial period and scoring the first touchdown of the game, breaking things open for the Watchmen. Despite multiple attempts at stripping the ball from his grasp by the wood elf lineman Duneyrr, Nite Owl held on and leapt across the goal line for the score.

The second half saw Rorschach bring the ball all the way up the field, only to hand off to his faithful companion Nite Owl in the waning moments of the game, showing the respect that Nite Owl earned so well over the course of his career. The two of them, Rorschach and Nite Owl, remained brothers on the field of battle. Their personalities varied wildly and they often found themselves at odds with how to best approach the job of crime-fighting, but in the end they both realized the benefit in standing shoulder to shoulder with someone who shared the same common goals... even if their methods of achieving those goals were not exactly something they could see eye to eye on.

And so, it is with these words that we lay Nite Owl to rest. He remains a beacon of hope for all Watchmen who follow in his footsteps and we hold faith that the animated corpse that roams the pitch in the dark of night holds some faint memory of his former glory.
