In recent years, Cathayan merchant shipping has suffered immensely from piracy. No longer content to simply loot and pillage their way across the Far Sea, they have become more and more brazen every year, setting up many pirate bases in the coastal provinces and even becoming friendly with corrupt governors, who are more interested in lining their own pockets than following imperial mandate. Many of these pirates have claimed outrageous titles for themselves, referring to their persons as pirate lords and kings in defiance of any higher authority.

Willing to suffer this no longer, the Dragon Emperor initiated far-reaching reforms, sacking countless governors, and swiftly executing those who refused to crack down on criminal activity, or were implicated in it. Believing there to be central leadership, a ‘’pirate king’’ that has authority over the seas, naval task forces were assembled with the intention of hunting him down – no matter how many flagships of known pirate captains they sunk, attacks on merchant shipping would not cease, and little progress was being made. Concluding that this renowned pirate king must have gone in hiding, less and less obvious targets were chosen.

Upon receiving reports that a merchant junk is actually used as a hiding place for wanted pirates, a task force intercepted it during a voyage and boarded it. They found the poorly maintained and ancient ship to be a deathtrap, with several sailors crashing when walking onto rotten planking and falling to their deaths on the floor below – the crew of this supposed pirate king was discovered, and scattered to the winds, with the exception of one Ogre, who held off the Cathayan seamen while the captain attempted to make for a quick escape. The captain fell down the stairs he was climbing and fell unconscious, likely the only reason for why he was captured alive rather than immediately executed.

The Dragon Emperor ordered for the captain and his surviving crew to be brought to Weijin, where they could be publicly executed as part of a demonstration, celebrating Cathay’s victory in the war on piracy. Unbeknownst to them, half the pirate crews in the Far Sea were lead by a ‘’king’’ or ‘’lord’’ or the like, and the captain they had captured was not noteworthy in any aspect other than ill luck. The captain was expected to beg for a merciful rather than rightfully torturous death, but decided to go for one last gamble – an offer.

Cathay does not have much Blood Bowl tradition, despite being a mighty empire, and this has always been a blot on it’s prestige – attempts at forming teams composed of commoners and bannermen have been mediocre at best, and only the best would be good enough for the Dragon Emperor. The remnants of a grizzled pirate crew, used to combat in unusual conditions, and with nothing left to lose could be the best Cathay has to offer. The crew would sign a life contract with the Dragon Emperor, who would sign them onto SLICC, where they would further the prestige of Great Cathay with great victories…or perish.
