Coach Bradbury winced, as ‘The Blizzard’ John Lawford, his Str4, MB, Jump-Up Wardancer ended his days with his face attached to the boot of a rookie DE lineman, who had only ever been taught to kick and maim. Hastily, Bradbury looked across to his apothecary .
“I’m afraid he’s dead boss,” said the apothecary.
“Well heal him then,” said Bradbury, in the tones one might use to talk to a small child.
“Er…I’m sorry boss,” the apothecary mumbled. “Left my bag on the coach…”
Muttering curses Bradbury turned back to the field of play. His superb team were being pasted. Bradbury’s frown slowly turned into a slightly insane grin, as Simon Gallop, his Str3, Ag5 tooled-up catcher, tried to dodge into an empty square and followed the Wardancer to meet his maker.
A pile of bodies was slowly assembling around the Fleetfoot’s dugout. A niggled lineman, a niggled rookie Wardancer, another niggled ag5, guard, lineman. In fact, only Ron Whistlewind, his str4 blodger, seemed to have escaped death or permanent injury. Bradbury’s face set – he knew now what he had to do. Even Dwarves? He shuddered – it would have to be.
Although the game wasn’t over, Bradbury turned and began to stroll as nonchalantly as possible towards the exit. A frenzy of camera flashes charted his progress. From behind him, a shattering of bones signalled that Nuffle’s work was complete. Bradbury didn’t look back. His features relaxed into a genuine smile. This wasn’t the end – this was the beginning…
