Hangman's Hill

The trees of the hill have always had a fearful aspect. Long ago, convicts were led up the track to the glade at the forest border and there hanged. This was partly just punishment but also a sacrifice, the old folk have long known the forest was a place of old magic and the spirits there would tolerate their presence only on sufferance.
The trees remember this, the corpses twisting in the breeze as they hung suspended from their branches and the ground soaked in tears and the despair of condemned men. When the wars ended and bloodbowl swept through the land, the old trees determined a team would be put forward to remind the world of the strength of the forest.
Now as they stride onto the pitch, the mighty trees adorn their great limbs with the bodies of their slain opponents, hung there by the malicious woodland spites that are their allies.
Men say that the old trees are wise. They are that, but they are also terrible as the North Wind and pitiless as Winter. Have a care if you walk in these woods, for if you challenge them nothing will be found of you but the empty eyes of the hanged.
