I'm trying to learn how to play without the use of proxy but can't seem to be able to do it.

I have Windows XP. No firewall that I know of.

When I try to be server, proxy is not checked, the Host is auto filled with comp name and IP (a weird thing here is that this IP is not the same one as the one I see on the overview of FUMBBL) and port is 8080. Clicking HOST, the game gets stuck at the message "Server opening socket."

that's normal. it isn't stuck. it is waiting for a client to connect to your computer. The ip the game autofills is just the first ip it finds. Once you click start there should be a list of ip adresses in the window above the "server opening socket". Just give your opponent the ip displayed on fumbbl and the port (default is 8080). They should also leave proxy unchecked, select client, fill in your ip and port, then click "join".
