In my last game, my opponents big guy failed his bone head roll. In the following turn, i made a block and the big guy counted as an assist. It is my understanding that he lost his tackle zones, so how does he get to assist?

Losing your tackle zone doesn't stop you from assisting, it just means you don't have a tackle zone, so enemies can move without dodging, and assist even if in your (former) tackle zone.

This particular thing is up for mention in this year's Rules Review, though. So, it may change.
