A complete n00b to Fumbbl, I tried to start a game with another rookie. we followed the advice in the "An easier way" part of the Setting up a game help section, and after a little bit of faffing seemed to have got a game launched. However the dialogue box contained the following:
Server trying connection
Listen Thread IO Exception
Connection reset
Closing local sockets
Which repeated.
Was there some problem our end or at FUMBBLS?
many thanks for any help that follows. |

could be, that the proxy wasn't working, so it wasn't your fault. other advice might not be acquired from me. |

No, that's a rhetorical question. |

Thank you flyor. Any reply that suggests I might not be incompetent is gratefully recieved. I'll have to try a game some other time. |

make sure you have a up to date version of java and microsoft '.net' package
make sure you are on the latest version of javabowl
for your first game start the client manually (/javabowl/bbowl.jar)
make sure you have checked fumbbl login in the javabowl options
check 'net server'
server:fumbbl.com
port:8081 (8081 - 8084)
proxy:iamamadeupproxy
