Anyone know much about forum software?
I'm at the early stages of looking for software to run a forum on own server (not set one up on someone else's service).
Threading not required
Ability to rate posts/users a big plus
Free license preferred but not required if there's one worth paying for.
There seem to be a lot of options out there... it would be great if anyone can point me a the best or warn me off the worst.
Must be .Net / SQL /Umbraco compatible.
I'm guessing Christer knows something... |

If you need support for specific CMS software, I recommend starting from there.. A quick google led me to this:
http://our.umbraco.org/projects
where you can find something called nForum.. No idea if it's good though *shrugs* |

Don't know a whole lot, set a few up for folks over the years just which isn't that hard.
Feature-wise I've always been a big fan of vbulletin, but it's not free. phpBB is used by a lot as a as well (and is free) but has had a few security issues over the years. Both have a lot you can do with them through various hacks and mods etc. to get things set up as you'd like.
Been a few years since I've set up a forum for anyone though, the landscape may have changed, but those were the two most common alternatives back then. A couple for you to look into at least hopefully. |
