Are the board and templates / dugouts etc the same in 3rd edition and 4th edition?

I have a 2nd edition astrogranite set and hate it!

Yes. The 2nd ed astrogranite pitch is smaller though.

smaller? I thought that each end zone was 2 squares deep instead of 1 deep, but I thought everything else lenght and width wise was the same.

Or do you mean that each square is smaller?

each square is smaller, I think on the old astrogranite they were 25 mm, now they are 29mm. Biggies used 4 Squares on the old pitch.

I think the number of squares is the same, + those 2 rows you mentioned, one in each end zone.

The pass template in 3rd and 4th edition is the same as in 2nd edition. So the range counted in squares became effectively shorter.
