Quick reply...

I think that new players starting in Unranked, and having to play 3-5 games there is a great idea.

But i also think that having seperate chat channels for ranked and unranked is one of the major contributing factors to a lack of Unranked games available... I think most people treat it as a tournament division only, and don't bother joining the seperate #fumbblunranked channel...

I'm not saying that merging the the two back together is a good idea or a bad idea, this is just my observation.

Now, just playing as devil's advocate for a moment, there are a few drawbacks to consider regarding forced U games:

- Glorifying R. If, like me, you think that people place way too much emphasis on racking up coach rating, then the last thing you want to do is glorify it further. That's exactly what would be accomplished by making R a privilege which has to be earned. Suddenly, everyone plays U for 3 games and then they get to graduate up to the "big leagues." That just makes R a prize, rather than the default, which would probably result in even more people shunning other divisions.

If you can only play unranked in yer first 3 matches, that doesn't glorify Ranked in any way, except when it glorifies all divisions except Unranked, which it wouldn't. It would just set Unranked as the standard division where are all options are open, experimental rosters, learning the game, tournaments, playing crazy matches, crazy tourneys, 1 v 1, 4v4, ...

Currently Ranked is perceived as the standard division and the "ranking" which defines "Ranked" (hence its name) has lost its meaning. So a huge part of Ranked matches don't belong in Ranked but in Unranked, since they are not played in a competitive spirit. This measure would probably help establish Unranked as the general standard, and help in the long run define Ranked as a specialised division like ladder, Divx, faction, ...

If people would not like to see Ranked become what it was meant to be, maybe we could :
- drop the ranking from ranked and rename it to Standard,
- rename Unranked to Open
(because of all the non-official stuff and open rules))
- create a new purely competitive division and call it Ranked.

Limited choices ? Since multiple accounts is forbidden, it would be a rule only affecting the first 3 matches or so, the matches where you learn how the client works, so I don't see where it limits...

As I said, I agree with the idea behind it, but I think that enforcing it is a bad idea. Just encourage any new folks you run into to give it a go and, perhaps, take some time out to make an open U team so that those newbies have someone to play after a couple of games.

Encouraging doesn't work, enforcing does, ask the admins here, ask anyone who has worked in large organisations like LARP-organisations or on-line communities, encouragement alone is never enough.

I agree this would be a ridiculous rule for experienced FUMBBL coaches, but I can not imagine 1 newbie coach having a real problem with this..
