If you are running Linux, you can use `xrandr` to switch to a higher virtual resolution.

For instance, to increase each dimension by 25 %, going from 1024 × 600 to 1280 × 750, you’d issue the following command:

xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1024x600 --scale 1.25x1.25 --panning 1280x750

(Substitute `LVDS1` with your screen name, if necessary—run `xrandr` first without any parameters to find out.)

Sure, the GFX won’t look as crisp any more, but I guess being able to see the whole client outweighs this drawback.
