I've been thinking about what the easiest teams for people new to FUMBBL are, with a view to writing something for the User Guide about it.

If there's a new player, what team are they best advised to play, which they'll have a respectable chance of developing in their first few matches without consistently losing or sufffering demoralising casualties?

Teams which are easily killed, or which tend to start with few rerolls, or bad ball-handling, are (I imagine) less forgiving for a new player to play.

This is what I was thinking so far - based on the advice in the racial strategies/lineups section, what people have said on IRC, and my own very limited experience...

Best to start with
Orcs (flexible, plenty of stompiness)
Humans (a fast team which can block & with cheapish players in case of casualties)

OK
High Elves, Dark Elves (if you want Elves pick these because of AV8)
Skaven (one might die but linerats are cheap replacements)
Chaos Dwarves (have a player for every role and good strength)
Undead (not much agility, but Regenerate and raising zombies means they are somewhat forgiving)

Not So Good
Chaos (need too much development to become a strong team)
Dwarves (slow, unagile, not that strong)
Necromantic (pricier than Undead & needs better play because the positionals are more specialised)
Wood Elves/Pro Elves (AV7 and too expensive to be replaced easily)

Definitely Avoid
Lizardmen (need good play to avoid skink death)
Goblins/Halflings (one match with these players in the wrong place and half the team will be injured)
Vampires/Ogres (negatraits which need careful handling & give you an excuse to avoid improving your play)
Khemri (atrocious agility, and without the benefit of raising zombies)

Not placed yet
Rotters
Amazons
Norse

What do people think - have I got this about right? And where should the teams I've not placed go?

Norse are good for starters, because they all have block, and dont suffer that many turnovers

My also limited exp:

I'm talking about low tr <150.

BEST:
Orcs - forgiving, bash, can play ball.
Undeads - one of the best. Great bashers, forgiving regeneration, also some skills
Dwarfs - lots of block and some matchups (with team that have lot of dodge) are autowin.
Zons - unless forced to play dorfs/chd dodge makes it really good.

OK:
Chd - bulls w/o skills are not so good but anyway v. good team.
Humans - the skillest, av8 is ok. Smile
Skaven/Wood elves - if you want real ball-playing, but av7 can be tricky,
Necro - can be good but need clever coach.
Khemri - with good av rolls quite unstopable.
Norse - av7 but lots of block.

NOT GOOD:
HE/DE - if you want standard 11 lineman - they've got nothing. Some matchups are definitly not good. Can be frustrating.
Chaos - need to skill up
Pro elves - the worst elves ever.
Lizzie - need a lot of skill

HORRIBLE:
Flings, gobbo, vampire, ogre - tier 5 or 50 Smile

Greetings - pingus.

Orrrrrrcccccsssss.

Just so good, and the TR/TS doesn't work very well for them, leading to a slight advantage in games that look 'fair'. Undead and CD are good too for new starters.

Elves are better later on, but learning to play Elves well (especially AV7 ones) takes time and effort.

this is true but I'm not sure the average newbie will know to pick the "right" opponents for their team...

After seeing my G/F take an Amazon team into a league I would EASILY put 'Zons as the best starter team. Orc's are easier, but 'Zons will teach the player more. Dwarves will take the team apart but anyone else will kick, scream and swear as they push a team that gets blanket blodge (Block+Dodge) so quickly.

They have the cheap linepersons of the Humans / Skaven etc with the bonus that you don't HAVE to replace them. you spend your "replacing linepersons" budget on buying rerolls, positionals and starplayers.

The best team for starters is not the easiest to win with, but the one that will teach you more.

Dwarfs are bad, because n00bs will either win the bashfest and think they learnt it all, or lose the bashfest and lose big time the match as well.

Same for zons: zons won't be knocked over and will dodge away, correcting bad placement... but this won't teach much to the new player... it will win him games, but won't be a good school.

Best teams are Orcs, that need careful positioning, and teach how to use blockless ST4 guys and how to cage properly while having av9 (to avoid having too few players to decently play) and humans, that teach the importance of positioning and speed, and more importantly what can be done and what cant be done with AG3.

Losing with these two teams can teach more than winning with zons, imho.

I'm repeating things, I know, but Orcs and Humans are both very good teams for new players as they have decent armor, speed and strength. I haven't played any kind of dwarves, but I have to agree with Jan that with normal dwarwes the newbie won't learn much about ballplay. Orcs can teach the same things while still playing the ball.

My first team was Norse and I'd put them in the OK/not so good section. A team with blanket block is nice, but even with block skulls happen and then the av7 gets them injured/killed. Chaos isn't as likely to have their players die, but with no starting skills they will be tricky to play for a long time.

Wouldnt put skaven/we so high. new players havent got the experience in compairing team strength to avoid the games that will kill them off.

I also agree with JanMattys about zons not being a good team to learn from.

Rotters should be in the bottom chaos with no apo is hard.

Noone should play Khemri Smile.

Definitely agree with this. Humans slightly better than Orcs in my opinion.

In my experience WE are not a good starter team. My first ever game was with a WE team and it made me think that passing the ball constantly was the end all be all. However after I played a Human team I learned that sometimes its better to not risk the rolls. Humans taught me a whole lot more about positioning and effective blocking and blitzing.

I guess another important difference between Humans and Orcs is that Orcs don't die as easily. It seems more like a matter of taste: if the newbie can handle losing players, then humans are probably better.

The problem with putting it into the UserGuide is that it becomes semi official. While most agree on Orcs and Humans - there aren't that much agreement on many of the other teams. Personally I think that DE and HE are great starting teams and I also think that Chaos is an ok team but I don't think CD is anything that new players so touch.

We all have our different opinions about what is good and what isn't - and putting it in the guide will make some people think that its the "right" teams since it is in the guide.

Orcs are good BUT..it depends on whether you like caging and stalling, they are not particularly useful if you like scoring quickly.

Humans and Zons would be my pick for newish players as they can both play a mobile game and are fairly solid early on.

the norse team are not so good for newbies they have a low av (7) and all have same stats with an extra skill or 2 for positions.

But have block is good it just doesn't quite cover all the negatives
