This thread is for coaches involved in the Ulysses Maverick Trophy. Boasts, brags, whinges and any other comments from group members welcome!

Ok, well 3 divisions are up and running. We still need a couple of coaches to start up the 4th and final division, so if you know anyone with a LRB compliant [U] team with TR160 or less, give 'em a nudge to join up.

Only about 12hrs left now for Round 1 games to be played. If you haven't done so already, PM me if you're having problems getting hold of your opponent otherwise your tie will be randomly forfeited.

I may consider replacements for teams that haven't played their first game but would be appreciate your thoughts about this.

Any [U] LRB compliant teams with TR160 or less interested in joining this tournament put in an application now and we'll see if we can fit you in.

Round 1 Summary

Div A
Three teams got off to winning starts here. Nukeall's Astronautes sailed 3-0 past Mazzix's Shadow's Blood team although I'm sure Mazzix will be happy that his team came through unscathed for the next match. His Dark Elves started off with a lower TR than the other teams, so he will need all his coaching acumen for his team to progress to the playoffs.

Diamond5119's Nuit de L'Epouvante were overcome 2-1 by Frobo's Insane in the Membrane. I'm sure Diamond will be a little disappointed that his Nurgles were unable to break down the armour of Frobo's stocky dwarves, while Frobo will be very pleased with the win and his bull centaur, Bullderdash's performance in collecting 1 TD, 1 CAS and the man of the match award.

cyric612's Black Plague Reloaded started well against AloneAndBurned's norse team, Shiv Sena Party and won by 2 clear TDs to prepare themselves for their next challenge. AloneAndBurned will be giving his Norse team extra training after they got knocked about a bit by those little rats despite them missing their usual bonecrunching rat ogre.

Div B
Div B only saw one game played this round and Afro's Undefeated combined their skill and luck to give Hellraiser's German Thunder a 3-0 hammering. With Hellraiser's dark elves already suffering from a number of niggles, he will be disappointed to lose another lineman, Suicide Commando and will need a good result against Monboesen's norse team in the next round.

Div C
Three teams picked up maximum points in this division too albeit one by forfeit. MCSEMan23's Rack Destruction relished their match against the agile abut fragile elves of Gary_Gygax's A.S Roma Trues Elves although they may have wished for more carnage against those elusive prancers. In one of the lowest crowd turnouts in Round 1, A.S Roma will be pleased to be able to add 40K to their coffers without having to replace any of their 1st team squad after it was confirmed that injury-prone Damiano Tommasi's injury is not as serious as first feared - the club's apothecary has confirmed he will be back in training shortly and is expected to play in Round 3.

The other game saw SerXes' Evil Intentions make light work of wooden spoon favourites, Tuck Shoppe Raiders run by BB_Pad. Not content with getting minced by SerXes undead warriors, the Raiders added to the casualties when Harry tried to dodge away from the awesome Evil Wasp only to slip and somehow break his neck. Overall SerXes will be very pleased with the scoreline and bodycount while adding a hefty pile of gold to the coffers from the highest gate of 87,000 in Round 1. For the Raiders, things only look to get worse as they will be without one of their crucial Treemen and their only surviving veteran fling for the next encounter against the realms of the undead, Fellwesterion's khemri. Who said good always prevails over evil?

Div D
In tightest and definitely the most hardcore division of the tournament, only 1pt separates the top four teams. The first game saw Milnestar's Femoral F.C make hard work of Sk8bcn's new chaos dwarf team, Axes of Terror, but finally picked up a 2-1 win. Sk8bcn would've been happy with a draw, but with no long term damage to his team and some extra cash in the bank to hire a new Hobo, the Axes can look forward to their next game if the missing Unorganised Crime coach, Bardurnon, is ever found again. It was Dementor's Zooropa who took advantage of Bardurnon's absence, although I'm sure they would've preferred the game experience to take into their next match against LurkingGrue's chaos dwarves.

The final game saw Hindsberg's Russen take on LurkingGrue's Zharr-Naggrund Zealots. The Russen chaos team managed to scrap a draw despite some awful luck. Clearly LurkingGrue's sacrifcice of his rookie Hobo, Kouang to the Chaos gods was not enough to guarantee him the win and he will be disappointed not to have been able to turn that luck into casualties - his Zealots certainly look like they are normally very able at this!

It looks like we definitely need 1, and maybe even 2 replacement teams for this tournament due to dropouts / absent coaches.

Unranked LRB teams of TR160 or less are invited to apply. Priority will be given to less "bashy" teams to maintain the balance.

Replacement teams will start with 0 pts but as only 1 round has been played so far, there are still 4 rounds in which to achieve qualification.

PM me if you're interested but have any queries.

Div A

Two teams remain at the top with Nukeall's Astronautes gaining an easy 2pts through Frobo's absent Insane In The Membrane after their team bus suffered an onboard navigation computer malfunction. The other top dogs - or should I say rats - Black Plague Reloaded lead by cyric612 steamrollered through round 2 with a fantastic 5-1 over Diamond5119's Nuit de L'Epouvante in front of a measly 52000 fans. Lanky gutter runner, F toun, was the hero in this game with three speedy touchdowns. While cyric's Skaven suffered 6 casualties, their apothecary has confirmed that all players will be fit and ready for their next fixture. Responding to a question regarding their bad luck, Diamond was reported to have said in the postmatch interview "Nuffle stinks!" - strong stuff coming from a Rotters coach.

In the third game of this division, AloneAndBurned's Shiv Sena Party edged out Mazzix's Shadow's Blood by 2-1. Last week's extra training paid off for the Norse team as they inflicted 4 casualties, but Mazzix can yet again take some consolation that his team came through with no permanent injury even if top lineman, Bengi, will be out for their crunch tie against leaders Black Plague Reloaded. Shiv Sena Party's success came from good team work but Shri Subodh Mohite, their experienced Blitzer, deserves a mention for his touchdown and casualty. Their ogre Shri Balasaheb Thackeray had a quiet game but he will need to be on top form for the Norse team if they are to overcome Frobo's chaos dwarves next round and stop the top teams from pulling away.

Div B

Div B saw Afro's human team, Undefeated lead the way with another victory, this time over one of two newcomers in the group, Mafo's Amazons, Girls With Attitude. Undefeated's emerging star catcher, Running Man scored the winner in a brutal game that saw 8 casualties including 4 fatalities although some good work by both team's apothecaries reduced the body count to GWA's veteran linewoman, Lisa (a loss they could've done without in their small squad) and Undefeated's rookie lineman, New Nightmare. A 3rd win for Undefeated should see them through to the play-offs, although they will be without their Ogre blocker after he suffered a nasty leg injury in a ferocious challenge by Amazon blitzer, Julia, that the medics could do nothing about.

In the only other game in this division, the other newcomers, Britnoth's Dominus took on Hellraiser's German Thunder who were looking to regain some pride after their 3-0 defeat in the 1st round. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned for Thunder's dark elves and despite a fierce game in which their blitzer, Hulk Hogan caused 2 out of 3 casualties against Dominus, they conceded 3 TDs due to a star performance by the Amazon catcher, Susan on her debut. Brithnoth can look forward to great things from this youngster by this match's showing, but the victory will be soured somewhat by the death of Susan's attacking partner, Stephanie, and the complicated recurring injury to Karen that has seen the thrower hang up her Blood Bowl boots and open a beauty salon in lower Lustria. Hellraiser's team now face a tough task after two defeats in two, and will need to get a vital win under their belt in Round 3 if they are to entertain any hopes of reaching the play-offs. They face a tough task as their next opponents are Peikko's Bashers Dream. However, the Bashers have yet to play in this tournament sparking rumours that the once-feisty dwarves have lost their nerve and are living off the reputation of their head coach.

Div C

Once again, three teams picked up maximum points in this division, although only two teams lead the way now after MCSEMan23's Rack Destruction stuttered in their attempt to keep up with the top teams. They were edged out by ChrisB's Welsh Dragons (and Werewolves) who started their tournament in style after forfeiting their 1st game. Despite the Chaos gods favouring the Rack Destruction team, the Welsh Dragons' luck held when it counted and an unbelievable interception by Flesh Golem, Frank "Mountain" Darrens and touchdowns from Ghoul, Chris "Two Lefts" Cahn and the solitary werewolf, Fido "Nibbler" Vargull gave them the win. Rack Beastman, Vangwet put in a good performance with a TD and a rare completion to become the Destruction's leading scorer, but MCSEMan will be disappointed to not to have been able to turn their apparent good fortune into league points or at least more casualties!

Fellwesterion's DödaKungsholmen strolled through their first game of the tournament against BB_Pad's hapless halflings, the Tuck Shoppe Raiders. The Raiders started well - by their standards at least - evening causing a fatality in the Khemri ranks until the gods of Chaos whipped up a mysterious time vortex that took the game back to the start and the halflings reverted to their usual feeble selves. Fellwesterion's lethal players all took turns in battering their pint-sized opponents and racked up 6 casualties. However, the only fatality came - yet again! - when Raiders lineman, Little Larry, dodged away from the ferocious Mummy, Jörgen Kruth, only to slip and crack his head on a bottle of Orca-Cola. After that incident the shellshocked Tuck Shoppe boys lost what little fight was left and the Khemri ran away with a 2-0 win. A rare treat for Mummy fans saw rookie Rickard Nordstrand Jr add to his casualty when he walked in the first TD. Then in the 2nd half, Döda's Blitz-Ra, Johnny scored after a fantastic hail mary pass by Thro-Ra, Petter. In a bizarre twist, the flings' only available treeman, Teatree, amidst growing rumours of cowardice after he had strangely avoided entering the field for the whole game despite arriving on time , still managed to earn himself the Raiders MVP award. A reward for wisdom over bravery perhaps?

The final game of Division C saw SerXes' Evil Intentions continue their good start to the campaign with a 2-1 victory over Gary_Gygax's A.S Roma Trues Elves. A good performance by experienced catcher, Vincenzo "Aeroplanino" Montella, saw Roma equalise after Evil Intentions had taken the lead, but once again they were unable to stop the advance of a tough team and TDs from Ghoul, Evil Guran and Zombie, Evil Gurgel saw the Evil maintain their place at the top of the division with DödaKungsholmen. Both teams came through unscathed and Gary_Gygax's elves can relish the thought of being on the right end of a bashing when they face the Tuck Shoppe Raiders in the next round. SerXes' team are steadily building themselves up and look like they could be one of the favourites to win the tournament. Time will tell, as they face their strongest challenge yet when they face ChrisB's necros, the Welsh Dragons (and Werewolves) in the next round.

Div D

In what is being called "The Group of Death", only 3 pts now separate 5 of the 6 hard-hitting teams. Milnestar's Femoral F.C maintained their 100% record with narrow win over Hindsberg's Russen. In a fairly quiet affair between these two bonecrunching teams, there were only 5 casualties although Milnestar will need his 60K prize money to replace experienced human lineman, Dorsalis Pedis after he didn't live to regret an encounter with Russen's powerhouse Minotaur, Smellnov. Femoral ogre blitzer, Sartorius added to his 3rd career casualty when he scored the only touchdown of the game and is not far off veteran status after only 5 games. Femoral will need Sartorius' skills and that of treeman, Illiacus, if they are to maintain their top spot as they have probably the most fragile team in this division.

Sk8bcn's Axes of Terror may have been hoping for 2pts from a forfeit to get them off the mark, but ended up facing newcomers, Set the World on Fire - Gitzbang's Necromantics. The inexperienced Chaos dwarves maintained the pressure on their opponents throughout the game inflicting 6 casualties in the process, but were unable to turn their possession into touchdowns. Set the World on Fire's response came with the lightning speed of werewolf, The Pastor of Disaster, who scored two TDs in his first ever game. Gitzbang's Zombie lineman, The Sound of Horror suffered a lasting serious injury and retirement after inflicting his team's only casualty when the Axes got revenge through Blocker, Hornasher, that even the zombie's normal regenerative ability couldn't help.

Well as expected, Dementor's Zooropa needed the extra game experience that they might've gained had their 1st opponents turned up, when they faced LurkingGrue's Zharr-Naggrund Zealots in front of 92,000 fans - the highest gate of the round. Both teams were very evenly matched and with the gods of Chaos apparently favouring neither side especially, it was the Chaos dwarves that took all the spoils. Hobogoblin, Duger scored the winning touchdown, the first of his - probably short - career but all in all no one player stood out in this contest. Zooropa Mummy, Ursus, added one more casualty to his record to take his overall tally to 12, but the chances of Dementor's Khemri team advancing to the knockout stage took a further setback when experienced Blitz-Ra, Panthera II was mortally wounded in a fierce challenge with Zealots Bull Centaur, Khair-Udeen Qanttorus. Compounding their problems, Zooropa's prize money from the huge attendance somehow only amounted to 30K. It has since been reported that Zooropa's senior management have launched an investigation into alleged fraud by their accountants, Dodgi & Doji. LurkingGrue's team, now on 3pts, can look forward to an all-chaos dwarf tie against the low-rated Axes of Terror next round - can Sk8bcn's side cause a major upset? Dementor's team face Hindsberg's Russen with both sides needing a vital win to boost their play-offs qualification but neither side can afford to lose.

Great praise to BB_Pad for his elaborate and atmospheric summary of each round! There must be a lot of work running into this but it makes the Ulysses Maverick Trophy a most memorable tournament!

Keep it up, BB_Pad! And to my competitors: provide some match reports that make BB_Pad's work easier!

Thanks Dementor! Very Happy I'm not replaying the games, just looking at the match reports, so yes, any comments or game commentaries would be very welcome & useful.

Sk&bcn - at the moment the plan is to keep this tournament going, but I suppose it depends on how the rest of this season goes and how much interest there is.

Round 3 Summary
Div A

Nukeall's Astronautes took full advantage of cyric612's and Mazzix's inability to schedule their game to go 2pts clear at the top of Div A with a 4-0 rout of Diamond5119's Nuit de L'Epouvante. Their win came courtesy of some great blocking and a two-touchdown debut from Blitzer, Edgard Mitchell. Nuit's efforts weren't helped when Emerging Star Beastman, Le Fils Des Ombres de la Nuit somehow managed to slice through his own carotid artery during an innocuous challenge on Astronautes Blitzer, Virgil Grissom, and bled to death in front of his laughing team mates. This second heavy defeat for the Rotters team means their chances of reaching the playoffs are remote and with a growing injury problem, they may need to consider building for next season.

Elsewhere, AloneAndBurned's Shiv Sena Party followed up last round's 2-1 win with another over Div A newboys, Hammers Slammers lead by Patton_71. Touchdowns came from Lineman, Shri Manohar Joshi and rookie Catcher, Shri Anant Geete. While two more completions from Thrower, Shri Divakar Ravate takes him to top of the Completions Table for the tournament on 7. This wins sees AloneAndBurned's Norse team building very nicely and keeping in with a good chance for the knockout stages. Their next game is against is against leaders, Astronautes, and a win here would really make Shiv Sena Party favourites to go through as Astronautes will face cyric612's Black Plague Reloaded in the final group game. For Hammers Slammers, well they will need to win their remaining two games to entertain any chances of progressing and although they have a solid and fairly healthy team, with their next game against cyric612's freescoring skaven, they will certainly have their work cut out.

Div B

Unfortunately, only one game played in Div B this round but what a surprise result it turned out to be! After Afro's Undefeated 1-0 win over Mafo's amazons last round, the human team's fans - and maybe the team itself - may have expected a similar result against Britnoth's amazons, Dominus. How wrong could they have been, as Dominus ran away 3-0 winners and left Undefeated licking their sore wounds after suffering 5 casualities with only 1 in reply. Much was expected from Amazon Catcher, Susan, after her great debut last round but it was pacy veteran Linewoman, Maria, who stole the show with 2 of the 3 touchdowns. Overall, Dominus' success must surely be attributed to the superb performances of their Blitzers. Michelle scored the other touchdown, while Jennifer earned herself the MVP in severing the head of experienced human lineman, Rodney the Dangerfield. Undefeated's Emerging Star Blitzer, No Whining took revenge on Jennifer leaving her with a broken jaw that will see her on the treatment table for some time, but No Whining was in turn left with a permanent knee injury, when Amazon Blitzer Lisa brought him down and took her career total casualities to 8 with one of two bonecrunching tackles in this game. Afro's Undefeated face the elusive Bashers Dream in the 4th round, and if their opponents do show up then they will certainly miss No Whining as he currently is the tournament's Top Blocker with 5 casualities.

This group is wide open, with both Dominus and Undefeated topping the table on 4pts. Mafo's Girls With Attitude earned 2pts thanks to another no-show by Uber Non Morti, and they next face their Amazon counterparts, Dominus in an all-girl match that is sure to have plenty of male fans turning up to watch! Peikko's Bashers Dream are also on 2pts, despite further rumours of their side's growing fear of playing blood bowl. In fact an unnamed source within the dwarf team's entourage was reported as saying that they were actually considering changing the name to Wet Dream. Hellraiser's German Thunder remain on 0pts and perhaps they should look to use their remaining games to strengthen their team for next season.

Div C

The top two in Div C maintained their 100% records and pulled further away from the chasing pack. Firstly, Fellwesterion's DödaKungsholmen edged past MCSEMan23's Rack Destruction 1-0. The Khemri team used their greater skill and strength to good effect and nullified MCSEMan23's attacking plans in a game that saw both teams struggling to control the ball for much of the game. DödaKungsholmen's veteran Mummy, Larry Lindwall picked up his first two casualties of the tournament and took his career tally into double figures, although Rack's medical team made sure there was no lasting injuries. It was agile experienced Skeleton, Skellepelle who scored to give Fellwesterion's Khemri the victory. MCSEMan23's Rack Destruction had started this tournament confidently with a win, but two consecutive defeats make it doubtful they will have a successful season although their next opponents are the stunty Tuck Shoppe Raiders. Can the Destruction use their superior blocking power to turn around their bad luck?

Steadily becoming tournament favourites, SerXes's Evil Intentions once again swept aside their opponents, this time ChrisB's Welsh Dragons (& Werewolves) in front of the highest gate of the tournament yet - 93,000. After the Welsh Dragons' win last round, many were taking bets that they would be make a strong charge up the table but that was before they encountered the growing might of SerXes's undead team. The Evil's veteran Ghoul, Evil Guran kept himself in the running for Tournament Top Scorer with his 3rd of the tourney, while their veteran Zombie, Evil Lefty remains a good bet for Tournament Top Blocker after he earned his third casualty through some thumping blocks against his Zombie counterparts in the Dragon's team. Necromancer ChrisB will be disappointed that his opponents were able to keep his usual heroes - emerging star Werewolf, Fido "Nibbler" Vargull, veteran Ghoul Chris "Two Lefts" Cahn and veteren Wight, Karloff "Shady" Depp - quiet for the whole game Although their hopes of qualifying for this season's playoffs are over, the necromantic's coach will certainly be expecting a lot more from them when they visit Gary_Gygax's AS Roma in the next round. Meanwhile, Evil Intentions will next face Fellwesterion's DödaKungsholmen in what is being billed as a preview of the grand final. What a crunch tie this should be!

Finally, despite losing 3-0 to Gary_Gygax's A.S Roma Trues Elves, BB_Pad's Tuck Shoppe Raiders can be mildly happy that all of their team survived to eat another roast dinner or didn't end up as log on a roaring fire. In fact they could say they enjoyed this game as they were played off the field by the graceful elves of A.S Roma. Gary_Gygax's team are beginning to show that they are a team to be reckoned with especially after scoring an almost maximum yardage touchdown that took the ball from the edge of their endzone all the way into the Raiders' endzone in one fast flowing turn of play. A fantastic long bomb from rookie lineman, Agostino Di Bartolomei was deftly caught by experienced catcher, Bruno Conti, who raced up the field and handed off to catching partner, Mancini to run the remaining distance for his 2nd touchdown of the game, much to the addulation of the ecstatic Elf fans and shocked disbelief of the Raiders fans and team! Elf blitzer, Francesco "Er Pupone" Totti had another good game scoring the 3rd touchdown, getting his first casuality and being awarded his 3rd MVP to make him the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Div D

Well in this round, the "Group of Death" failed to live up to its name with not a single fatality. It started with an easy 2pts for Milnestar's Femoral F.C that saw them move onto 6pts after their opponents, Gitzbang's Set The World on Fire went missing for much of Round 3. According to rumours, the necromantic coach took his team away to the undead sunshine state of Cemetarida for a few days to celebrate their Round 2 win but their return was delayed as half their team were killed when their flight crashed. Fortunately, being dead already, Gitzbang should able to re-animate his players in time for the next match.

LurkingGrue's Zharr-Naggrund Zealots continued to keep the pressure on Femoral with a good 2-0 win that takes then onto 5pts. Their all-Chaos Dwarf clash against sk8bcn's underdogs, Axes of Terror had the 71,000 fans expecting plenty of gore as 2 trolls, 4 bull centaurs and a dozen Chaos dwarf blockers took the field. However, the anticipated bloodfest never occurred as the game finished without a single casualty. While not able to cause an upset, sk8bcn will be quite happy his team came through unscathed as they faced a 49 pt rating difference and the coach is trying get his rookies as much experience as possible for a good run in next season's tournament. LurkingGrue can also be pleased as he will have a full team to face top team, Femoral F.C. in what could be the group winner decider, especially after finding out that Milnestar's team had a week off. Zealot veteran Hobgoblin, Batenkh scored his 2nd of the tournament and fellow Hobgoblin, Mongke scored the other. These two players, Batentk with his reliable hands in particular, look like they are becoming very important players for LurkingGrue's Chaos dwarves and they will need all the protection that their well-armoured dwarven masters can give them.

In the final game of Div D, Hindsberg's Russen took on Dementor's Zooropa with both teams needing a win to keep up with the top two teams. A defeat would've ended the playoff hopes for either team and perhaps with this in mind, neither team was prepared to take any big risks to get that winning TD, the final whistle blowing at 1-1. Experienced Thro-Ra, Tragelaphus scored for Dementor's khemri team while rookie Mummy, Taurus, opened his UMT casualty count with two fierce blocks, one of which left Russen's rookie Beastman, Flemmingkov writhing in agony with an arm injury; the Chaos team's doctor later confirmed the bad news that Flemmingkov's arm had indeed been fractured to a career-shortening extent. It was more bad news for the Panthera family as Russen set about their task of inflicting damage with their usual relish. Panthera III, who comes from a long line of resurrected Blitz-Ra's, was playing his first game following "brother" Panthera II's death in the last match. However, his joy at being called upon to wreak revenge on the living was cut short when he was viciously bitch-slapped by Hindberg's star player Beastman & makeshift quarterback, Macharov with his enormous hand. The resulting damaged back was enough for coach, Dementor to transfer him to his backroom staff and raise up another
"brother", Panthera IV to seek vengeance. We can only hope that the Panthera bad luck has ended - for a short while at least! Despite this draw, there is still plenty of hope for Dementor's Zooropa. If Zharr-Nagrund Zealots can avoid defeat against Femoral in the next round then Zooropa will be in a good position to capitalise and wins against bottom dogs Axes of Terror next round and against Femoral in the last group round will be enough to earn them a place in the final stages. For Hindberg all is not lost either, although their chances are considerably slimmer. They need Femoral to win their remaining two matches and for Gitzbang's Set the World on Fire to overcome Zooropa, while themselves winning their remaining games - difficult, but not impossible!

UMT Season 2?

We are reaching the end of the group phase and some of you have asked if there will be another season.

I've had fun running this tourney and I hope you've all enjoyed it too. So I would like to continue the UMT beyond the end of this season, but am uncertain as to the best way of managing this.

My preference would be to keep this tournament in the same format with teams restricted to TR160 or less. However, this would exclude the many of you that have exceeded or will eventually exceed the TR limit through playing in the tournament.

We would then open a new tournament within the group - the Super UMT. This unrestricted TR tourney would only be open to existing members that have sucessfully completed a season of UMT. Coaches would then have the choice of joining the Super UMT, reducing TR and staying in the UMT, or withdrawing from the group altogether.

Both tournaments would run concurrently and at the end of the season, Super UMT teams that fall below TR 160 would be able to rejoin the UMT to build up their teams for another crack at the Super UMT the following season.

What do you all think?

I'm game for it again... it should be cool! I will probably decide after the game vs rotters, he probably will kill enough to drop me down to the TR cap. More than likely, I will go Super... but either way, I want in on the next one.
