Considering the difficulty of finishing a cycle in the box, especially with high TV team (gl to find stunties after 1800TV !), I don't think Box team can really compete with Ranked ones. Not sure it's really a problem though : two différents rankings could work just fine, with no need to change the system that much.
About high score games and other bonus : I think those additionals mini-games are a really fine part of ELF, as they give some meanings to second halves of already won matches that could become a bit boring sometimes.

Except you don't need stunties to finish a cycle. Lizardmen are in the same category as are Norse and humans. No it's not automatic you'll finish, but it's not crazy hard either.

However, the box is absolutely getting out there and leaving the forest. It should be close to the ideal environment, and rewarded as such.

And it's fine to have those secondary goals. That's why I left the bonus points in. But having full points for TDs and cas means that you need to dice your opponent, or play weak teams so that it looks like you're riding your opponent, to be competitive. That isn't reasonable from most matches. Heck, even most stunty matchups don't qualify, and when playing against flings or ogres or goblins, coached by a strong coach, aren't going to qualify as a competitive game, I think the scoring has an issue.

One goal of the League has always been to encourage our teams to play against a variety of different race, so the Categories were created to provide a guideline. These seem less necessary in the League and Box environments with (usually) set schedules and random matchups respectively.

Also, the 10-match Cycle was a creation to allow coaches that played fewer matches a chance to compete with those that played dozens per season. Since the League allows the latest, best match to replace older matches, that doesn't really hold true.

If I were to tweak those aspects of the League, we would see a radically different competition...

What if only the first 2 matches vs. 2 different races you played in any given Category counted towards your Cycle? No more playing Orcs 4 times and keeping the best score; now the first result sticks. After you complete a Cycle, your team can begin another with any given team being able to appear in the standings more than once?

We could also loosen the Category requirement for Box (and League) teams such that their first 10 matches against any 10 different races count. Only Ranked, since they can choose their opponents, has to jump through the hoop of spreading out the matches through 5 different Categories so we don't see Cat-A-free/Cat-E-heavy Cycles. Either that, or make the Baseline points such that Ranked teams will search out a set of 10 matches similar to the most common 10 opponents in Box (I'm leaning towards this solution)?

Just thinking out loud at this point.

I remember ELF being created as an answer to the EMU

https://fumbbl.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=554&highlight=elf+mangling+union

E.M.U. said "let's hunt down those prancy soft elves!"

E.L.F. said, "come at me, bro."

From the moment the E.L.F. concept popped into existence in the mind of AFK_Eagle:
AFK_Eagle wrote:
This is an exploration into potential interest in forming the E.L.F. League or Elves Leaving the Forest League. In response to accusations that elves are afraid to play anybody but other elves, this group is being established. There have been aborted attempts at elves playing elves and elves standing up to the EMU, this is something different. This group exists purely to encourage elves to play other races. In fact, you are not allowed to play other elves at all! Or rather, no points are awarded for playing other elven teams. Use them as often as required as recovery games, or just to play and revel in pure elvenness. But to advance in the E.L.F. you must first broaden your horizons. Elven teams of any source (ranked, unranked, faction or DivX) can participate....

Here's the key concept to the league: you are awarded points for playing a "new" race. Each team will have records kept for which non-elven races are played. Once you play a given race, you are not given any further points for having played them until you've played ALL other races once. For example, your first game is vs a skaven opponent. You can play three consecutive games vs a skaven team, but points are awarded only for the first game. You do not get points for playing another skaven coach until after you've played chaos, orc, human, etc, at least once each. After all races played (yes, to include Ogres atm, subject to debate), all races become open once more for point play...

Due to the general lack of halfling/goblin coaches, they are not required to be played as part of your cycle. However, any games vs flings/gobs count as normal, and just as normal you are not allowed to play again until all other races have been played. Games vs Kaos league count one and a half times the points; games vs EMU teams count double.

Playing against EMU was heavily rewarded, but it looks like AFK_Eagle was trying to change the nature of matches elves were willing to play in that time long ago by introducing the E.L.F. I can't remember what Kaos League was all about, I'll have to do some research on it.

I really need to track down and archive all those first threads on the E.L.F. group page.

That's actually fun. Count only the first game against each race in Ranked ; compare that to a 24 game sprint in the box. Ok that's a lot more game, maybe you'll need to go to 3 months Smile

I like the idea of the same team entering multiple times rather than continually working towards a better score.

However, I also like something that rewards playing a lot - in particular, it could be (depending on how the details work out) possible someone to play 25 matches, but only complete 1 cycle, because they played the same 3 races 5 times. We don't want to encourage people to do this because it's an easy race (the stereotypical idea of ranked picking isn't good), but in the box if you play 5 nurgle and 5 orcs and 5 dwarves it can be very frustrating.

So I'd also be interested in rules that specifically reward playing more (maybe +1 point for 3 matches against the same race, +2 for 6 matches against the same race). If this was the choice, I would say not entering the same team multiple times.

That a Veteran Ranked coach leading the list is all about u have to know about the "competition" of ELF. And counting only the first two games will hardly increase the cherry picking. How much black box teams win ELF? That's the real competition. And don't get me wrong, I'm a fan.
