I don't suppose we could find a way to implement this online? It looks fun!
[EDIT]
After thinking about it a bit more I guess it's nice but only partss of it are really nice. Transfers, for instance are cute but not necessarily good except in really large leagues, then you could hope for EPL style transfer. In that sense, a FUMBBL type arena might be useful for transfers.. Still, it's not necessary for enjoyment. Neither do I agree with the division between "Pros" and "Stars".

I think the really good thing about these rules is the concept of quirks for stars. The current rules just don't provide enough variety in "aging", and if we could somehow apply the idea of quirks for aging, as opposed to simply niggles and stat losses, then it would be really cool! Going along with this is the idea of the "random events" attracted by the Star Players.

As a suggestion, maybe you could split the whole thing up into modules? Like, different rule modifiers which Commishes could apply to their leagues?

As I note in the (endless, rambling) notes to these rules: I too think running this on-line would be great, but it would be a massive task - and it's not going to happen. With JavaBB for instance, SkiJunkie is a long way from even adapting his client for Vault, never mind for some nutty, niche alternate league rules.

The transfer problem is addressed to an extent in the rules set: for it to work well you either need to have lots of teams of the same race(s); or adopt some kind of allied race system (yuck!). A larger pool of coaches would of course be ideal.

The division between Pros and Stars exists primarily because Stars (with their Quirks) are hugely complicated creatures: if every player on a team used the Star rules for progression (ie they could all have Quirks) then this would be a major headache for most coaches, I think.
As things stand, the added complexities of Stars and their Quirks and Events are compensated for by the simplicity of Pros. Also: there is some movement possible from Pro to Star - unlike second edition, a player can become a Star later in his career, not just when he stops being a Rookie.

EPL? Is that 'English Premier League'? Or something else entirely? The main transfer system outlined in these rules is a football- (aka soccer-) based one, but this is easily adapted to an American football style system with a draft, etc.

Well, this version of the rules is designed to be used in conjunction with Vault/PBBL, in which Ageing is gone (hurray!). So, yes, they effectively function as a version of ageing which is actually fun - although sometimes it will still cause coaches to despair (Wasted Talent, *sob*).

I'll see if it is possible to work on this too: League Commissioners should of course feel free to use as much or as little of my rules as they please. My only request is that - whatever changes you may make - that you not distribute the rules set except in its original form.

I had a quick look at the rules, especially the Star Player quirks, which I really like - almost every one seemed to perfectly describe the lately departed George Best (RIP), and a good few other flawed genius sportsmen. You had a wealth of material to draw upon! The only thing that caught my eye was that Despised didn't have an opposite, representing a player who is respected by all fans, however grudgingly. The nearest real life sportsman I can think that exhibits this is Andrew Flintoff (English cricketer), an absolute gent and star, who my mother would happily trade both me and my brother for.

This ruleset would definately only work on tabletop, and would indeed need a commited commish.

As it stands, the rules are unreadable - I'd need a print out to look at them properly, and even then there's huge paragraphs of text, requiring reading through the whole lot.

There is a House Rules forum for BB on Specialist-games.com - if you haven't posted your link there yet, I suggest you do so. There's every chance that some of your rules may catch the eye of the man in charge of new rules, GalakSkyscraper/Tom Anders, who might borrow some of the best bits for his own experimental league or even future rules.

Lastly, well done for thinking outside the box. Long may it continue.

We need to educate ourselves a bit more. And have a lifeless episode in our otherwise miserable lives. Maybe a fumbbl-server breakdown?

I thought about quoting the footballer I used for reference with each Quirk, but that might've been too harsh ... There is Fan's Favourite, which is kind of an opposite to Despised but only means your own fans like you. TBH, in a game like Blood Bowl, it's hard to imagine that any Star could be loved by all fans!

I might however add an (extremely rare) Quirk with the effect: the fans will never hurt this player on kick-off rolls, and if pushed into the crowd he's only ever stunned. Name it <i>Respected</i> maybe?

I'm always eager to improve this: in some ways there's no getting round the problem of reading on a computer screen though. I hope the hyperlinks within the text help a bit, but more suggestions as to how the rules can be more manageable are appreciated!

Thanks for the directions to the TalkBB (EDIT: or rather the Specialist games forum) forum: I shall post there in due course!

No, this is just the thread I started for my alternate league rules. It was just meant to be a contribution to your thread, not a redirection. Smile

^^U

Anyway I'm thinking of making a *massive* document on house rules and custom teams Very Happy. So I'll read carefully this post as well as others and just compile it for the sake of Nuffle (and BB coaches...).

Blood bowl means fun, let's have it!

Looks like a lot to read, sorry but im a lazy b*st*rd and have a reading disorder. So I havent got the patience to read it all. Looks very much like blood bowl, and I like it the way it is. (Though Id like to have it updated to lrb 5.)

Besides that, I wish you good luck and hope everything goes well.

Seems like high maintenance but if I had time and a regular league I would be keen.
I much preferred the second ed version of random or semi random skills and think that would be a real positive for BB to revert back to similar.
It stops seeing team lineups that have all players of same position with identical skills.....

I've glanced at your rules, and although raw, they're appealing.

If you've ever played the original PC game, one of it's appeals was that you played in a continuous league (even if it was rather flaky in it's implementation).
Also, the Deathmatch boxed-set with Random Events, Secret Weapons, Dirty Tricks, etc, were rather fun, and gave it a more realistic feel, for lack of a better term (as if such a thing were possible in a fantasy board-game Razz).

Your rules combine the two in some respects.

Seeing as your rules do not actually touch anything on-board (in-game), it shouldn't be that difficult to implement an application or a website that aids in doing all the pre-match and post-match stuff. SkiJunkie's BB Server/Client allows you to play the games with the given rosters, and then saves the results (either by uploading or saving locally). If you took those results yourself and processed them using your rules, or had an app something like League Manager (I haven't used it, so I don't know how useful it is), then you'd have a kind of Blood Bowl Manager going.

-Which is something I've been looking/waiting for for a while.

Couple that with my suggestions on keeping BB closer to the actual Warhammer World (http://fumbbl.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=9204), and you'd have something resembling the actual computer game back in the day, that feels more like a management-style game like FM.

(That last part I added just to be pedantic Razz)
