What happens if you retire a team? Can you remake the team with the same name?

nope fraid you can't.

Can anyone tell me why this is the way of things?

I wanted to try a new way of doing things with a team and so TRIED to get rid of them but they only retired
and could no longer use the original name Sad

Just call your team "Whatever II"
