BB2 and influx to the BB community : thoughts
Hello all

As all of you know, Cyanide has released BB2.

My first reaction was, as I guess a lot of us here, pretty hostile.
8 teams, I could live with, but the +10k on the orc blitzer, the stadium and the bretonnian team, that was just too much to take.

Being quite vocal about BB around my friends, the question popped "so you are going to play BB2"? to which I answered a definitive no, never, it is trash, etc.

But now that I think of it, I think I was a bit severe. Don't get me wrong, I won't play it (hardly have the time to play on FUMBBL anyway, busy life those times), but it is just... I think we are not the target at all.

We know BB, we love BB, and are quite dedicated to it.
A lot of us were (or still are) tabletop players, not bothered by 100 pages rulebooks and 3-hours long games (I remember my first game of bloodbowl taking AT LEAST this time).

We already have a pretty perfect tabletop translation in FUMBBL. We don't need BB2. BB2 is targeted at beginners. And it seems to do it quite well.

I've stumbled upon a lot of players on forums that were asking some very basic advice, and I realized that they were able to do a bunch of games without even knowing the rules. Even those that did seem to be incredibly bad. But they had fun, and now they want to learn the rules.

Would they have wanted to play had they had to learn the rules beforehand? This I am not sure, but a lot of players are playing BB2 with no experience whatsoever in bloodbowl.
Those new players can be a good opportunity, because let's face it. i started playing bloodbowl when I was 13. How many 13 years-old play BB now? Maybe with BB2, a little bit more. When I was 13, I was bad. Like, really bad. And I played against other 13 boys that were even worse. But we learned together, and it was certainly more fun that way.

That said, some of them will come to FUMBBL mistakenly believing that this is a forum for Cyanide BB2. This is pretty easy to understand. They had never heard about bloodbowl, and are just getting into it.

It is obvious to us that there is a long time community behind BB, but it is not to them. So I think we should give them a hand if some stumble on our forum. They have to feel that they have found the right place. We have a lot to teach to those players, they are playing against similar new players, and find the CPU difficult to beat.

I have some time to kill at work those days, so I will try to make them aware of FUMBBL potential if I see smme new players ;)

How many of those players will remain in 1 / 2 / 5 years, I don't know. But if they stick around, they will realize FUMBBL is the real thing.

It's true that without Cyanide many of us would never have wound up here. While BB2 may not suit us and what we want out of a game, it certainly can be a great recruiting tool for those that get the bug hard.

Good blog, while cyanide game might be a pile of crap its no reason to be hostile to players there.

We just need certain people to greet new players at the front door. Yes there is a help section, but a helping hand is also important. A helping hand from a helpful person, not an old crusty jaded one, or a noob prowler.

We clearly are the target since we are more likely to buy the game than anybody else out there.

But you could probably make an argument that you don't have to make an effort with the core fan base. Much like a political party will rather focus on undecided voters interests than the interests of those core voters that have no alternative anyways.

Thanks bigbullies, I've actually turned it into a notes page entry so you can link directly to it now.

@Wreckage I think they have given up trying to make a game for us, because they clearly don't intend to make the effort needed to make a polished product that could please us. They are counting on the fact that we will eventually buy it anyway because we are fanatics. And as painful as it is to say, they may be right, I did end up buying BB1 so...

What is wrong with +10k on the orc blitzer?
What is wrong with a new roster introduced?

The real thing is the tabletop game. Plus in Cyanide's version the board is rotated in the correct way. ;) The only reason I won't buy BB2 is that I mainly use a laptop nowadays and graphics is not among its strengths.
