“Warpstone Open 2013 Qualifier XIII: Round One

This matchup was one straight from the pages of our favorite comic books. Though it was an uneven one from the start, easilyamused brought Morg 'n' Thorg, a wizard and a few babes to level the playing field.

The Marvelous Females won the coin toss and elected to receive, which would've been the preference for Watchmen Philosophy as well. With the ball taken out of our hands, we lined our tacklers up deep on defense, along with one of our two ST 5 tentacles warriors.

Early on in the match the two teams jockeyed back and forth for position, with neither one able to land a solid hit on the other. The second turn turned the tide, however, as Watchmen Philosophy managed to inflict a casualty on a key blitzer, as well as KO a second. That left Morg as the anchor of the amazon line, with Mockingbird holding the ball well out of reach deep in the Marvelous Females' half of the field.

The fourth turn saw more bad luck for the amazons, as Morg started off the turn rolling double skulls, then failing the attempt at a reroll. Watchmen Philosophy continued to advance and put pressure on the ball, but without a tackler in range Mockingbird was relatively safe. Marvelous Females did manage to dodge a catcher free from the tentacles and tacklers who had locked her in along the sideline, but a frenzied blitz from Sally Jupiter knocked out the scoring threat posed by Black Widow in short order. That same turn She-Hulk was pushed into the crowd by Rorschach and they tore her apart in celebration.

At this point there were only five players left on the pitch for the amazons and Watchmen Philosophy began their advance on the ballcarrier in earnest. Dangerous tacklers were brought into range and the threat of a blitz loomed large. Morg created some space with a blitz and got into the open as a receiver. Mockingbird saw the opening and dodged towards midfield, launching a pass that fell into Morg's waiting arms. With five members of Watchmen Philosophy waiting nearby, however, even Morg stood little chance. Sally Jupiter blitzed in a second time, inflicting a casualty on Morg that had him hobbling off to the sidelines.

With the ball in hand for the Watchmen, Marvelous Females deployed their wizard, who knocked the ball loose from Captain Metropolis' hands and knocked him out in the process. Mockingbird managed to dodge out and pick up the ball, but the odds were stacked against her. Six members of Watchmen Philosophy now lay in wait and it was again the solid defensive work of Sally Jupiter that landed the KO.

This left two amazons remaining on the pitch and put Watchmen Philosophy in an offensive mindset for the first time all match. Ozymandias gave a half-hearted attempt at a pass and Mothman failed to reel in the reception. In the final turn of the half though, Ozymandias got it right. He connected with Hollis Mason who ran the ball in for the score.

The amazons recovered fairly well for the second half, thanks in large part to their two bloodweiser babes. Even so, with only ten players on the pitch they had an uphill battle ahead of them. The half started off with a kick that sailed directly into Rorschach's waiting arms. The imposing chaos warrior tucked it under his arm and began his lumbering march up field with the rest of his crew. Turn one of the second half served to dim the hopes of the amazons: Jean Grey was badly hurt on a block from the line of scrimmage, then Mockingbird was killed by Mothman on a devastating blitz.

Watchmen Philosophy continued to slowly whittle away at the numbers, until turn eight arrived and there were only three amazons remaining on the field. Nite Owl took over the ball carrying responsibilities from Rorschach in the waning moments and walked into the endzone for the final tally.

Watchmen Philosophy 2, Marvelous Females 0.
