|Cherrystone Hotpack||#4|| |
It's never easy for a new thrower, coming into this team. A lot is expected of him and they really are big shoes to fill - although these days, Coach Stikki allows new players to bring their own footwear with them and not actually step into the dead man's boots! Onepear Peartree, Littleperson Bigappetite, Fastrecovering Housemarket... these guys were legends and more. They sat up at the very top of the Top List for most yards passed, and for a rookie thrower, that's kind of daunting.
But right from the start, Cherrystone came out firing, completing seven passes for 29 yards in only his second game. As the skills came, Cherrystone's confidence grew, and knowing he had to rack up the yards, he took to throwing nothing but long bombs. It didn't always work. There were plenty of fumbles, a fair few interceptions, and also a number of games which were lost because of his desperate throwing.
But there were some moments of pure brilliance as well, when he would rally the team, dodge into countless tackle zones to rescue a fumbled ball and throw it half the length of the pitch to a waiting catcher for the final turn victory.
But for Cherrystone, total yards passed wasn't enough. There was one record not even his former teammates had come close to, and that was the one he wanted to beat... Most passes. The legendary Fro'de, from the orc team, My 11 Thugz had set the record at 604 passes and it was a record that had stood untouched for 12 years. No one had even come close.
But once Cherrystone has secured his place among the highest passers, he began to concentrate on the number of passes he made each game. He developed the "double pass" strategy of passing to a catcher just behind the line of scrimmage, who would then run it back to hand over to him, ready for a longer pass on the following turn.
Surprisingly, this turned out to be a good tactic and not only did Cherrystone begin to overhaul Fro'de record score, but the team actually began to win more games as well. Coach Stikki was delighted and the team enjoyed many remarkable victories.
And on 29/7/2015 the record finally fell. Cherrystone threw 6 for 40 in a 4-2 victory which saw him reach the grand total of 605 passes. He was now the holder of both passing records. It had taken him just 147 games, making an average of 4.12 completions for 36.37 yards per game.
Along the way he also set the following records (NB: these are personal records, and have not yet been recognised officially)
13 completions in a single game
101 yards passing in a single game
