Lost in history there once was a vast city, Acheron, situated in what now is called the Chaos Wastes. When Chaos entered this realm the residents of Acheron were the first to scream in despair. Acheron's mages buckled under the pressures of the changing winds brought by Tzeecth. Nurgle's spread of pestilence starved even the richest farmers. Order collapsed when loyal advisors' fell to the charms of concubines and prostitutes. Seeing their mighty nation turn into a paralyzed weakling, the public turned into an uncontrollable crowd, seeking any target to shift the blame onto, hacking into the flesh of friend or foe. As the death toll rose, the dead lingered in disbelief. Some knew their time had come and departed to the afterlife. Others immediately swore service to the Dark Gods. But many, many more lingered undecided. They watched the daemons explode out of the Chaos Gate that their people had excavated. Of all shapes and sizes, they marched menacingly southwards.

The former population of the metropolis were manipulated by the daemonic energies of the Chaos Gate. Their natural desire to be brought back to life again made them desperate, and therefore vulnerable to the offers of the Dark Gods. Serve Chaos and they would get life again. So their spirit was leached into mortals, chosen by the Four Gods, and over time the spirits gained an unstable control over the host body. Some of the Acheron population that had been reborn into Dwarves wished to reclaim the glory of their former nation and so they did, but on the Bloodbowl pitch. Even though they have become demented by evil magic and their forms are slower and heavier than their former half-elf bodies, the Acheron Adamants, as they call themselves, uphold their ancient culture but with a swig of Dwarven brutality.
