FUMBBL SMACK (Pro) CCXCVI Runners Up

After an abyssmal win:loss ratio to start thier career, the Court of Appeal's coach was frustrated near to the point of retiring the whole team. Why bother coaxing along a team of aging, mostly-retired ex-Justices to a series of humiliating defeats when there were far more promising teams to lead to victory?

So the Court of Appeal lay dormant, and looked to be lost to the annals of time. High player costs, a lack of blitzers and - dare we say it - poor coaching had claimed yet another fledgling High Elf team.

Indeed, so uninterested in the Court of Appeal was senior management, the team was singled out a a guinea pig for the first entrance into a FUMBBL SMACK tournament. The rationale being that since they were all headed for the great oak bench in the sky anyway no-one would care if they were brutalised by some nasty Claw/RSC Chaos or Dirty Player laden Khemri. And, upper management would learn some valuable skills to take younger, more promising teams into the brutal SMACK tournaments.

No-one foresaw what would happen next.

Against their first opponents, the Court of Appeal played the most exciting an exhilarating edge-of-your-seat match anyone associated with the club had ever seen. It was a thing of beauty, and a the replay of which will be watched for generations if not for its technical competance - which at times is sadly lacking - but for its sheer volume of drama.

The game was forced into overtime and after an early fumble of an easy pick-up the Court of Appeal's opponents had the ball and made a bee-line for the end zone. All seemed lost as the treacherous humans stalled at the end-zone and used their numbers advantage to take apart the old Judges. With two turns to go only two remained; Mason J and Deane J, both prone and marked with tackle zones against eight Humans. The situation looked impossible. And it was.

What came next was a feat that could only be described as super-human. With no re-rolls left the two remaining judges relied on sheer force of will and determination alone. Mason got up, dodged through innumerable tackle zones and sprinted for the blitz, two dice against knocking the ball carrier down. The crowd tossed the ball back in and Deane, Seeing his chance dogded past his opponent and sprinted to collect the ball. The crowd went wild. The Humans quickly responded, blitzing Deane, but to no avail. Once, then twice he was hit with everything the Humans had, but he staunchly refused to go down. The vindictve Humans then knocked over Mason and redoubled thier efforts on Deane. Finally, after 3 2 dice blocks he could take no more and hit the turf, dropping the ball. But the Human's only remaining player - an Ogre - was simply too rattled by this astonishing feat of sportsmanship. Rattled, he mishandled the ball just yards from the end zone moments before the whistle blew.

The cacophanous roar than engulfed the crowd as the weary, battered old Judges hobbled out of the injury blocks and onto the pitch for a feverish celebration will be long remembered. Few would have realised - for the size and fervour of the celebrations - that the match had in fact been a draw.

Nuffle smiled upon the greying Justices and the cointoss put them through to the next round of the SMACK, to the astonishment of all and sundry.

They followed this up with a short 2-1 victory over their beardy dwarf opponents and this put the Court of Appeal into a finals contention in their first ever appearance at a FUMBBL tournament. The celebrations were utterly jubilant.

Management has promised that, after this performance, win lose or draw the Court of Appeal are not going anywhere; and will maintain their place on FUMBBL's ranked roster for the indefinate future!
