You can connect shapes together using Group, or Union.
Groups
First hold Shift and click each shape you want in a Group, as you can see in Fig1. Then group them by pressing CTRL + G, or selecting Object then Group as you can see in Fig2. You can also Ungroup then allowing them all to be selected individually again by pressing SHIFT + CTRL + G, or selecting Object then Ungroup.

You can still move/edit individual objects in a group by double clicking on them, once you are done double click over any blank area away from an object and then next time you click on that object it will have returned to its group.
Union
Select Each shape you want to merge in union. Then Click Path then Union. As you can see below. The shapes no longer have their own Stroke. The new shape has 1 Stroke going all the way around it.
