Is it just me or is it a real pain in the behind to upload player images.

I have tended to just:
1) search google images for appropriate pictures,
2) save them locally,
3) open them in MS Paint,
4) save them in a format which seems to involve the least KB - normally .png
5) Then spend ages trying to get them to under 30KB by playing around with the image size %... or the pixels to get them close to 95 by 147.

This whole process takes an age, and when you have a team of 11, it is very frustrating.

I like to fluff up teams, but this is a real barrier for me.

Does anyone have any advice? What works for you?

Ideally I would like to take any image, drop it into a set template which automatically resizes it for me, and then upload it to FUMBBL.

OR I would like the existing player portraits upload to FUMBBL to be more forgiving... I do understand however that Christer only has so much hard disk space, and people have the habit of taking the mickey.

Edited... 30KB not 3KB... missed 0!

I think the biggest problem is point 5. the rest is easy.

almost every image I make is 36.56 KB which makes it a nightmare to get it below 30 KB.

If Christer could increase the limit to 40 KB it would make a HUGE difference I think.

I just pray that one day this will be increased to 40 KB. Though there are probably reasons why it is so low.

Well, i have not yet uploaded pictures, but especially point 5 should be easy.

I use Irfanview for quick pipcture resizing.
Open the picture in IrfanView, press STRG+R (or Image -> Resize), make sure "Preserve aspect ratio" is checked and put "Set new size" to use pixels.

Than just change the larger side to fit the restrictions, the other side will be auto fitted and safe as -png, .jpeg or whatever. Even with 24bpp colour depth i rarely go above 20 KB picture size.

Is the problem using MS Paint? Or has it improved since 1995?

I use MS Paint and find it pretty easy Surprised

To hit 95x147 I use the help of a calculator.

There's a really easy solution, use the default portraits ;P

But if you insist on making your own portraits, I suggest you use something more advanced than MS Paint. There's nothing wrong with MS Paint, but it's a lot easier to do what you want in other image manipulating programs.

Using the Gimp makes the resizing process quite easy. It's opensource and free.

I used an internet service "funkypigeon" to send cards... it allows you to upload pretty much any sized image and it resizes it automatically for you to put on the card... Shame Fumbbl didn't have the same ability... no idea if Christer could get freeware plugin to do that?...

But yes, it's point 5 that is the pain... and I've just used MS Paint... still needs to work out if changing percentage or pixel size gets the image below 30KB... does paint.net or Gimp allow you to do this much easier within the software?, and if so, how?

+1.

I also use GIMP, my steps are literally as follows (no setup required other than downloading GIMP).

1. Find picture on net that you like and save it.
2. Open GIMP and load the picture.
3. Image -> Scale Image -> then I unchain width height (by clicking the chain), put 114 in width, 159 in height.
4. Save.

After following these steps I've never had an image over the limit in size. If it is, save as, reduce quality slider (which is shown in the saving) by a little and check. It's really simple.

Here is what I do.

I go to Yahoo or Google and search for my Pic. I keep my eye on the file size and make sure the pic is the small version. Download into my down load file, upload to server and off I go.

NOW that being said...My pics are of real life players. Thus an anbundance of pics to choose from.

2) Perfect quality and size mean nothing to me. If you can see the pic, then Iam fine.

3) Finding that perfect pic/qaulity/design/fluff and any other consideration of a picture will force you to do some design work on your end with gimp or paint. I dont have time/desire so I do not care to take the extra steps.

Bottom line. If you find a pic that is just fine as it is, fits the parameters of the site. Then just download it, reupload it and off you go. Takes 20 seconds for the process. And up to 2day for the pic admin to approve.

I would like to see a 40K limit so that PNGs with transparency are possible.

Item #5 is the problem. Getting all those pictures under 30k.

There's a bunch of websites that resize images for you. So many I don't even bother to remember one, I just google 'resize image' whenever I want to. It's quick & easy, and a lot less faffing than doing it yourself.
