It'd be fun to develop a list of coaching styles into which you could fit all or almost all coaches, and a legendary coach for the type. Like, I'd probably fall into the PurpleChest grouping. |
I think it's more robust when the group places you into a phenotype rather than trying to fit yourself into one.
There is always a fundamental gap between how we see ourselves and how others see us.
This is where having some sort of criteria to differentiate would be useful but so much of how this even got started was intuitive feels from observation.
But to your point, I would definitely put PC at the head of a phenotype. |

Er no.
The scale Mrt refers to isn't just on skill picks or "style", it's about motifs. I should know since I came up with it.
You genuinely have very little in common with PC. |

Oh, then, no. I'm not in the PC category in that sense. We just use space in similar ways. |

Who's the head of the phenotype where the game is only fun for the coach if there is a positive social experience, and s/he tends to win as long as s/he doesn't commit the one bonehead move that ruins everything? I'm thinking Azure. |

I would be interested if there is any others in the type (or with the trait) that obsessively must write a report after every match.
The types will be a sliding scale but you will definitely find a few extremes. The fast movers, the long thinkers, the block dice rerollers, the passers (usually rookies), the abusers and complainers, the jollies etc. |

Some other games classify the coaches based on the following 2 criteria:
1. What is their motivation to play the game? (What aspect of the game do they enjoy most?)
2. How do they evaluate tools (players, races, skills) in the game?
One example is Magic The Gathering. I bring this up because they polled a lot, and they put a lot of resource into their segmentation. Their answers are described here
https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/timmy-johnny-and-spike-revisited-2006-03-20
and here
https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/melvin-and-vorthos-2007-05-07-0
Short summary
1. Their motivational types are:
- Experience seeker
- Challenge seeker
- Creativity seeker
2. Their perception types are:
- Holistic view. Top to bottom. Get the big picture first, and judge the details how they fit.
- Micro view. Bottom to top. Analyse the details first, then judge the big picture based on its coherence, and architecture.
Disclaimer: A person is almost never a single type, but a mix. Also, a persons motivation can change game by game. |

Hmmm. I would like to think of myself as a fourth rate AD but I aspire to be a 4th rate grue, in reality I'm probably more of a fourth rate Baza but really dose it matter when you are 4th rate? More interesting than myself, I know what could be more interesting than me, is how many phenotypes are there? Can you name them in any other way than just listing coaches of that type? What would you call the one currently under discussion? The funotype? See what I did there? |
