Yeah! I'd heard you could climb it if you'd made a booking - but that takes all the fun out of it. A safety briefing would put your excitement to sleep before you got started! Dont need a comprehensive tour just to climb a mountain - why on earth a bridge!

As for Korea...searching for the elusive underground Hangul Tabletop Blood Bowl League is an interesting enough quest to keep occupied with.

Nelson Bay is an excellent dive spot, but there are SSOOOO many it's ridiculous. It's just north of Newcastle, which is nearly 2 hours north of Sydney. Brisbane has all the good themeparks so that could be your "kiddies" stop. And fool: i've started training for our smoke-off.....LOOK OUT!!!

Can I also add, I am next week travelling for business with probably a nights accomodation in Adelaide (Tues night) and Melb (Wed night). I think thats the 7th and 8th next month.

Be staying pretty much in the CBD of each respective place, and am happy to have a beer, pack some dice and minis etc and perhaps meet a few of you weird Mexicans.

If you have suggestions for a prospective itinery, PM me, or better still post on my Lime Kettles board

/me goes to start up a post there...

[edit] - let me know here some suggestions for my stop overs...

I live about 2 hours south of sydney, not really on the way between canberra and sydney but if you want to see a nice bit of the coast (not like dirty sydney) I can organise the gear to go snorkelling/spearfishing for a day (even scuba if you are that way inclined Wink ) and put on a BBQ after if you like.

Well fool I live about 3 hours west of Melbourne at the foot of the until recently beautiful Grampians national park, which is now quite black and not that picturesque. More than welcome to crash a couple of nights but we are bit out of the way if your heading to Sydney.

Fool,

I'd recommend driving at least from Melbourne through Sydney to Brisbane and indeed even further if you can hack the long drive. Brisbane to Cairns is probably a stretch and you might want to leave it at Brisbane and hop on a plane.

The drive is definately worth doing if you don't mind being stuck in a car for a bit. There's lots to see along the way and if you're after an 'adventurebound' style holiday, you'll have more fun in the travelling than you will trying to find things to do in the cities (especially Sydney, which is a nightmare city and really has very little to recommend it apart from it's proliferation of SWlers! Wink ).

Driving from Melbourne to Sydney is better done along the windy, picturesque, coastal highway (the Princes I believe?) rather than the dull inland one that will take you within shooting distance of Canberra (another reason to avoid this road, Canberra is a hole, best to steer clear).

I myself have driven from Melbourne to Brisbane and it's not as challenging as these ladies are making it out to be. It's about 9 hours by car from Melbourne to Sydney. I'd take my time, maybe stop on the way as Clay suggests. I can look into some things to do on the way if you like.

Whilst you're in Melbourne, I'd love to have you over for a Carlton Draught mate. You can see what all the fuss is about... Wink

Annachie's idea sounds like the go. Me, you, Miyuso, Annachie, JoeKano, and any other Melbournites we can rustle up!

Hey everybody... I just wanted to thank you all for the help. I've gotten a ton of advice and suggestions from this forum, PM's, and in the swl chat channel. It's a great feeling to know that I'll have so many friends to visit when I come over. : )

I'm still researching my trip, and trying to nail down some dates, and I'll keep you guys posted as I decide things. I'd love to get a gettogether going for SWL'ers in Melbourne, Sydney, and possibly Newcastle (so I can outsmoke DanielCollins, and outdrink Chunky at the same time).. I'm still seriously considering driving from Melbourne to Brisbane, as it doesnt seem that far as long as we stop a day here, a day there, a long the way. Beefy, skindiving/spearfishing sounds like a GREAT time... lets go find the sharks and make the front page of the newspaper (again)!

As to annachie's question:

I'm not really sure Smile As far as I can tell I know she enjoys cooking for me, cleaning up after me (laundry, housework, etc) and giving me thai massages. Not sure if she has any other interests. Razz

Actually, if any of you guys have young kids or wives we could distract her (and my 3yr old daughter) with while we're boozing and gaming it up, that'd be fantastic. She's like any other woman in the world... enjoys shopping, eating, and finding other creative ways to spend my money Razz

Anyway, thanks again for all the advice, I really appreciate it. I'm very excited about the trip and can't wait to come visit you guys. Also, I learned some good survival tips about not f*cking with wombats from the "Random Fact of the Day" thread.. if there are any other things I need to know to stay alive in Oz, please lemme know. : )

Another question for you guys:

What are your reccomendations for a good rental car. I've checked out a couple of sites, but a lot of the model/makes of cars are not ones that are familiar to me. At least I havent seen them on US roads. Budget is somewhat important, but I don't mind shelling out a bit for a bigger car if its going to be worth a few extra bucks. Any suggestions?

Alot of driving with a young kid on Aussie roads, I'd recommend a Holden Commodore or a Ford Falcon. Large, family car with good sized engines and robust to handle a few thousand km's of driving.

Avoid the Asian model cars (Hyundai, Mitsubishi etc) as they'll clap out and they aren't as roomy.

Hello guys,

Trip is coming up soon... Leaving next Tuesday for about a month in Oz/NZ. Here is a breakdown of my itenary:

Aug 8-10 : In air for one long plane flight (why didnt I leave from Thailand?!?)
Aug 10: Auckland
Aug 11-14: Based in Rotorua, checking out North Island w/Rental Car
Aug 15-16: Wellington
Aug 17-21: Melbourne, Staying at Rendevous Hotel Melbourne, 328 Flinders Street
Aug 21- 27: Sydney, Staying at Napolean & Kent Studios
Aug 27: Newcastle, Bong competition with DC
Aug 28 - 31: Driving from Newcastle to Brisbane, stops in Gold Coast cities (not sure where yet)
Sept 1 -5: Cairns, staying at Fig Tree Lodge
Sept 5: Back to California

I'd love to get a chance to meet some of the SWL guys. We talked earlier about a trip to the Lions-Swans AFL game in Sydney on Saturday August 26th. Ozjesting, any word on a deal/discount? Also, a meet-up for the Melbourne crew would be cool... August 19th was mentioned before (Elan's birthday), are you guys still game to get-together? Anyone who wants to show me around will be rewarded with copious amounts of beer. : D

My schedule is pretty free, as besides Cairns, I haven't booked any tours that are set in stone. Let me know what you guys think.

Cheers,

Fool

ok fool having just been to NZ not long ago.. can I just say for a really awesome cultural experience, especially based in Rotorua.. you have to go to a traditional Maori Hangi. We did one in Roturua.. just enquire at any tourism office.. we did one with the Mitai tribe.. was a brilliant show and dinner experience.. and highly recommended.. we even tied it in with a late night private tour of this small little zoo place called rainbow springs (comes in a nice little package) and we got to see the national bird the kiwi. Theres heaps in rotorua actually.. so if your based there should be heaps of fun.. we were in a rush and luckily only just made it south from their in a snow storm and had to wait behind a landslide.. roads were closed after that for a few days soo... hmm I think theres a place called the agrodome there.. its either there or Hamilton anyway.. got some cool things for the whole family to do there including riding in a Zorb (look it up im too lazy to provide a link).
Lets see wellington I went to the te papa museum and saw the lord of the rings exhibit there.. quite cool. Auckland do some bungy with AJ Hackets.. I did it in queenstown myself was awesome fun, or you can free fall from their big tower there .. the skytower.. probably wont be too impressive next to US buildings but the cheeky buggers made it a couple of centimetres taller than Sydney tower.. so they were the talllest down this way for a few months atleast.. I had a quite nice meal up the top there.. its a revolving restaurant and the complex it self is Auckland Casino...

Hope some of this helps mate.. have fun
