Big Beast Opener: California Golden Lizards (3-0-1) vs. Hawaii University (3-0-1)

The first Big Beast conference game, as well as the first overall conference game played, was a matchup between two very different teams. The flyin Hawaiians, with their spread offense and dodgy mentality, were facing a ball-control and bashy-oriented Cal team. The Lizards had several massive players, with many of them capable of hurting the opposition, so both sides knew that casualties were a key to this game. But Hawaii had enough speed and dodging ability to hopefully avoid Cal as much as possible, so their goal was to capitalize on opportunities to either score or steal the ball. The only similarity between the two teams, outside of identical records and playing in the same conference, would be the losses to a common foe: the Oregon Waterfoul. Cal played them in the opener, but got thoroughly outplayed and lost 2-3. Hawaii played much better, forcing a defensive struggle that took some epic moves by Oregon to steal a 1-0 win. The odds makers were fairly indecisive about the game, saying it was pretty even, despite the nay-sayers that believed the elves should win easy. But neither team would find victory, or even the endzone, very easily on this day...

Cal was coming in with a far more skilled team (having been around a year longer,) and thus they were giving up two handicaps to Hawaii, which turned out to be 'Doom and Gloom' and bribe the ref 2. Fortunately for the lizards, both of their Ag4 skinks were able to shrug off their injuries and make it to the match. Cal was kicking off and it looked like Hawaii was going to massive-gang foul their kroxigor (with 9 people,) but their catcher double failed a pickup. It was a sign of things to come, as Hawaii moved into scoring position but failed passes on two straight turns. Cal surrounded the ball as best they could, but the ball was picked up and looked to be safely out of harms way. But yet another case of double 1s struck, leaving the ball carrier open, and Cal was only too happy to free him of it, then have the ball scatter to the very saurri that hit him. This is when things turned from bad to worse for Hawaii, as their kick/guard lino was killed (no Apo b/c he had a nig already,) whilst the massive saurri started to rumble downfield over the next couple of turns. The elves did what they could to try and get close to the ball, but their other guard player was BH in the process. It took every singe turn for the Saurri to get into scoring position, but going all the way from the two-yard line to the opposite endzone must have tired the large lizard out, because he double-failed the GFI and thus ended the half. It was a fitting end, as Hawaii had numerous ones that cost them several scoring chances (and players as a result,) but the (un)timely ones by Cal left things at double zeros on the scoreboard, the only place where numbers really count.

The second half began with Cal receiving, and Hawaii on their heels. Things started out poorly for them (again) as a rabid Lizard fan threw a rock and BH one of their LoS guys. Cal started to move the ball forward and killed another Hawaii player, though the team doctor was able to save him. The ball started to stall around mid-field, but more Hawaii players came off the field as a third player (and other guard player,) was killed, and a few more BH. But the Lizards did a poor job of protecting the ball from backside pursuit, leading to a cluster-duck on the sidelines. Eventually a Hawaii catcher was surfed, scattering the ball out-of-bounds, where the fans threw it to midfield. Both teams made frantic efforts to try and secure it, and Cal got their first, only to lose it. Hawaii picked it up and looked to have enough players nearby to possibly score and steal this game despite the nuffling, but Cal had a saurus break free and knock the ball loose from a blodger (with no tackle.) Their attempt to slip an Ag4 skink through and grab the ball failed, leaving the door open for an epic T16 win for Hawaii. But, fittingly, the lino they sent towards the endzone got double 1s on his gfi, ending the game as a scoreless draw.

Final Score- Cal 0 : 0 Hawaii

Hawaii got completely nuffled in this game, getting numerous double ones throughout the first half and at the end of the second. They could have easily scored in either case, but things just weren't meant to be. Cal should have been able to take advantage and win this game, but untimely 1s on the final turn of the first half cost them a score, and bad protection in the second cost them a chance to pull away. Sadly Hawaii lost two of their guard players to deaths, which is really going to hurt the team's chances in the Beast. Had Cal not gotten so many POWs this game (without tackle,) the results could have been different. Had the dice been 'fair' in any sense, Hawaii would have won. Had the dice been this way and Cal protected the ball any better at all, Cal would have likely won. But bloodbowl, and specifically nuffle, can be very cruel.

GG to Apo, who took this in stride despite everything that went against them. Lame winnings on both sides will prevent Hawaii from attempting to replace their lost linos, which won't make the rest of conference play any easier. Best of luck to you sir.

Coach McClean had some words to say after the game against the big ugly Gogres.
"Well team, we played well and had a rough outing but the win will make the loss of Roneth and James alittle less sour. Roneth was a leader on and off the field and everyone that knew him knew he was a competitor. Rest in Peace Roneth & James. With that we have two new freshman coming into the folds and I expect the rest of the team to get them up to speed quickly as there is no let off with our next match against the Missou Tigers who are hungry for a victory after their defeat against PainState. Please welcome Billy Madison our new lino who says he likes being on the LOS. And Jonathon 'Mox' Moxon who can't hit a can off the top of someones head, but atleast he gets it in the vacinity of his target. "

Golden Gate vs. D.D. Tech

San Francisco - In what must have one of the most anticipated games of this AKC season, yesterday, under the sweltering rays of the Texas sun, Golden Gate faced off with its rival, D.D. Tech.

A lot was at stake this game, as both teams much needed the points. Golden Gate to stay competitive for the end of season cup bids and D.D. Tech, which has had a rather abysmal season so far, needed the points to bring an end to a losing streak.

On top of that, with both teams, being low on fit players, the threat of injuries affecting their next games was something both coaches were concerned about, especially since the rivalry that had been heating up since last season’s Wonderbra Bowl promised to result in a very physical game.

Golden Gate started receiving and gradually worked its way through the ranks of the Dark Elf team towards the end zone. However, the team’s new catcher, Peter O’Stool, who replaced Robert Pitch-em, fumbled the crucial scoring pass, throwing the ball into the crowd, that promptly threw the ball back near the Line of Scrimmage, where both teams spent quiet some time duking it out in order to get control of the pigskin. Eventually, it was the Texas team who came in top and scored the first touchdown of the game.

Disappointed in their failed offensive, the Warriors quickly launched a new assault near the end of the first half and even though the women of D.D. Tech were staging a good defensive formation, they didn’t seem to be able to stop the Nuffle-aided touchdown the Golden Gate Warriors scored at the very end of the first half.

So far the physical game both coaches had predicted hadn’t surfaced yet, but the second half of the game proved to bring some change to that. On their offensive drive, D.D. Tech quickly made a casualty at the kick-off and didn’t hesitate to use the occasional boot or elbow on some of Golden Gate’s prone players. Golden Gate’s defense wasn’t that easy overcome, however and after a particularly vicious contact, one of the dames had to be patched up by her team’s physician. Later on the very same physician stated that if not for his timely intervention, the injury might have been an early career ender for the college player. Further pressure by the defense could not prevent a second touchdown for the D.D. team. Also, while both teams still suffered a lesser casualty, it was heat exhaustion, alternating between both teams that proved to keep the game interesting and the outcome uncertain. During the very last moments of the game, several of the Tech Ladies were suffering from dehydration effects and this made it possible for the Warriors to score again, right before the ref signaled the end of the game. Final score of an exciting game: 2-2.

No doubt, the rivalry between the two teams will continue to smolder till next time both teams face each other on the fields of Nuffle again and even though none of the two teams walked away being a clear winner this time, none of them were too disappointed with the outcome of the game and, clearly the winner this time was College Blood Bowl.

PRESS CONFERENCE - Pain State 2 vs. Nibraskah 0

In what may end the first official NCBB Rivalry for Pain State, the game with Nibraskah saw a one-sided matchup between the struggling skaven, and the Nuffle-favored greenskins. For the 2nd straight game, the orcs saw their agile opponents dropping balls and failing dodges, and their own blocks breaking armor and sending opponents off the pitch!

In the Presser, orc coach, Tod Da Odd, had the following to say "Clearly, da orc gods Gork an' Mork were both in attendance dis even' er...night time. We keep crumpin' da dodgey gitz sos that dem udder guyz cant, and den we pound dem whilez wun of da boyz getz da ball and scorez a TURCHDEN! Waaagh!"

It was rumored afterwards that the Skaven of Nibraskah may disband at the end of the season in order to better focus on academics. I for one hope that this does not happen, as the skaven still look competitive albeit banged up and missing a few key positionals. Don't Do It, SLeepyweasel!!!

CBBS Week 7 Update

Well folks, it's been a while since we reviewed what's gone down in the NCBB....three weeks to be exact. We apologize for this and promise to do a fairly decent job in this post to semi-make up for it. Much has happened since our last post, which marked the beginning of conference play. The much anticipated "Battle of the Beast" has certainly been interesting so far, though perhaps not as balanced as we once thought. PainState has marched right through it so far, crushing Mizzou, Nibraskah, and Cal by a combined score of 6-1. Meanwhile, the AKC has been (as predicted,) dominated by Oregon thus far, while UCon has seemingly had championship-hangover. The Smack 6 has seen Clemson rise from the ashes of a horrid start to conference leader, with Texas Tech right behind them. Later on in this issue, we'll look up some team and individual stats, along with current bowl projections. We might even throw in some title game discussion, because it's what the people want!

Big Beast
-Clearly the best conference during O.o.C. play, the five-way battle-royal between the teams of the Beast was supposed to be an epic clash where all five decimated each other until none of them could stand. But that hasn't happened so far, as PainState has gone 3-0, beating the #2, #3, and #5 ranked teams in the conference. With an overall record of 6-1-0, coach TodFa is in great position to take his senior-laden team back to the title game (where they lost in season 6.) The only remaining obstacles are games against Hawaii (#3, 4-2-1,) and Minni (#6, 0-2-5.) Neither game will be easy, as Hawaii is fierce on defense and still has hopes of a title-game rematch with Oregon (whom they barely lost 0-1 to in O.o.C play,) as well as Minni potentially bringing seven massive Gogres to the game (as well as a few handis.) With that being said, however, nothing is guaranteed. Mizzou currently has the same amount of BCS points as Pain (19) with one game left to go (rivalry game vs Cal.) If Pain manages to trip up and not win + tie (or double win,) then Mizzou can steal the conference away despite the head-2-head loss. Likewise, Nibraskah is lurking with 15 points (5-0-2,) and two games to go (vs Cal and Hawaii,) and could also theoretically win the conference if the two teams above them stumble. Hawaii is right behind them with 14 points (4-2-1,) with games against Pain and Nibraskah. Although the odds are slim, it is still quite possible for them to win the conference if enough things happen. Behind all four of them sits Cal with 13 points (4-1-2) and two games left against Nibraskah and Mizzou, could create a three-way tie for the conference title with Mizzou and Pain (all three can theoretically finish at 19 points,) though head-2-head wins over both Cal and Mizzou would give Pain the title. Conference championships mean little, but they are pretty cool to boast about to fans and potential recruits. What is important is that a team from the Beast finishes with as few losses as possible, as PainState (6-1-0,) Mizzou (5-1-1,) Nibraskah (5-0-2,) and Hawaii (4-2-1,) all still have title-game aspirations.

AKC
-Oregon's gone 3-0 in conference play after going 4-0 during O.oC. play, so it's no surprise to see they're #1 in the RFA and likely getting into the BCS title game. They have two games left; the first being against a dangerous Golden Gate team (4-1-2,) and the second being against the no-show Torxas team. So barring a 3-2 shootout upset, a miraculous defensive performance, or another horrible game of dice, Golden Gate just doesn't look like it has the defensive capabilities to stay with Oregon for 16 turns. Stranger things have happened, but it's likely that Coach K will have his team focused on the task at hand and come out with a win. Add a forfeit win vs Torxas in the final week, and Oregon would be a lock (and likely heavy favorite) in the BCS National Championship, a place they've missed out on the past two seasons (settling for Rose Bowl wins,) after winning it all in season 5. The Season 7 champions, UCon, has really struggled to live up to expectations this year. Perhaps best fit for an 'under-wolf' role, the Huskies were upset by PainState in week 1 of the season, before seemingly turning things around with three straight wins. But a shocker of an upset to Navy in week 5, and then a tough 0-1 loss to Oregon the week after, really sunk the Huskies' season. Golden Gate sits at 4-1-2 and controls their bowl fate in their own hands; with back-2-back games against Oregon and UCon to close the season, GG could potentially play in a game like the Orange bowl, or drop to something like the Killer Lite bowl.

Smack 6
-As predicated, Clemson has risen from the dead (pun intended,) to revive their season and potentially win the conference away from the rats and euros. After struggling through the toughest O.o.C schedule in the league (going 1-1-2,) the Terrors have ripped off four straight wins to put them in great position for a top-tier bowl game. But Nomad has a higher goal: to somehow reach the BCS title game and crush the wanna-be Oregon team that threatens to surpass the legacy of his old school from the beginning days of the NCBB. Although unlikely to happen, there is a scenario in which it could potentially happen...and we'll describe it later on in the article. For now, Clemson will have to start with winning their conference, which will ultimately be decided in week 9 against Texas Tech, currently the second place team in the Smack 6. The Rat Raiders sit at 4-2-1, so theoretically they have a shot at the title game as well. With two games left (vs ND then Clemson,) the Rats have certainly been under-the-radar so far this season. But everything will be decided in week 9 between these two teams, so we can't wait to enjoy the show.

Title Discussion
-Right now Oregon has just one game left before locking up a spot in the title game, and the oddsmakers believe they'll get it done vs Golden Gate despite the numerous injuries they've suffered (whether from games or aging.) That leaves the next piece of the puzzle up to the beast, where Pain and Hawaii face off in a crucial game this week. If pain wins, they just might be in the title game no matter what happens vs Minni in the final week. But if they lose, it opens up the door for Hawaii, as well as numerous other teams. If that happened, then the Clemson vs Texas Tech game went from a de-facto Smack 6 Championship game to a possible BCS Title play-in game. Let's look at a few scenarios:

1. Oregon (9-0-0) vs Pain (8-1-0 or 7-2-0): if both teams win out, this is a lock.
2. Oregon (8-1-0 or 8-0-1) vs Pain (8-1-0 or 7-2-0): even a tie/loss to GG can't keep Oregon out
3. Oregon (undef, 1 tie, or 1 loss,) vs Pain (7-1-1): a loss to either Minni or Hawaii (but a win vs the other,) isn't enough to drop Pain below other teams
4. Oregon (any above record) vs Mizzou (7-1-1): Tigers win out and Pain finishes (6-1-2) and gets jumped despite head-2-head win
5. Oregon (any record) vs Pain (6-1-2): Pain stumbles but enough other teams (Mizzou, Hawaii, Clemson, TT,) lose/tie to not jump them
6. Oregon (AR) vs Hawaii (6-2-1): Hawaii beats Pain, wins out and jumps Pain (7-1-1, 6-2-1, or 6-1-2)
7. Oregon (AR) vs Nibraskah (7-0-2): Hawaii beats Pain, Nib beats Cal and Hawaii, Pain gets jumped by Nib despite H2H win (finishes 7-1-1, 6-2-1, or 6-1-2)
8. Oregon (AR) vs Nibraskah (6-1-2): aforementioned scenario but Pain jumped despite better/same record + H2H win b/c Pain falling in polls while Nib rising
9. Oregon (AR) vs Cal (6-1-2): Hawaii beats Pain, Cal beats Nib, Cal beats Mizzou (finishes 6-1-2,) Minni beats Pain (finishes 6-1-2,) Nib beats Hawaii (finish 6-1-2 and 5-2-2, respectively,) Cal jumps Nib+Mizzou via H2H win and Pain despite H2H loss b/c lizards rise in poll while Pain falls due to back-2-back losses.
10. Oregon (AR) vs Clemson (6-1-2): the aforementioned scenario occurs but Clemson jumps Cal due to current higher ranking (also they beat TT)
11. Oregon (AR) vs Texas Tech (6-2-1): TT beats ND+Clemson, THEN scenario 9 occurs and TT gets in over Cal (finishes 6-1-2,) OR scenario 8 occurs and TT gets in over Nib (finishes 6-1-2,) OR scenario 5 occurs and TT gets in over Pain (finishes 6-1-2,) OR scenario 6 occurs and TT jumps Hawaii (finishes 6-2-1, gets jumped despite W over Pain while TT tied Pain)
12. Texas Tech (6-2-1) vs Pain (8-1-0): TT wins out, Oregon losses to GG (finishes 8-0-1,) Pain wins out, and TT gets in b/c rising in polls while Oregon falling, despite having worse record

Those are just about all of the scenarios I can see happening, even if some of them are highly unlikely. I suppose a few more can be made, but you'd need to play major if games with the polls putting one team above another despite a better record (say, Clemson finishing 6-1-2 and jumping Pain who finishes 7-1-1.) Actually the more I look at that, the more I think it's possible, depending on if Pain lost in their last game (to Minni) so they'd be falling and not have a chance to rise before the bowls (say if they lost to Hawaii but beat Minni,) AND voters saw that Clemson beat TT while Pain failed to way back when. I even tried to make a scenario where Golden Gate got into the title game, but seeing as Oregon would still have a better record than them (despite H2H loss,) I just didn't see it happening. Unless both teams got into the title game....but we're getting ahead of ourselves now.

I hope you enjoyed this CBBS report, as it was long overdo! Best of luck to everyone with the rest of their season, and here's hoping to another great bowl week! We'll be back likely after this round to discuss the title scenarios going into the final week, as well as bowl possibilities. If not, we'll announce all the bowl games and then preview as many of them as possible when the time comes.
