Hello boys and girls.
I am going to play a few games with Dwarfs(yuck).
I have had a look at five successful teams and they all end up with one runner, although two of them started with two.
Bearing in mind that I have a terrible record with Dwarfs, how many Runners would you start with if you were me?

Two. They are the squishiest of all dorfs, and every dorf death makes the bells ring that feed starving children... so uh... basically kill more dorfs.

Get two. And don't give them access to the team's guards or the team doctor.

In the old days I used to start without runners, I just took 9 blockers, 2 blitzers and an apothecary.

In the age of journeydwarfs, I'd probably start with 1 runner.

1 runner for me is, because if he gets hit your team has already failed.

Yes Stonetroll, you were one of the good players I looked at Smile.
I think if I was confident of my abilities I would start with one.
Do you think starting with 2 is better for a noob?
I also thought that starting with 2 I could skill them both up quick to try for +stat and then sack the other.

I start with 2 because of their speed more than anything. Then I hope for stat boosts.

I'd say two, too. Some reasons (that have been stated or not):

- They are fragile. Playing the next match with one runner instead of two doesn't hurt much, especially with the good journeymen. Playing without a single runner is unpleasant, especially on offense and/or against fast teams.

- Better chances to get a ball carrier with blodge/stat increases.

- Speed and mobility. Especially needed on defense and again especially against fast teams. Since you lack Guard in the beginning, a runner being able to lend an assist almost anywhere where needed on defense (while another one can still hang back) is highly valuable. Having four instead of only three AG 3 players helps a lot when things don't go exactly your way.

- Specialist option. Once you have a dedicated ball carrier, you can develop the second into a sacker, a thrower, a dirty player or even a dull leader. And you always have him as backup, too. (I like to have a runner with Wrestle. Don't know why others don't do that - I find it very useful.)

- No good alternatives. The runner costs only 10k more than a longbeard, so leaving him out offers nothing, not even if you start with 2 RRs instead of 3 (which I highly prefer, especially on a team with so many weaknesses). Only if you drop a slayer, too (not too much of a bad idea in my opinion), you get enough money (80k) to buy another blocker - but you don't really need a 12-men squad to start with (even though it's never bad). And even then you wouldn't have to pass on a second runner to get that bench. This obviously only takes into account the very first games. You can always start with less positionals, but it tends to give you a disadvantage.

1. Only one player can carry the ball.

1 Slayer too.

Two - additional sure hands in case the ball gets loose (either on offense or defense), additional ag 3 and move 6 for additional mobility

2! For me, Dwarves need all the speed they can get. I also like 2 slayers and 2 blitzers for this reason. Additionally, 2 slayers to defend both sidelines.
I am also interested in whether to get a death roller... kinda toying with idea but seems kinda expensive...

I also like to get a reserve dwarf once I have the cash. I know reserves are not popular, but for me its about giving up a small TV advantage in most games for some insurance against bad injury rolls that will occassionally make a game impossible to win. Dwarves dont really do well short of players which is probably why PC suggests minimising AV 8.

I always start with 2 Runners..just can't see giving up the speed (such as it is) and agility on a team that lacks much of either. But then, it's always been pretty easy to start with 2 blitzers, 2 slayers, 2 runners and 5 longb...err blockers.

I like the death roller, but it is just not worth the 160TV hit.

@PC it seems you favor AV 9 over higher MA with your 1 runner / slayer approach. If you skilled up a runner or slayer with a stat increase of MA or AV, which would you choose?
